"Downfalls"? Adventure bike, or Dual Sport bike..? Be careful where your expectations lie here. We can criticize all sorts of stuff at the 'price point', but many of the things you're pointing out are preferred adjustments for specific riding needs with the expectation of having issues 'if this' and 'for that'... The Tenere 700 is an 'Adventure' bike (whatever interpretation is put on that term), it is not a WR700 (with the engineered detail that would got into such). Now that's a bike many of us would be very interested in indeed, but as a recreational, or comp bike would surely have to retail at a significantly higher price. The key thing is, does the Tenere 700 at core provide a basic bike to offer the purchaser great possibility with function and dependability, for the outlay? So far - too right! BUT you ARE going to have to invest and adapt from that price point. Downfalls? Well, manufacturing compromises to fit a price point, maybe?

Absolutely 100% Wright to the point I would also add that it’s a bit shame that it seems like all Japanese manufacturers just follow same trend ... take all the parts they already have on the shelves and make a bike
      To me sad and boring
But the time you end up modifying this bike to make it good and cool the price will be close 2/3 year old premium adv bike

awesome commentary! I ride motorcycles for 26 years non stop. I own a T7 for about a year now coming from smaller dirt bikes and much experience in MX tracks back when I was a lot younger & I'm love the T7 so much!! my main downsides for this bike is sometimes the suspension feedback back and forth is unexpected if riding fast and the weights, losing 20 - 30 kilograms will ensure a much much better bike.

I don't disagree with your commentary on the bike's negatives per se - I got mine in October - but I see things a bit differently. The T-7 is a legit Adventure bike that people are choosing to RIDE like a "big dirt bike". I know that ruffles some skirts out there, but I think it is very true and this is why:
    1) It's built around the MT-07 Engine which is one of the most successful naked bikes on the market. Will it rip on the trails? Oh yeah, we know it will. Does is carve on the street? Oh HELL yes, you better believe it does - because it is designed to.
    2) It's set up for adventure riding, not dirt bike riding. What's adventure riding? Everyone has their opinion - for some people it is rarely going on asphalt. For others (like me) It's riding 60/40. I wanted a bike that I can comfortably pack up, ride on all sort of roads to the places I wanna see and then also be able to explore fire roads like you are doing in this video. And the T-7 does all of this beautifully.
    3) It's weight, size and geometry. It's 450 pounds, it has a fairly large, TALL front end, A fairly large instrument and headlight tower and it's stock suspension isn't really set up for heavy off-roading (a complaint that every dirt biker who has bought the bike has screamed about endlessly) - because its a freakin' ADV bike! - That people are trying to ride like a dirt bike! Personally, if I wanted an Enduro bike that would barely see asphalt, then I would have would have gone for something like Honda's new CRF450L and kitted that out for heavy off roading.
I am happy with my T-7 and I think it is going to be amazing for this coming riding season and it will see plenty of Asphalt and a good deal of gravel and hard pack - as it is designed for. My 2 cents - flame away.

    • @SwankyCatProductions
      @SwankyCatProductions  Před 3 lety +4

Oh yeah I couldn't agree more! I totally didn't realize it but it sort of sounded like I was saying it was only a big dirt bike and not good for adv. I think it's actually the perfect ADV bike, super capable both on and off road. Even though I don't really do hwy stretches longer than an hour at a time I could see loading it up and riding much much farther. Actual dirt bikes are cool but I've never been on the Tenere and wished I was on a 450 with a smaller windshield, I always know I'll enjoy having both the 700 motor and wind protection on the way back home. The KLR was a great bike for how I ride, just didn't have the power I wanted, the T7 is PERFECT.

Ben, won’t the pannier racks for the Tenere protect the exhaust? When I was doing my research on it I was concerned about that same issue. The guys from outback motortrek were really confident about their racks and the added protection. Also, their front crash bars really kept the sides of the bikes high off the ground when it goes down. Watch their video where they drag the Tenere off it’s kickstand behind a truck and drag it for 25-30 yards on both sides. Bike was well protected. Plus you’ll need the racks when you travel with us in 2022. Would be fun if you could make a few days of the trip with us. You and your dad.

( Edit: I also have Outback Motortek bars on the front (top and bottom), and they've also dont a great job at keeping the damage off my bike as well. Now that you have a Gen 3 KLR and have done some off road, I would be curious of your pro's and con's off road between the two. Both have their advantages I'm sure. But like how the Tenere is a bit more top heavy, with the gas tank so high due to the engine height, I've seen where it's harder to pick up if you lay it down, but how does that translate to trails vs the lower center of the KLR. Honestly, I understand that there's pro's and con's of each, curious your take on them. Might be a video idea, and maybe you have already done that and I just haven't found it yet. The more of your videos I watch, the more I lean towards a middle weight adventure motorcycle over the Honda 300L/300L Rally... Low fender is not a sport bike fender - just look at Dakar rally bikes... And Tenere is defo Dakar look-a-like bike. It's styled as a rally bike, not a dirt bike. There's also aerodynamic reason for it - at high speed (and this bike can do 120 MPH) high fender, especially such cumbersome like yours can cause vibration and lack of directional stability. Benefit of high fender is that mud won't pack up between the wheel and the fender , but Tenere's fender is adjustable, and if you going on a tenere to mud deeper than the axis of your wheels - you doing something wrong here :-)

I have the OEM racks and guards on my T7. It does offer additional protection to exhaust. I am still very interested in tucking the exhaust in closer when that mod hits the street. Anti-bobble head is a great upgrade if you ride off-road. I think I will buy a shifter linkage arm and zip-tie it under the seat just to have. Probably a non-issue, but its on my mind. Interesting you were in 2nd gear most of the time ad the engine was just cruising. At the speed you were going (around 25-35) and on those types of roads I would be in 3rd gear and shifting to 2nd often on my 1190. The T7 motor seems much more suited to that sort of riding than many of the bigger bikes plus it kills them in more technical riding. Plus once I crank the throttle in the dirt on my 1190 it loses traction at the same speed the T7 would so I wouldn't be going any faster on gravel roads. The only time I would rather have my 1190 is during straight line acceleration on black top (which never gets old), fast sweeping twisties (fun but I would rather dirt roads these days) and track days (which I've only done twice). Otherwise the T7 is better in almost every way, including comfort and cool factor. The only problem I had with my test ride of the T7 is it didn't feel special and although the T7 is considered a value buy, if I'm going to drop that much money on a bike I want it too feel special....

I never even think about it on the T7, where as on my KLR I felt like I always between gears yet was never in the right one no matter what lol. The first time I rode my Tenere (granted it was the first time I'd been on a bike in months and my last ride ended abruptly when I got pulverized by a van) I was sort of uncomfortable and unsure of what I really thought. It felt good but idk sort of off. But now with just under 800 miles I absolutely love this machine. I'm not sure if it was me or just that the seat, suspension and motor needed some time or what but it's all come together quite nicely.

@@daedalus9042 just the little foam cap that it came with. Works fine for speeds under 45 mph, after that things get a little noisy.

Seems like the suspension can’t soak up stutter bumps?

@A Stoic's Door I have less than 500 miles so far but I like it.Same engine as my FZ07 which is great. The T7 has as much clearance, maybe more than the CRF450L and the XR650L.I used to have a 650L.

@A Stoic's Door Yeah you are correct.I don't need that much clearance as I am old and won't be riding that carzy.Unless I do.:-) Where in Mn are ya?

    You could buy a roadbike like a MT-09 and a motocross like a CRF250/450.
OR you buy a dual purpose bike like that Ténéré, which can do both! But maybe not perfect.

True and I'd much rather have the T7 so I can enjoy the roads on the way to the trails!
