I was In Australia at the time and I managed to get tickets for the finals the day before the final because no Aussies wanted to go see England v Pakistan at the MCG and they had loads of unsold tickets.

Anyway. VVS AGARKAR KUMBLE were clearly missed, for inconsistent Kaif Srinath (especially in Final) & Mongia respectively. Trusting SRINATH short length bowling was blunder in Final, likewise trusting Kaif Mongia most inconsistent batting was biggest blunder. Later, Ganguly repaired his mistake by taking VVS in, who was fairly good and proved his worth in AUS 2003/04 ODIs, so excluding VVS & AGARKAR KUMBLE was fatal mistake 👍

Actually Australia has always been a strong team. It's just that they became super strong in the 90s. Even if you see the first world cup final, it was Aus only against West Indies. And before that also Aus has been an elite team in test cricket also. So Aus overall has always been a strong team. Strong, stronger, strongest and never been a weak team. When talk about Rohit he has 7 wc hundreds ( most by any batsman in wc history ) and his average is 56 in wc tournaments and he has scored 1575 Wc runs.warner s wc stats also great. he has scored 6 centuries with excellent 56 average .But the reason I rate rohit higher than warner,he is a odi specials and he is the second best odi batsman in this era ( 31 odi centuries , 49 avg ,amazing 3 double centuries and 264 knock)

2003 and 2023 WC final loss to Australia - almost same pattern followed. Our best bowlers (Srinath, Zaheer, Nehra and Bumrah, Shami) who were terrific throughout the tournament, not delivering on that day. Our best batsmen (Sachin, Rohit) who were destructive throughout the tournament, not scoring big on that day.
For Australia- they were scratchy in league games in 2003 as well, almost lost to England and New Zealand, in 2023, nowhere near best with two losses..but brought on their A game on the big day.
Unless you bring best game on the day, you can’t win big games and tournaments. Australia is and will remain the best team for next many more decades.

In the whole world cup 2003, Australia struggled with their performance of batsmen; but when it mattered the most they just blasted the Indian bowling attack which was at their peak and the decision of bowling first was a very bad one.
Had Ganguly batted first; even the score of 280-290 was a very good total to defend because of pressure of chasing is very different than the setting the first innings total.
