When The Levee BreaksOriginally released in 1971 and with sales of over 37 million, it is hard to imagine anyone hasn’t already heard Led Zeppelin’s fourth and finest album (actually untitled but widely known as Led Zeppelin IV). There are only eight tracks and Zeppelin never put out singles but at least half of these songs play such a fundamental part in the soundtrack of our times that they would be immediately identifiable by most listeners from just a few bars. Has there ever been a greater opening phrase in rock history than Robert Plant’s wail over the hum of warmed up amps on Black Dog? “Hey, hey mama, said the way you move / Gonna make you sweat, gonna make you groove.” It is a threat and a promise that the album resolutely keeps. The four symbols on the label and inside sleeve of Led Zeppelin IV, represent (from left to right) Jimmy Page, John Paul Jones, John Bonham and Robert Plant. ... The idea for each member of the band to choose a personal emblem for the cover was Page'sZoso is not a word but rather, a symbol. The original symbol was used by Cardano in 1557, which he used as the magickal sigil for saturn, the planet that rules capricorn, Jimmy Page's Sign. Jimmy took this sybol and changed parts of it. The true meaning is one only known to him but Saturn represents Satan.Tolkien. They included references to LOTR in other songs, mainly in “Ramble On,” “The Battle of Evermore,” and “Misty Mountain Hop.” ... The lyrics to “Stairway to Heaven,” once interpreted verse by verse through the lense of LOTR, could tell another story-and one worth reading even if you think the theory is hogwash.8) Four SticksLed by an incessant Page riff and powered by Bonham's literal use of four drumsticks - hence the title, this was a difficult track to record which required many more takes than usual. The complex arrangement led it to being played live on only a couple of occasions.7) Going To CaliforniaThe Led Zeppelin III album had showcased their acoustic side and this was another foray into fey acoustic territory. The hippy dippy flower kid lyrics may sound a little trite now, but back in the early 70s the singer songwriter soft rock style of the likes of Joni Mitchell was a big influence on Robert Plant.Finished on 12/12/19.
