To get more gold you could try a sea fort these can get a fair amount of good loot which is a variety, this can help get gold in the early game. The forts are a few waves of one shot ghosts so use a pistol. Great video
Late to the party, but.. You *can* drop the anchor if you absolutely need to, as long as you immediately raise it back up. Also Sea Forts are indeed a pretty decent way to make some early-game gold, plus you can farm supplies from the barrels. Ghost Ship voyages from the Order of Souls can be a great way to practice ship positioning and getting your aim down for cannonballs.
