      Millet. Feed them fresh veggies with just a little bit of seed mixed in in the morning, then hand feed them seed with the palm of your hand to get them to see your hand as a food source. Next also feed them millet with your hand and ask them to sit on your finger to “earn” millet. You can watch Alex AXP and Budgie World to see how

    • @almondthecockatiel
      @almondthecockatiel Před 4 lety +2

      I can be of some help I hope. Over the summer, after a couple months of research, I got my first cockatiel. GET THEM GENDER TESTED! If you are getting more than one, get their sex tested before taking them home. You don't want to accidentally get a male and female and them breeding. Because that's a whole level of mess that isn't for beginners. Make sure you get a cage with plenty of room for the two. Look up diet requirements. If you are getting hand raised birds, you can go straight into handling them, if not, give them two weeks to acclamate to their new environment. It's not bad to get their wings clipped when you first bring them home! And something small that people don't know well is that you shouldn't get your birds plastic toys, they are dangerous for them. Get natural wooden toys! If you have any more questions you can feel free to ask! I'll answer them the best I can
      I'm not a professional. I just have also recently gotten a cockatiel!

    • @KevinandKrista
      @KevinandKrista  Před 4 lety +1

      Anna Adeele - I agree on the gender testing. Do you know if they'll be hand-raised? Those tend to be cuddlier and more ready to bond with you. I also think getting their wings clipped is a good idea, at least until they're familiar with their environment. There's a lot less chance of injury - bumping into windows, etc. - if they can't fly very fast. Good luck!

    My budgie is amazing at step up, gives kisses, and is target trained. And he loves to spend all day going into and out of his cage. Until night time and it’s time to go into his cage, where he REFUSES to go into his cage and obsessively flies to my parrotlets cage. We’ve learned to get the parrotlet all set up and in bed first, but budgie still wants into the parrotlets cage instead at night. We tried changing their spots in the room, but no, it’s just that he wants to be with the parrotlet. Not gonna happen, parrotlet will tolerate him but only so much and needs to be supervised. When I used the stick technique he tried to bite the stick then flew to the parrotlets cage and started running across the top of the cage and back 😩

    So, Pillow is well conditioned to a cue for returning to cage. It seems to be a pretty good compromise, because you also have a food reward for going back. The "purists" would probably say that initially chasing him with the stick is not the best policy, but I know that it's not always easy with budgies... I have a different method for my 5 budgies, and I prefer that they go in by themselves without my physical intervention, but what's important, as you say, is to control our birds. Just as your "chasing" is no longer necessary, I initially train mine with positive reinforcement and millet spray, but after a while it is not longer necessary... See "Getting My 5 Budgies Into Their Cages". Best regards!
