    That was a clear answer from Richman there.
    I think that's where the backbone of his music is, in that statement: if you like it, then it's good music, there is no more important criteria.

    The Lamb -William Blake
    Little Lamb who made thee
    Dost thou know who made thee
    Gave thee life & bid thee feed.
    By the stream & o'er the mead;
    Gave thee clothing of delight,
    Softest clothing wooly bright;
    Gave thee such a tender voice,
    Making all the vales rejoice!
    Little Lamb who made thee
    Dost thou know who made thee
    Little Lamb I'll tell thee,
    Little Lamb I'll tell thee!
    He is called by thy name,
    For he calls himself a Lamb:
    He is meek & he is mild,
    He became a little child:
    I a child & thou a lamb,
    We are called by his name.
    Little Lamb God bless thee.
    Little Lamb God bless thee.

    @1nceBitten2wiceShy it kinda just looked like he was having fun, to me. If you watch the clip from The Cutting Edge (also on CZcams) from around the same time, he is pretty straightforward there as well. this is just my theory, as I have not discussed this with him....

  • @ThisIsSoul67
    @ThisIsSoul67 Před 13 lety +1

    @1nceBitten2wiceShy I have watched your clip as well as a lot of other interviews with Jojo. I think one big difference is the point in time. Around this time, he was playing with the version of a band he still considers the best he had ever played with - and the music they were making was magical and joyful. By 1986, there had been different band headaches, different label headaches, different press headaches. Or maybe Jojo was just having fun with you all with a playful (irritating?) put-on.

      Don't forget that the first Modern Lovers album that came out in 1976 was originally recorded in 1972. Jonathan and the band had many creative differences by 1978. David Robinson and Jerry Harrison were long gone from The Modern Lovers prior to this interview. And it was not a put-on.

    Liked him better mocking the nasal, professorial drawl of the Boston ruling classes in the first incarnation of the Modern Lovers. Couldn't get into his subsequent kiddie-style records.
    And he was not that innocent, I understand he was always an unabashed womanizer. He was a goofy, upper-class twit. Ever hear his song about riding Greyhound buses and laughing at "the welfare mama" passenger? Charming.
    But that first record was just stunning. One of the very best ever made.

      That song you're talking about is in a country style so maybe you're missing the allusions to other country songs as will happen with time. I've heard way worse from well meaning musicians.
      He also subtly talks down to his audience at times but they're too stupid to get what he what he means. You can stay home and leave more room for deserving people.

      @@sidclark1953 I guess you've never been in a crowded show full of drunk people barely paying attention to the show, looking at their phones and talking loudly. So yes I feel the same way as him about being in the moment and appreciating what's in front of you. I would have loved to move up closer to the front but I come late to shows. That's my problem.
