  • Venlo is a Dutch city in the southernmost province of Limburg. It is close to the German border on the river Muese. Venlo was one of the first cities in the Netherlands to be partly liberated from the German occupation around December 3, 1944. This only concerned the part of the city west of the river Muese near Blerick. The success of this partial liberation was due to Operation Nutcracker, conceived by British Major General Miles who was in command of the Second British Army.
    The east of Venlo remained in German hands until it was liberated in its entirety on the 1st of March 1945. Between December 1944 and March 1945, the Meuse formed the war front between the Allies and Germany. The eastern part of Venlo experienced the starvation winter, just like half of the Netherlands north of the three major rivers that cross and divide the country in the middle.
    This film shows unedited images from shortly after the complete liberation of Venlo in March 1945. We see the central preparation of soup in the municipal soup kitchen and its distribution on the Grote Markt in front of the, curiously enough, almost intact town hall. We also see water supply in the suburbs of the city. The service trucks belonged to the Food Flying Squad, an organization that alleviated the emergency in the liberated areas by distributing hot soup and providing drinking water in those towns and villages where the food supply had seriously stagnated and public facilities had failed. The trucks had been donated to the Food Flying Squad by various allied agencies.
    This is the first time that we have used new enhancer software. The results are now so good that it has become possible to upscale the footage to 4K and add motion smoothness by using 60 fps as framerate.

    NEDERLANDS:
    ============
    Venlo was één van de eerste steden in Nederland die al rond 3 december 1944 ten dele werd bevrijd van de Duitse bezetting. Dat betrof uitsluitend het deel van de stad ten westen van de Maas bij Blerick. Het succes van deze gedeeltelijke bevrijding was te danken aan Operatie Nutcracker dat was bedacht door de Britse Generaal-majoor Miles die het commando voerde van het tweede British Army.
    Het oosten van Venlo bleef in Duitse handen totdat het op 1 maart 1945 in zijn geheel werd bevrijd. Tussen december 1944 en maart 1945 vormde de Maas het oorlogsfront tussen de geallieerden en Duitsland. Het Oostelijke deel van Venlo onderging de hongerwinter net als de helft van Nederland boven de grote rivieren.
    Deze film toont ongemonteerde beelden van kort na de volledige bevrijding van Venlo in maart 1945. We zien de centrale bereiding van soep in de gemeentelijke gaarkeuken en de uitdeling daarvan op de Grote markt voor het, merkwaardig genoeg, bijna ongeschonden stadhuis. Ook zien we waterlevering in de buitenwijken van de stad.
    De verzorgingstrucks behoorden tot het Food Flying Squad, een organisatie die de eerste nood in de bevrijde gebieden lenigde door uitdeling van warme soep en verstrekking van drinkwater in die steden en dorpen, waar de voedselvoorziening ernstig stagneerde en de openbare voorzieningen uitgevallen waren. De trucks waren door allerlei geallieerde instanties aan het Food Flying Squad geschonken.
    Dankzij nieuwe A.I. software kunnen we nu de beelden opschalen naar 4K kwaliteit met 60 fps. Daardoor oogt alles zeer scherp en is het afspelen zeer vloeiend! Kijk dus vooral in 4K !!

    A new A.I. has been used to enhance the B&W footage. The results are even better than before and now also in 4K at 60 fps. Thus far I thought enhancing old footage to 4K makes no sense, but this new A.I. has opened new doors!

      Although Venlo was liberated in 1945 (or partly even December 1944), it was certainly not one of the first cities in Limburg to be liberated. The whole of South Limburg, including the capital Maastricht, had already been liberated 3 months earlier, in September 1944!

    The quality of these enhanced films is undeniable. It really gives the impression that they were filmed yesterday. While not intended to demonstrate technical advances, it might be appropriate to offer the original film for comparison on a split screen. There is a great deal to be said for the original unaltered witness documents, especially as the gap between then and now gets greater, and there are fewer and fewer left to tell the stories.

    • @Rick88888888
      @Rick88888888  Před 2 lety +1

      I do sometimes make a split screen version, especially to demonstrate new techniques like here czcams.com/video/dCMEwGXkFqo/video.html, but I don´t intend to do it every time. You can always watch the original B/W footage via the original source (you´ll have to find it yourself). CZcams prohibits me to also separately upload the B/W original in parallel to the enhanced, colorized version because that is construed as `re-used content´ which has already caused demonetization of my entire channel twice!

Colorized footage sound added". Kan die ook in 4k overgezet worden. Dat zou super zijn. Het is al fantastisch dat hij ingekleurd is, maar 4k zou het nog mooier maken.
