A sound capture card is on my shopping list so I can do these videos properly
In this test, I don't think there was much in it. If I recorded the same song with and without dbx, the 965 would blow it away

To compare 2 decks there must be some service first.
Both decks must be in perfect mechanical performance.
Both decks must be calibrated on factory specs values by service manual.
Both decks azimuth and speed must be aligned with the same reference tape and oscilloscope,wow/flutter meter etc.

The RS-AZ7 does not need a second capstan roller due to the very high sensitivity of the new (at that time) amorphous head. The manufacturer abandoned it not because of savings, but because with this type of playback head there is no need for a second roller. There is no need to tighten the tape so much to the head.

    No good comparsion:
    1) You enabled "Play Direct" on the AZ7.
Play Direct sucks ! Record in Dolby C, activate Dolby C and play it again.
    2) Do you know the history from your RZ7 ? Maybe some idiot used a Head Clean Device, and fucked up the Head, and now the Head is in bad condition.
I have a AZ7 in Top Condition and it sounds awesome.

    • @REALSlutHunter
      @REALSlutHunter Před 6 lety

Even Best decks need Dolby, not because of noise, but because of dynamic and bass precision, that's why even Studio Decks got Dolby S
I like the noisy, high, and reverb sound from "non dolby" too, but that's in the first moment, it's subjective.
But when i hear exactly and compare it to the Original from my Technics SL PS770D the Dolby C recording is way more like the original (and that's the Point for a good recording ! Not to change it to much) the HiHats, Bass Precision & deepness is without Dolby C, miles away from the SL PS770.
Take a Track like "Out of space" from Prodigy.
Record & Play it with Dolby C acivated, then try it without, there are worlds in precision between non Dolby and Dolby C.
Like i mention before, the Play Direct Function suck !
Make a comparsion, when both Decks use Dolby C, and upload the Original too.
Most PC Sound Cards sound like shit ! My SL PS 770D rapes my Asus Xonar DGX.

Ok do that. I dont say the RS-B965 is worse or better as the RS AZ 7 but thrust me when i say, the RS AZ 7 sounds excellent with Type 2 & 4 Tapes (especially with TDK) and Dolby C.
Check out some fast drum'n'bass stuff, with many channels, deep bass and fast break beats.
Maybe the guy from the refurbish Service , did not know that he harm the Amorpheus Z Head if he try to demagnetize it ?
Did he change the Head vs a replacment head ?
Look, this guy here is some from this audiophile freaks (i think his sound equipment is in the 10-20k range)

AZ7 по сравнению с B965, дешёвая игрушка, особенно если заглянуть во внутрь, хотя и со всеми опциями.

Sorry mate but the AZ7 is a pure joke in comparasion to any decent 3head deck.
Heads are mounted on PLASTIC and dont even retain azimuth! All gears are usually molten (if they re not , they will) Mechanism is a joke.
That thing was made to run 5-10 years MAX.

after 90s most deck manufacturers started cutting costs everywhere in design. You are absolutely right about that. And while pre 90s models the high quality was obvious they also had their flaws too. I know, 965 was made in 90/91 but it is the end of quality production. Still have RS-B765 (just one model below 965 - no dbx, single capstan and no cd direct but everything else the same). Still working but control switches playing up (hard to get to them) some transistors and resistors overheating the circuit board changing the colour around them. Only one belt for door operating motor and still in good condition but had to replace a cracked transport sprocket. On the other hand Sony TC-K777 I paid a lot for it in those days and after just a couple of years so much problems with mechanism. No spares available as easy as today and no CZcams videos to show you at least disassembly or repair... Friend of mine bought a cheap Sony TC-FX422R in 1985 and after a few years of using it he stopped and left it in his rack for a couple of years (went overseas to work). When he came back deck wouldn't spin. When we opened the cover the capstan and counter belts turned into black goo. Very hard job to clean the pulleys to replace the belts. After replacement deck was fine but a couple of years later the auto reverse was playing up. I think Sony made some excellent decks but being overengineered prone to mechanical faults.
My most abused and longest lasting deck was Technics RS-M245X with the wired remote control. It had amorphous alloy heads (AX) head and while people discuss what type of head last longest, I am telling everyone, I never noticed degradation on this Technics AX head and it did quite a mileage. Recordings were quite good too compared to competition brands in the same price range. However a regular cleaning was performed too.
So when you compare (even with flaws) the old decks and the post 90s models you are right, most post 90s models are just a joke. For more advanced available technology after 90s, if they kept the quality and stopped cutting the cost in production, we would have a real masterpieces today and most of them would be fully operational with a minimal maintenance. Instead we have an old broken "newer" boxes packed with features which dont work and mostly with the crap audio handling...

@@beograd07 I never found technics decks with good mechanics/built to last, maybe the very old rs m95 wich definetly looks built up to a certain quality standard, but the others like RS-B765/965 simply have too much plastic
Microswitches are also indeed most likely to fail on technics decks for some reason.
Belts turning to goo is common on pretty much all brands, no deck bought secound-hand even if it "spins", it shoulndn't have wear put on it untill it s been overhauled properly (re oiled, re greased, re adjusted etc)

hello...we suppose that because of the less good factory quality, the less buttons and electronic gimmicks on the az-7 but what counts is the playback and recording quality, not the weight nor the price or the look...but I kind of prefer he RS- B965 because of the mass of buttons and the big display...well I got manipulated in the 80's and 90's and still am...but I begin to listen to others opinions out of concrete trieouts.
