    That first shot of the "engine compartment" showing the battery location, I was trying to figure out how you'd easily get to that around the motor, then I wondered, where's the motor. That's when I remembered it was an electric truck (thus Lightning). I'm old enough to remember when a Ford F-150 Lightning wasn't electric. Great install and thanks for sharing, I've picked up some tips for my upcoming HF mobile install. Love the board under the carpet most of all. 73, KS5KY

    Hey Josh just wanted to take a second to say thanks for all the informative videos. I am down in east San Diego county. I hunt, fish, fly RC planes and I am always on youtube channels/forums pertaining to those hobbies. I'm not sure I have ever come across a channel as informative as yours in any hobby. I got involved with GMRS and got my license after using some radios to stay in contact with my son out quail hunting. That kind of sent me down the rabbit hole and after learning how to program and listen in on the ham repeaters I was all in. I passed my technician test this morning and your video's were a monumental help. Be well, Brian.

    I've had a half dozen F-150s. Always easier to go out from the cab through that rear vent than trying to go in through the vent. Mount a Rigrunner inside the drivers compartment next to that grommet. Run all your electronics off of that, each one is fused separately.

    Great video Josh and Shane. I have an IC7000 and a Yaesu FTM400 with both radio faces mounted on a Lido L-Max (plus a Target tuner for the Tarheel) in my Ineos Grenadier. Radio bodies are mounted to homebrew mounts tucked behind each front seat with power distribution from a RigRunner board. Routing coax from roof lines on each side was a doozy! It needs a lot of planning and as you showed is very satisfying at the end when it all comes together.

    Excellent idea using a board under the carpet. After seeing this, my installation plan in my 2024 Tundra now incudes mounting the main body of my iCom 7000 under my seat using a 1/4 inch sheet of ABS plastic under the carpet. After trimming and heat molding if needed, I will use flat head screws countersunk up through the plastic, then carpet, then the mount with washers and nylock nuts. I also use the crap put of 3M Dual Lock for mic mounts etc.

    Now you need to bond and ground the engine, doors, tailgate, exhaust, cab, and bed. One inch wide ground straps as short as possible onto bare metal surfaces then covered with clear Krylon, non metallic paint to protect each joint. I've done tons of mobile HF, VHF, and UHF installs over my 30+ years as an Armature Radio Operator. You may be doing great in your driveway however, once you get on the road, you'll begin to notice engine noise and alternator whine. The board under the carpet is an old school method we used back in the 80's and 90's until the newer vehicles didn't have much grounding. You want to hard mount the radio to the floor board, especially in an all aluminum body. The more metal contact the radio body has, the better. You wont regret it. I installed an IC-7100 in my friends F-350 under the rear seat and I slit the carpet just enough to get the mounting bracket mounted to the bare floor board with locking nuts, washers, and bolts, not screws. It's a PITA to do however, the end results are superb. Good Luck OM and best 73's de N6JRZ.

  • @BurtonChristmasLites

    Robert KD4YDC here. Josh I love the Breedlove mounts. I have the one that is a bar where as you had to drill two holes in the front bed panel and then it "L 's" back toward the back of the bed (#313) then I also have the Stud Mount with a SO 239 (#207). That way when I hopefully add a Baby Tarheel, it will hold it. I can shake my whole truck when pulling on that mount. Not going anywhere. I do have some concerns about going through that vent. It is a flap type of vent that can introduce moisture into that area. I have seen that happen in other installs. For that reason, I just put some zip tie blocks on the truck and brought the coax in through the door bottom. Using Wireman RG58 coax.

    Pro tip, stretch your electrical tape while applying. Squeeze tapping holds better than just relying on the sticky.
    Also, never use soap for fishing wires, “soap” is slang for wire pulling jell but using real soap is silly…. Soap as it dries or gets thin actually grabs on like glue, that’s how it gets the germs off….
    And it may work sometimes but it still bite you others, especially in conduit.
    Laundry soap isn’t quite as sticky, I would use water based lotion in a pinch.

    Perhaps unrelated, but something to ponder:
    Based on the lack of shops for repairing ham radios (and high labor costs), I’m questioning whether it’s wise for consumers to invest in expensive rigs. I own high-quality Icom gear from the late 90s. If and when they fail, I will turn to quality “budget” radios.

    Good idea adding the toroid on the power cable. I wouldn’t assume the ground from the bed to the cab is good. Maybe add some braiding to bond the bed to the cab. I also added braiding to the exhaust system on my 2015 F250. Are you picking up ignition noise from the coil-on-plug system? A good NB will filter that. Have fun!

    @schnitznschnatzn Před 5 měsíci

    I love your lightning. How bad is the RFI from the motor controller when you're driving? Btw, the ATAS is a great little antenna, however, you don't want to leave that bulky thing mounted while driving or at least tune it to 10 or 6m. It will otherwise self-destruct. I keep mine under the rear seat and just use a cheap Cameleon style antenna for most of the time with the FC-50 tuner. I think this works just as good or even better than the ATAS-120. I was talking to a bunch of DL and OE stations on 20m 2 weeks ago while driving down to South Carolina. Can't or at least shouldn't do that with the ATAS, definitely not on 40m. Ask me how I know :D
    Also, I bet you could easily run a little 500W solid state amp off the power outlet for these "can you hear me now" POTA activations - LOL :D

    Are you running with a direct connection to the 12V battery? That caused any issues?
    For Teslas I've been told you shouldn't run directly off the 12v since the vehicle supposedly tries to account for all the energy in and out of the 12v to gauge its health.
    Reason being if running the radio directly from the 12V the vehicle doesn't know about the radio using power and may think the 12V has failed since it will constantly be lower state of charge than the vehicle thinks it ought to be.

    Is there any particular reason you chose to mount the antenna on the Curb/Tree side of the vehicle? Any time you park in the street at the curb the antenna will be smacking the trees. Maybe not on your own street, but in general…

      @waakca Před 5 měsíci

      I agree. I always mounted my taller antennas on the driver's side to avoid trees if I parked against a curb.

    is the ATAS able to handle the high speeds of highway driving well? I'd have to mount on my hood if I got one but i worry about 85mph on the interstate

      It was mounted on my commuter car for four years before upgrading to the F-150 all high speeds. It’s been great. I don’t tune it under full speed though.

    Curious as to why you mounted the antenna on the right side of the truck vice the left side. I’ve always mounted.big HF on the left side. Generally there is more overhead height clearance towards the center of the road on the left side vice the right (curb) side to minimize the risk of bonking three branches and especially arched shaped underpasses. Lots of those here on the East coast, like in the Merit Parkway in CT and the Southern State parkway on Long Island NY.
    On our 2012 Tacoma, the Icom 7100 main body is mounted under then under the driver seat and the power and antenna cables cone up through the floor through a slit cut in a large rubber plug in the floor pan and carpet above it. There are two such plugs one on the left side of the truck and one on the right side, perfect locations for running wires through. Avoids the hassle of running power through the firewall. The adjustable large cleats that run in the rails along the inside of the fender lit tops on Tacomas and Tundras can be drilled to take 3/8 z 24 antenna mounting hardware, you csn buy the cleats at Toyota dealers for relativey cheap money.
    Curious on how bad the RFI from the electric drive system is In the Lightning, especially on the lower frequency HF 3:07 3:07 3:07 bands while underway.

      Yes, good point, though many of them out here are more like a carport than a little overhang. Then you either take down the antenna or do the walk in thing.
