Today, in our sports encyclopedia series we will talk about Dodgeball.
Dodgeball is a sport that involves players throwing balls and hitting their opponents while avoiding being hit themselves.
This game got famous due to the movie (DodgeBall a True Underdog Story), where a group of misfits enters a Las Vegas dodgeball tournament in order to save their local gym from being taken over.
The basic objective of the game for each player is to eliminate all players of the opposing team by throwing the game balls and hitting the opposing player below the shoulders on the fly.
Dodgeball is a team sport in which two teams compete against each other.
Matches of dodgeball are mostly played on a basketball court, volleyball court, a fenced area, or soccer field.
The number of dodgeballs used in every game is three to ten.
In the beginning of the game, the balls are lined up in the middle of the field.
After the game begins, the players rush towards the middle, grab the dodgeballs, and roll it to their teammates.
After this, they start throwing the ball towards the opposing team.
In case a player gets hits by the ball, and no one catches it, then that player is eliminated.
After getting eliminated, the players are required to move to the team’s bench area.
In a situation where the thrown ball is caught by a player, then the player who threw the ball is eliminated.
Once the player is eliminated, they may re-enter the field if their teammate catches a ball thrown by the opponent but only if the maximum numbers are not already playing.
The players are only allowed to hold the ball for 10 seconds.
After ten seconds the ball is considered dead and the ball must be immediately rolled over to the other team.
At the end of the match duration, the team with maximum wins is declared as the winner.
When there is only one player left in each team, they have 10 seconds to hit each other out.
If they fail to do so, Showdown comes into effect and the game is paused.
In a showdown, each player gets two balls, two balls are lined up at the ends of the centerline, and the centerline is dissolved.
The first player to get the other player out wins.
If teams are tied, there will be a sudden death game to determine match winner.
