  • Hey Everyone and Welcome to What Did I Miss, where today I will be sharing some good news and some bad for Star Trek fans, after Paramount revealed the fate of both Strange New Worlds and Lower Decks. It is crazy to think that just two years ago, there were five new series being produced by Paramount for the franchise, with the studio also teasing a new movie with a release date. Flash forward two years and fans have yet to see any new films from the studio and now only one of those five series will be producing content after this year. So I am going to go over this news but also take a look at the state of the franchise and decide if maybe Star Trek’s best days are behind them.

Shows have made it standard to expect "Movie Quality" episodes.

@@geekinitwithjimclassic8240 Or that they're simply prioritizing other projects or cutting down on producing original content in general. Or that some executive takes personal issue with the content of the show or the people making it. Or that someone was going to leave the project and they weighed replacing them against canceling the show and decided on the latter.
It should be also noted that the success of cartoons is often measured in large part by merch sales. A cartoon that sells a lot of toys and T-shirts (or is expected to) is likely to be prioritized over one that doesn't. I don't know how well Lower Decks is doing on that front, but it might be a factor.
Another thing to note is that there are rumors of Viacom putting Paramount up for sale and/or Paramount+ potentially merging with another streamer. If true, that seems to suggest it's a time of change, and during times of change, all sorts of seemingly odd decisions are made. There could for one thing be rights issues arising if Paramount separates from CBS, or if Viacom sells Star Trek off separately (or separates it with the intent *not* to sell it). Ending shows could be a move to make things less complicated ahead of reshuffling or selling things.

The recent cancellations of the current ST shows is a possible indicator that they've finally realized that anything related to JJ Abrams and/or Alex Kurtzmann has been a monumental hot mess from the beginning and that they might be finally positioning themselves to clean house and start over with better foundations. I'd love to see all the current shows come to an end, let the franchise cool off completely for a few years, then have an entirely new crop of showrunners brought in who actually care about the franchise and get back to creating ST worth watching again.

Yes! For starters, they should ask, "do you think Star Trek is STUPID? Yes? Then we don't want you on the project." If the show-runner gets past that, the next question should be, "do you think Star Fleet should be portrayed as a bunch of Nazi Pigs in Space?" That would eliminate people like those responsible for Lower Decks, Discovery, and Section 31.

And no one now gets how revolutionary having Uhura on the bridge every week was! They would constantly get letters from the 60s version of anti-woke people writing “I love your show, if it weren’t for that woman!” Uhura changed America as we knew it, getting male and female African-Americans into the space programs, the sciences, just as these new shows will hopefully also leave their positive mark.

Star Trek Strange New Worlds is the best of Star Trek in the current era. Not having William Shatner do a cameo in any of the recent Star Trek incarnations is an abomination!

I like the idea of it being cyclical. People need to realize that, like the Star Wars universe, we have had a whole lot of Star Trek in one form and/or another for quite some time now. I was a fan of TOS in the 70s. Then we got the film franchise, then TNG in the 80s. Then DS9 and Voyager and Enterprise along with more films and a new timeline. Plus, some really excellent fan productions. I've enjoyed it all. We can debate about which series, movie, character etc. is better or worse, or we can all revel in the fact that we have been blessed with so much content. Beam me up!
P.S. edited to add that while I did not acknowledge the newest series, it is because I have not watched them other than SNW season 1 (which was phenomenal). But I will not pay for yet another streaming service at the moment.

  • @danieldickson3896
    @danieldickson3896 Před 19 dny +2

As someone new to this fandom, I really want to address my experience of the online space.
I know some fandoms can be "toxic," but it genuinely surprises me how much negativity I find in this fandom in the comments sections.
Surely, most Star Trek fans are not this unhappy with modern Star Trek. After all, half of all Paramount+ subscribers watch at least one new Star Trek show, and that whole streaming service would be nothing without Star Trek.
Compared to most modern franchises, I really admire Star Trek's restraint in not greenlighting loads of half-baked content. The people involved have addressed over-saturation and seem to be conscious of that. Look at Marvel as an example of a franchise that bit off more than it could chew.
So I struggle to see why this franchise is in danger. It seems to be really thriving right now and making all sorts of new content without overdoing it like Star Wars and Marvel. Those franchises seem to be in a much worse state than Star Trek.
For any streaming show in the current landscape to last five seasons is actually a real rarity. So the fact that we have five seasons of Lower Decks and Discovery is great, and ending them now to make way for more Strange New Worlds, Academy, and TV movies should be a really exciting prospect for the future of the franchise.
The thing about Academy that some people need to realize is that Star Trek needs to have a series that younger viewers can get into because the existing fan base is aging. The series needs to pull in younger viewers for its longevity. I think it’s a unique and engaging concept. From what I understand, everyone thought Deep Space 9 was a crazy idea before it aired, but it moved the franchise forward and made way for new ideas and new storytelling in the universe.
The constant hate on Discovery is really unwarranted, in my opinion. That show wouldn't have lasted five seasons if people weren't watching. It’s the series that pulled me into the universe. I found it to be engaging, and it inspired me to check out the older stuff too. I’m glad it tried to be a bit different and wasn’t a copy of what came before. This is a huge universe, and there’s room for all kinds of stories.

Star Trek, the original series was always popular. The reason it was canceled is because it started getting too expensive. It was going to be canceled after the second season. The fans demanded that it went on. Seeing that it was going to get even more expensive, the budget was reduced drastically. That is when the ratings started to dip and that was their justification to cancel the series. The slashing the budget they sabotaged the third season to have an excuse to cancel it. The original series continued in animated form and made its biggest success in syndication then, of course subsequent films and follow up series and all of the merchandise. Let's see a medical drama, a cop drama, a legal drama, a sitcom, etc. Starfleet could interface with the individual shows; kind of like how Captain Morgan Bateson and the crew of the USS Bozeman were part of a TNG episode. Let's see some tried and true formats set within the Star Trek franchise. If they're done right, they could be dy-no-mite!

My thoughts are this. When next gen, DS9, and Voyager was on it was all set in roughly the same timeline. The first problem is instead of Discovery being set a few decades later say in the 25th century it was set in the 23rd century. Then they travel to the 32nd century. Then Strange New Worlds premiers and they are in the 23rd century. This flip flopping timeline is the first problem. The second problem is the way the 23rd century technology is shown. It's too high tech looking. Not saying that some of our real world technology couldn't be applied to represent 23rd century tech but most of it is just too high tech looking. It should have looked more like a cross between the original series with just a small dash of early next gen series design thrown in. In the Enterprise 2 part episode In A Mirror Darkly the way the 23rd Century Defiant was shown was excellent. Some of the original props, set designs and the Defiant itself was upgraded slightly to reflect our advances in real world early 2000's technology but not so much to make it look too high tech. I remember when Episode 1 of Discovery was shown. The Shenzhou was way too advanced looking inside and out. Then when the Enterprise interior was shown in the Discovery episode it was way overdone, cluttered and way too high tech looking. Now comes the aliens. Klingons weren't broke so why did they have to change them? I can understand no hair because they still had traces of the modified augment DNA in their bodies but why did the heads have to be so big? Don't even get me started on the way they pronounced Kahless, Kahlesh??? WTF? Paramount/CBS this is why Trek is broken. The Picard series was a trainwreck. Season 1 was just barely ok, but after that it when downhill fast. Don't even try and have a Star Trek 4 movie. Scrap Discovery, Strange New Worlds and the Kelvin timeline movies. Make a series set in the early 25th century say starting in 2420 and only have one series at a time and no more cartoon trek and short treks. An occasional flashback episode is ok but no more flip flopping back and forth between multiple series. One of your biggest mistakes after Enterprise was cancelled was not showing a series about the Earth Romulan war. That would have been great.

I like the new stuff. People have been saying Discovery was gonna be cancelled after season 1. My biggest complaints is that they focused it too much on one character, and the whole adoptive sister to Spock. Could've created a whole new Vulcan character for that purpose. They're just following a trend that a lot of streaming services have doing for years. Create new shows some original some, based on known properties. Then either they conclude them properly or they abandon them completely, The Tick for example. Plus I assume actors today don't want to be tied down for a 20 + episode commitment due to the fact they want to pursue other projects.

Responding to the title of this video... Star Trek is not in a place for a "rebirth." It would have to end again for that. It's already had technically 4 rebirths, TMP, TNG, JJ Movies, Discovery.
Don't get me wrong, I think they should have at least had Lower Decks and Prodigy should have gone to the 7th season Trek standard. However, with Strange New Worlds running strong, and multiple Star Trek projects in production; everything is going strong in Trek in general. I really think that if they reveal Legacy happening, it will be after Discovery is over. I mean, after all, they'd easily be able to repurpose and redress the Discovery sets (hopefully extensively), reducing costs considerably.
The biggest issue Trek has is fatigue. There was too many shows at once distracting everyone. I mean, STW, Discovery, Prodigy, Picard, and Lower Decks all on at the same time was unprecedented. Too many to watch at the same time in this current time in our society. Personally, I think DS9 and VOY plus TNG movies proved that having two Trek shows on at the same time plus a singular cinema Trek movie franchise going on as well, was the perfect formula (the quality of some of those films not withstanding).

Yep, agreed on cyclical. I'm not TOO concerned like I was after Enterprise was considered a failure and was thought of maybe the end for TV Star trek series. Paramount Plus was really an important driver of getting Star Trek back on TV form.
The problem is now the "golden age" of companies doubling-down on streaming is ending and now companies are going to be more frugal with spending. The core truth is that Paramount knows that each additional Star Trek series doesn't really bring in new viewers. So, I think what their plan is to have ONE Star Trek series going at a time that is basically what they think is their most widely liked one and allow the others to finish. That explains why both cartoons have/will end and Discovery (which was more divisive) ends. They'll keep Strange New Worlds as the one and only until it's natural conclusion and then have the next ready to promote. Their goal will be to keep the loyal Star Trek subscribers while keeping costs to a minimum.

Star Wars, even with it's toxic fan base (I'm one of them), released too many series/movies/collectibles trying to get as much $$$ out of the IP as possible but in the end it burned audiences out. Perhaps the Star Trek producers are trying to keep this from happening and if it's cyclical as you say, then this is a good way to do just that.

I think people need to get used to the idea of 5 season shows with streaming that seems to be the cut off with most streaming shows

Well, Paramount would be wise to have their own Post production studio. Because it would be less expensive in the long run.

I love Lower Decks and am sad and also surprised they’re canceling after 5th season

It's The Churn. Even hit shows plateau sooner or later in gaining new subscribers. So, the services churn the playlists.

I'm guessing they are kinda shooting for 5 season runs, and move on to other projects. And given the possible mergers being thrown around, new creative leadership may not want to be tied down for another 2 + years per season on shows which have had a run. I would imagine the writers strike may be leading to cut-backs in numbers of in production programming as well, do to higher costs.

@raymondcanessa7208 There is no way that there is an adequate appetite for a Lower Decks movie for it to be a success.

@@pike100 Maybe on a streaming service like Section 32. Lower Deckers now senior staff on Enterprise E showing what happened on the "E" was not Worf's fault.

Lower Decks getting cancelled is the best Star Trek news I have ever heard. Thank you.

seems Lower Decks could be reworked into CGI w/o too much of a change. ergo, they'd just need to pay voice talent & scriptwriters. so, wouldn't cost much to make.
