it’s like every facet of our lives has been monetized. You can’t do anything without either trying to spend money or make money. Everything is getting catered to a small amount of people who have the most money and it’s all being built in the most wasteful and unsustainable way. It’s exhausting

Even if they did add it, that tech can be made and has been made from a long time ago without NFTs/blockchain. AAA and Indie gaming are becoming a perfect mirror image of Blockbuster versus Redbox. Blockbuster, in pursuit of steady growth to the detriment of customer loyalty, chased away all their clientele. Going to Blockbuster didn't just mean renting a game anymore. Now you were getting hounded at the counter to open a line of credit, get a rewards card, rent five more videos so you could get the seventh free, buy overpriced popcorn and soda, etc. Redbox, ultimately inferior to what Blockbuster USED to be, offered the one thing that mattered to people who liked renting media- the media.

I've only ever been able to argue against NFTs (somewhat) from the perspective of an artist (yes, I need to get more of my art out there), and how many small time artists have their art stolen by crypto bros who tokenize someone's art, and then sell it as an NFT. The tokenizer can make a lot of money selling what is essentially a receipt for your art that claims they "own it" to lots of gullible people, while you, the artist doesn't see a single bit of that money. "Trickle-down economics" is just economics. If you make good decisions in your life, like not spending frivolously, finishing your education, not having a kid before you're ready, investing your money properly, and bettering yourself so you're not working food service your whole life and complaining why you're not being paid more for just existing in one place, you will be financially successful. Life isn't a zero-sum game, and it isn't a charity event where you show up and get something. You need to learn to survive. Part of learning to survive is financial savvy. Part of financial savvy is investing. They don't tell you this in school, but you are SUPPOSED TO INVEST your money. That's how you make more money. You don't make money from your 9-5 office job, and especially not your 11-7, or 3-11 second shift at Target or wherever. That's supposed to maybe cover your nut, but more importantly that's the starter cash for your portfolio. After you get that going, you better yourself, you learn a skill, or negotiate a higher position or salary at work. You are not supposed to work at Taco Bell from age 16 through 70 and expect to have your financial needs met as they scale up over the course of one's lifetime, that is not how economics or reality works. If you are working at the same job in your late 20s that you had as a teenager, regardless of your circumstance, you are doing it wrong.

Phantom Galaxies was an NFT where you can pilot these giant mechs that could transform. You were about to fully customize them and the mechs themselves were the NFT but they also mentioned that each mech had unique weapons meaning you could sell a really strong mech to other players. The one silver lining about this is that previously burned out players have been flocking to indie games, and their market share has been steadily growing every year. Obviously an indie game is not automatically better than a AAA game because of a label, but more options and healthy competition is always good for the consumer.

    • @bricaaron3978

The problem is that it's not an issue of whether one is "better" than the other -- it's the fact that "Indie"** games can never and will never be a _replacement_ for AAA games. AAA games have always existed, since before the term was even used. There has always been and always will be a difference between a game that costs _x_ to make, and a game that costs _10x_ - _1000x_ to make.
_On the whole,_ I would rather play a AAA game from 30 years ago than a modern "Indie" game.
** I don't put 'Indie' in quotes derisively, but simply because the designation doesn't accurately apply these days, since 99.99% of "Indie" games are not self-distributed, but have "publishers" (Steam, GOG, etc.). A more accurate term (Not a _good_ term -- just a more accurate one) would be something like 'A game' or 'B game', since the only meaningful differentiating factor today is the quality and quantity of the final product, and not whether a dev uses a publisher or self-distributes.

It doesn't sound like you actually like games in the proper sense -- it sounds like you are more into simulations/puzzles/sandboxes. A case in point is that Minecraft is not a game, it's a sandbox. There is no gameplay. You don't win or lose. You just have fun with the tools you are given.
That kind of thing can be a lot of fun of course, but that's not the same thing as a game, which has concrete goals which the player either succeeds to meet or fails. An early example of this kind of experience is SimAnt (From Maxis Software, the company that created SimCity, SimTower, etc.). Maxis even called its products "Software Toys" in order to acknowledge that they couldn't be properly classified as games.
At any rate, what about Text Adventures? Graphical Adventures? Arcade games? 2D Platformers? 3D Platformers? Real-Time Strategy? Turn-Based Strategy? Real-Time Tactical? Role-Playing Games? God games? Shoot-Em Ups? Brawlers? Immersive Sims? Racing games? Etc., etc.?
By all means play what you like, but it sounds like an "old" video game to you is one that came out ten years ago. Even if we limit it just to the greatest game ever made, there are still hundreds and hundreds of them from the past 40+ years.

@@Cloud-og1qo Well first, I don’t think skins should even be worth $20 (a skin does not add an extra 25% of value to a $60 game but at this point in modern gaming who knows?) That said, at most they should be about $5 development time and costs considered, especially with potentially thousands of players buying it. Being able to resell a skin, especially if it’s a duplicate or one you don’t like would be cool, but I would much rather have it be purchasable by other players through in-game currency than real money, much like how in Forza games you can go to the in-game auction house and buy/flip cars with credits. This system should also not effect the in-game grind. It should be a reasonable amount of time you spend trying to get something, and anything in game should be realistically obtainable with your own in-game effort (based on the average person of course). The ability to purchase things should be for people with more money than time on their hands, and that is one of the few places where I would be ok with a company having a stream of revenue as long as the items obtainable through real money are also obtainable through some sort of gameplay. That’s just my own two cents though, I’m sure some people would prefer if they could sell their skins for real money, but I’m sure the company will also take a decent cut of that money, and there might be some legality issues as well.

You kinda touched on this point but didn't go all the way: NFTs in video games are completely and utterly pointless because the entire pitch of NFTs, guaranteeing "true ownership" in a decentralized network, is completely null and void in video games.
The blockchain might be decentralized, but Ghost Recon Break Point certainly isn't. At the end of the day, if Ubisoft decides to tell me to go fuck myself, they might not be able to remove the NFT from my wallet but they will be able to remove the skin tied to it from my account, making my NFT worthless.
As long as the game is owned and controlled by a centralized company, the "true ownership" that NFTs promise is basically impossible. Decentralization + Centralization = Centralization.

The dumbest thing IMO (which you sort of covered at the end) is that all these use cases can be done with something like the steam marketplace. There's no need for a blockchain-based system to do this. Even the case of using an NFT to unlock stuff in multiple games... you could just have the other games query if you bought the microctransaction elsewhere.
This part was what made me think companies might back off this actually - since they stand to make more money selling you things that you can't transfer to other games or other people, and has to be a major reason why they don't allow trades like this under current setups.

As for shutting down, while this is true, the main point I was trying to make is that so many people seem to be touting NFTs as enabling this sort of trading when it wasn't possible before. The main reason it hasn't been possible is because the companies selling you MTX stuff don't want you to be able to buy from anyone other than them, same reason Nintendo has always hated the 2nd hand market.

Who owns what and where's my weapons and armor NFTs?? They don't know because all their data is gone. IPFS and blockchain can store the NFT files and metadata forever and the data cannot be changed by nefarious actors or by the crashing or loss of hundreds or perhaps even thousands of nodes.

The skins won't have any function, but you can show them off to your friends in the virtual reality, for example VRChat.
Digital apparel could be integrated to VR avatars, which could also add value to NFTs. So those pants (which are ugly by the way) can be worn by your avatar, if the skeleton permits it.
Basically, it's displaying your virtual trophies in VR social hubs.
