70s were great for music and TV like Barney Miller and Columbo, then plummeted in the 80s with the corporate dreck that epitomized the Reagan era. Luckily, music and TV rebounded in the 90s (the latter mostly due to HBO, Showtime, etc). And now in the 2010s and 2020s there are great pockets of TV brilliance (amid the abundant garbage, admittedly).

Same here. Great first run shows. Great 50s and 60s shows in syndication. I miss how people still had a sense of humor and understood that jokes were just that: jokes. Even if they were in poor taste. People understood that one's person beliefs didn't give one an excuse not to do one's job because someone asked them to do something that offended them. The only bad thing about the mid to late 70s was the music. Disco sucked then and still does.

My favorite was Steve Landesberg as Dietrich. He was so funny and so deadpan. I had no idea he was a comic. I do remember he was in "Forgetting Sarah Marshall" which also starred Jason Segel. Landesberg played Segel's therapist and he was not in the film long but he was very funny. I loved it when Dietrich trolled Harris. You could tell Dietrich loved doing it too. Some of the best scenes of the show had those two fighting or sharing deadpan quips with each other. I loved the storyline right after Landesberg joined the cast when Harris moved into Dietrich's apartment (not by choice ) and they clashed greatly and it was SO funny how he got under Harris' skin. Ron Glass and Steve Landesberg played so well off each other. I wonder in real life if they were friends. Actually Ron Glass was so great on this show but he was so undervalued in many ways because other actors like Abe Vigoda, Jack Soo and Steve Landesberg got most of the attention. Harris and Wojo (played wonderfully by fellow Michigander Max Gail) had the most growth in the series. Besides Hal Linden (who was the only cast member to be on every episode of the show), Glass and Gail were the only two supporting cast members to be on all the seasons.
Neither of them were even nominated for their performances, which is a real shame.

I remember watching an interview with Hal Linden--years after the show went off the air--and he said the main reason Barney Miller ended was they simply began to run out of ideas of for scripts. Jack Soo also was praised for his role in the 1961 musical movie "Flower Drum Song" which was based on a Broadway play by the same name. It was his first movie role. "Flower Drum Song" was also noted to be about Orientals living in America and almost all the cast members were either Chinese or Japanese, a rarity for that time. Most Oriental roles in movies were played by Caucasian actors who were made up to appear Oriental. The only exception was Juanita Hall who was a well known black singer on Broadway and had appeared in "South Pacific" as a Pacific Islander. She was a replacement in the part however. Originally the part was to be played by Anna Mae Wong who sadly passed away shortly before filming was to start.
