Excellent video. I came here because my own bronze corys have just spawned (not planned on my part) and I want to rescue the eggs from my guppies and try to raise some fry.
Just adding my sixpence worth, I'm not sure what size tank you have but adding half a cap-full of methylene blue is a massive amount . Normal dosing rate would just put a slight blue tinge into the water
andy stokes Thanks!! Yeah noobie mistake but that's why I recommend the catappa leaves instead. It's just easier to drop a leaf in and have it stain nothing, give off the tannins which provide the same effect and provide some minimal amount of food. It was in a 10 gallon.
I just add an almond leaf and keep the tank dim. You don't need methalyne blue.

What happens is that the female will take "fluid" from the male into her mouth and then deposit the "fluid" on the eggs to fertilize them.
Good advice on using methylene blue. We used it at the tropical fish hatchery I used to work at years ago.
One thing is for certain, nature follows its own rules. Years ago I had 3 peppered corys in a 20 gallon which became overrun by the Rotala Indica plants I had, so I trimmed the plants up and put the cuttings in a outdoor pond container I had during the late summer to see if they'd grow outside .
I had pretty much forgotten about them until one day in Autumn the weather turned nasty so I decided to empty the pond for the winter which is when I had a surprise.
Apparently the catfish had attached their eggs to the plants which hatched in the pond where the water had become extremely cold .I measured the temp as being 42F°.
Given the cold temp I thought I was seeing really small tadpoles until I noticed how they were swimming. All in all I collected 20 peppered Corys and transferred them to a small tank in the house, very slowly got them used to the warmer temperature and waited to see if they survived, which they did. I've heard that they'll do alright with temps as low as 56° but not in the low forties and especially not for delicate baby fish or so I thought. I posted this situation on a few fish forums to see if anyone else had knowledge of this but ended up getting a bit of flack from some if the members telling me I was full of it, and that this was impossible etc etc. The criticism didn't seem to bother the fishes though and went onto grow up and be super healthy .. LoL 😅
Recently I transferred 3 Bronze corys from an older established 20 gallon tank to a 55 I had set up a couple of months ago and had got another surprise. Within a few hours after being transferred to the bigger tank , they bred . Now I have eggs all over the place and definitely all over the glass. I stopped counting at 70 !🤦
I can only assume that the newer water along with the nicer environment with much more room than they had previously ,triggered them to spawn. Bottom line is that although sticking within the general parameters is suggested and good advice, they'll tend to follow their own rules

Thank you for this. I have Panda Cords and I have stumbled onto 2 fry. So at least I know they are hatching. Now to just find where they are laying the eggs. I actually got to watch them breed one night, never found the eggs though.
mharrii Congrats on the babies and thank you for your comment. I hope you have great success raising them. When they're small they can get sucked into the filter if you have a hang on back filter so cover the intake with a sponge filter.

A tip I was given by a cory breeder is if you have a species only tank put clear marbles in the tank and the cory cats will prefer to lay their eggs on them.
GreyHairBear Wow never heard of that trick. If I had Bronze Cories only, I would love to try it.
Hello! thanks for this great info! My Corydoras spawned about 3 weeks ago and I've ended up with around 100 fry so far, they keep spawning every few days! I have two of each Corydoras, bronze albino and Venezuelans... I think the bronze and the albino have mated... I know the albino is from the bronze strain but was wondering what the Cory fry would turn out to be? From what I've read could be bronze ,albino or peppered.. they are doing really well.. wasn't trying for fry but it's lovely watching them grow 🐟🐟🐟🤗
One of the best videos I have seen on breeding Corydoras.
In my experience most fish eggs won't pop if you are gentle and not trying to pop them.
I do not normally focus on egg laying fish but when ever I collect eggs I use my Hands. I have used hand removal of the eggs on Corys, Florida Flag fish and other killifish without ever popping a egg or causing damage to the fry inside.
I wouldn't do a HOB unless you had a thick sponge on the intake ... Small sponge filter on low setting and plants for cover is all you need. If you add plants like java moss the fry will feed off it after their egg sacs are used up. There is infusoria on your aqaurium plants. Keep the lighting dim and when you need to do a water change use an airstone on the end in the tank so you dont suck up fry.
Thanks for the video. I am trying to spawn green cory cat eggs. I put the eggs ina Marin breeder basket that is submerged in the original tank. I put catappa leaves in the basket to hopefully reduce the chance of fungus forming.

good advise with using your hand because i tried the ccard and they just floated away . They werent viable ,unfortunately .
About 10 years ago I found eggs in my 25 gallon. I put all adult fish(Bronze Cories and Lemon Tetras)in another tank. About 60-80 Bronze Cories hatched. Only 5 or 6 died during the time I had them. When they were 3 months old, I gave them to a local fish store(they wouldn't give me store credit)because I didn't have enough tank space for them. Wish I could have bought a 75 or 90 gallon tank and kept them all.
Hey I don't want to take my eggs out of the tank if I have Corey set up in a tank by theirselves will they eat the eggs or the babies and will the eggs hatch

Interesting video, thanks...Just wondering though, I would have thought you could just use a few large livebearer mesh traps to put the eggs into, that way you can keep the eggs in the same tank as the adults then without having to make a seperate tank up?...Not sure if it's possible but just a thought!
That's what I'm doing right now. I happened to have one on hand from years ago. I wasn't trying to breed my cories but they laid eggs anyway, I think after a water change. Once before they laid eggs and I did nothing, thinking they were rasbora eggs. Those eggs "disappeared". But these latest eggs I gathered up using a credit card but I think a finger would work just as well. Thinking like you that I'd just make use of the existing tank, I pulled out the old mesh trap and plopped the eggs in. A couple of weeks later I now have 6 fry swimming around. They are about 3/16" long. I'm not sure if I'm going to move them to a fry tank or just wait until they get big enough for the main tank. I worry that new tank water might not be up to snuff.
What if your ph is on the low side do you still use catappa leaves?
I currently have 40 ish fry from my albino corycats. It’s exciting and nerve racking trying care for them they are just so stinking tiny. I’ve only had guppy fry this far as new fish keeper. This spawn was a surprise
Remember, dont over think things. They are not as fragile as they appear. Just keep the water clean and feed them a couple times a day. Dont use a hang on back filter

My male panda cory catfish and female salt and pepper cory catfish laid eggs there was only the 2 so I know they bred but unsure of how to go about hatching them I moved them into a fry tank but its bare and theyve been in there 3 days now theyre still nice looking and no fungus wonder if they will hatch
If the tank is heated it should be very soon! If not it might take longer, up to 5 days I'd estimate.
@@PRJsince1990 its been 4 now and they are all brownish coloured with one that I can see a black dot on!!! Not sure if thats good or not all 4 are stuck together still currently I think when I am done work I am going to split them up carefully or should i leave them!?!

Yes but very carefully. Good idea is to use a Turkey baster for pinpoint cleaning. You can also try to move most of the poop to one side of the tank using a baster and collecting it when it settles.

I have sterbai cory in my community tank. Which temp is 24-26. It's quite difficult to remove the egg. What is the best time to remove the egg? Once we see it or wait for a week?

You used way too much methylne blue, you only need about 3 drops per 10 gallons. Yes there will be some mild discoloration of the silicon and maybe issues with sensitive live plants, but at the smaller dose I had good results with little to no fungus on the eggs and my live plants did just fine.
Yeah I really overdid it, but never having dosed it before I had no idea what it would do! Lol glad to hear that your experience went smoothly!

the fry technically IS the yolk... what they would be consuming would the the remainder of the 'egg white's, or sac...

Megan Lynn Yes and currently running both a sponge and HOB filter for extra filtration. I did not cover it in the video because I assume if you are at the level of interest of breeding, you probably have a cycled tank lol
PRJ since1990 I'm a beginner I'm just a very curious beginner so I tend to go on a learning binge, lol. Did you establish a bacteria colony by keeping the filters in your other tank first? What's the ammonia source for the bacteria to eat before you put the fry in? My guess would be you used old tank water too and it's just ready to go? Sorry for being a noob lol.
Megan Lynn No worries! I am by no means an expert. I used some media from the main tank to help jump start the cycle. No need to use old tank water... It's full of nitrates which are the end part of the nitrogen cycle.

I used my finger and it broke them all the only one I got off was eaten by a guppy that jumped into the breeder box as I was moving them the top of the box is out of the water so it must of somehow jumped in
Did you wait several hours or even a day after they laid them? Eggs are very fragile when they are first laid so I'd advise to try again and give it time. My guppies eat mine too lol
@@PRJsince1990 yea I waited a day because I didnt have a hatchery because I wasnt expecting eggs and during that day one group of eggs were eaten which was about 12
I just got 10 for a steal! The pet store employee thought they were panda corys. So I got them for 80cent cheaper per fish.

Thanks! I wouldn't use hydrogen peroxide with such young fish, and you would only use that to kill off certain types of algae. The tannins from Indian almond leaves will destroy most harmful bacteria and fungus.
