As someone who experienced a very similar assault during the Russian-Georgian war in 2008, I don't need much imagination to understand how this couple felt. Luckily we miraculously survived (including our 2 children), although my wife was badly wounded. I wish them the very best - and the Russian forces a fundamental defeat.

I'm so happy that man survived! For him it's a true miracle, because a lot of civilians in Kherson city and Mykolaiv oblast was attacked the same way and so many people are died.
Thee is no proof of people being attacked indiscriminately and killed. The fact that the woman was allowed out of the battle Zone safely is proof that no one attempted to kill her while she was being guided to safety.

I am in Odesa. I work with a group of Ukrainian volunteers. One, Yuriy, comes from Kherson. He left for Odesa early in the war but his grandparents stayed behind in a dacha on one of the islands by Kherson. When Kherson was liberated they sought to cross over to Kherson in an open boat powered by a small outboard engine. A russian soldier on the russian bank shot his grandmother dead. She was clearly an elderly woman. It was deliberate murder.

A worse case I saw like this happened in the first weeks of the war, Ukrainian grandparents car was fired on by BMP, whole car was shredded... no warning, just murdered. Another one I remembered was a checkpoint that showed russians stopping civilian cars, executing the people and dragging their bodies away into a pile hidden from the road.

I seen those as well, it was horrible. This makes me question the phone call they tied to this incident. A BMP would have shredded that car and killed them both. I suppose it's possible the BMP just hit the engine area and he was wounded by debris.

How can a couple driving in such a dangerous death road?

Tends to happen in war. The longer it goes on, the younger the commanders get because so many seasoned veterans die and young recruits are moved up through the ranks quickly to fill positions.
