In the rain scene, Doc was yelling " if I'm not white enough and not black enough then who am I ". Extremely good movie, it's right up there with another movie " The Pianist"
Also he says if he is not man enough
@John Xina depends on what u mean by "Asians", East Asians descendants that live in certain country in SEA have a very lovely time during 1998

What happened in 1998?
It’s movies like this that make me realize..politicians nor legislation came make us accept one another..it is our own individual responsibility for that change. If I can change..and you can change..we all can change
❤
Just sucks that the burden of trying to change someone’s mind is always on the backs of the oppressed. As a almost 30 yr old black man you get tired of trying to others to understand and respect you. I don’t blame anyone from any marginalized group for not wanting to deal with the pressure
This is very very true love thus comment ❤️
The truth is so fulfilling to read. Phillip, you seem to follow that angel on your shoulder that protects you from the devil words. People like you and comments like this have further reach than you could expect. We get so blinded by hate that we forget to open our eyes.
Nice Rocky line hahaha
I'm ashamed of some things I've said in my life. I've been angry on games, said some horrible things... I might have apologized to the men afterwards (who graciously accepted my apology, when I didn't deserve it) but that humiliation I brought upon myself still lingers. Racism really is hate. be better than that and be better than I was. I'm not ashamed to say that I'm better than I was before. There's always hope to do good and become a better person. We all breathe the same air and live. Don't be a dick.
Good movie btw!
We live and learn Ernest. The difference is....you learnt to be a better person.
Ernest You're alright in my book, just forgive yourself, we all make mistakes and no one is perfect. God bless you good buddy
@@jamesstraughter949 That makes me feel a lot better, thank you. God Bless you too brother

so you said the nword in COD lobbies?
I only started ugly crying at the end of this video when I found out this movie was based on a true story. How had I never heard this story before? In school (I'm in my mid 30s now) I was only taught about the horrors of segregation and the Jim Crow Laws, but there were never any hopeful or positive stories about how people on the opposite sides of a conflict can come together just by going through normal human experiences together. I'm not saying that the past should be forgotten, I'm saying that we aren't living in the past anymore and that to repair race relations (because the US is NOT a "post-racial" society like everyone likes to think) we should start highlighting the ways in which people on ALL sides have helped each other in the past. I feel that today's kids (who are the future) would benefit more from being shown HOW it's possible for people on different sides of a conflict to be good to each other instead of only showing them the reasons why everyone hated each other in the past.
Hello Karma
how are you doing today i hope everything is fine with you?
It's unfortunate, but certain people wish to maintain that hatred for selfish gain.
Knowing that there are folks like you who see the solution to end hatred brings hope to me. The future doesn't look as bleak as it seems.
Peace, harmony and understanding are not profitable for the devils that rule the world. Much love from a Italian/Brazilian lady from Brazil. BTW Brazil is the best country in the world. No segregation here. Anywhere you’ll see the diversity of human beings together. I was really shocked when I went to church with my black friend in England. That was a very big packed church and I was the only white person there.
You're so brainwashed and I'm not surprised 😂
" I'm saying that we aren't living in the past anymore..."
Yes, WE ARE...
I’m a middle aged white guy and I have tears in my eyes because of this true story
I’m a 31 year old black guy and have tears from this story. It’s amazing
i love hearing stories like that, gives me hope
☹️
According to the family, this story is not true. Just Hollywood BS.

Mr. Mortenson is astonishing in his ability to morph into every character he portrays. He was good in LOTR, he was good in Hildago, he was amazing in A History of Violence, he was very good in Green Book, he was heartbreaking in some post-apocalyptic film I forget the name of. Such a great, underappreciated actor. I wish he'd get his overdue recognition.
The Road
Eastern Promises also.
sir let me correct you.....he was GREAT as arragorn
a few Spanish language films, Danish Language films and a couple of French language films this guy can do it all.
The Road, Carlito's Way, and Albino Alligator
Everytime I hear stories like these it breaks my heart. I'm a 40 year old white man from London UK. I grew up with white, black, Asian, Jamaican, African all races of all walks. Many are my great friends for life! I have never ever seen them any different, never spoken to them any different. Racism is something that has been built into your brain by very ignorant and uneducated people. You are not born being racist! We are all as one. We are all soul's!
Nice comments. What would cement them into reality is the day you find yourself in a social situation where a White man is not on top. Not on top and even maligned with no recourse. When you are targeted, all you can do is minimize it and endure when it happens. To speak of it is just to open the door to being jeered and labeled a "victim".
Let enough Whites get targeted and trashed in this way, the emotional helplessness will finally open the eyes. Then someone like Trump won't be so able to use bigotry as his means to an end.
One of the best movie summaries I ever heard. Compacting the whole essence of the movie in 13 minutes. Outstanding.
You left out the part that the Doc was Gay and Tony had to rescue him when he was caught with another man in a steam room. So Tony not only overcame his racism but also his homophobia.
Facts
He skipped a lot of parts that help set up the movie.
"overcame his racism and homophobia" HAHAHAHAHA did you mean he knuckled under to leftist propaganda and ideologies??

funny its the opposite nowadays. Black people are more racist nowadays lol
The past can't be forgotten but cannot be dwelled on, the only hope to beat racism is love, even if you want to punch a racist in the mouth. A black man showed love to a kkk leader, the pinnacle of racism, leader of hate. Has been changed after he realised we are all the same.

It’s so sad how black people were treated in America, my wife is black and I am middle eastern, sometimes we still see how people steer at us and feel like un welcoming.
Hope the new generation build more diversity in this country, and history doesn’t repeat it self.

Middle east it's not better than America when it comes to how black people treated
What's sad is that you used the words "were treated".
What do you mean when you say were treated. For black men it's worse. If mostly black men smoked cigarettes they'd make it illega then lock up another million black men have them work $1.00 a day.only thing change is how they hide it
What's bad is that most black's today are very negative and don't have respect for anyone not even there own people.

The real Tony was actually in the sopranos in the first two seasons as the big boss that jimmy sacks answered to until he died and his son was gonna take over. I shouldn’t have to demonstrate my humanity to be considered human. That’s the bittersweet thing about the story.
No, you shouldn't have too but you do. The question is are you going to be like Dok

What a lovely movie & recap. Thank you for noticing and recapping this film.
That scene between Sidney Poitier and Rod Steiger eating together in the movie 'In the Heat of the Night' is one of the few times I've ever seen just 2 men talking together revealing their vulnerabilities to each other without looking at each other as black or white. Just 2 men acknowledging each other's loneliness. Movies like 'The Blind Side' etc. etc. all fail so miserably over 50 years later.

Incredible recap, now I’m gonna watch the movie, thanks for this.
You forgot two of my favorite bits:
(4:04) = Tony casually littering chicken bones and Doc following suit until he makes the driver pull over because Tony tossed a plastic cup.
“Pick it up” / “Oh come on the squirrels are gonna eat anyways” can be heard as they slowly backed up to the cup
Context:
Doc wandered off to get a drink in local pub and was getting harassed by a trio. Tony Lip gets there and tries to talk them out of it. They keep on until Doc’s Driver says “Listen assholes, do yourselves a favor and let ‘em go… NOW!” ending with a startling yell.
The biggest of the bunch tries to dominate him by pulling out a switchblade. Tony counters by seemingly holding a gun behind his back. There were in a standoff until the bartender who was a bystander in the situation pulls out a a sawed off shotgun who tells the guys to let him go. After that, Doc believed that Tony bluffed his way out.
(10:25 - 11:00) = When the protagonists entered, Tony realizes there was a pair of guys staring the moment Doc took out his wallet to pay for the food. After the show, Doc and Tony were walking out of the building, ready to walk onto the parking lot. Next, Tony’s instincts kicked in by pulling out his gun and firing two shots in the air. It turned out that the pair of guys were handing behind the longer than usual car, presumably for easy cash.
The best bit after that:
Tony - “Don’t ever flash your wad of cash in a bar”
Doc was drenched in sweat from recent exhilaration, shock and stood there for four seconds until he said “I knew you had a gun”
god this is the cutest thing ive ever seen i love good stories like these
even with this full of spoilers, i feel like i can still watch this and enjoy it
Incredible movie and awe inspiring true story! It must have been truly an eye opening and just heart wrenching experience for Tony to personally witness how cruelly one human being can be treated by another because of the color of their skin. Such a shame that this madness is still going on today.

You should watch "Loving" which is also based on true story. Interracial marriage was not legal in all the States until 1967. At 13, I recall looking at Life magazine and wondering why they couldn't just be left alone to be happy. I only knew that, like them, "my world" was always integrated. People don't realize that without certain laws, nothing would be different. Sad to say, some want to revert!

I don’t know why this makes me wanted to cry. Life is beautiful without all the hate in it. Racism is hate. There is no such thing as racism other than hate. Let’s love one another and treat others the same way we want others to treat us.
At the end, the same way you treat others, is the same way people around your circle going to treat you. Doesn’t matter your social class, your wealth or whatsoever. Who kills by the sword, die by the sword. What goes around comes back around. Let’s love and treat each other with same kindness, love and respect and we will see how beautiful things will turn out.

Hello I have watched this movie close to 50 times over and over and over replay replay replay. I still tear up ..wow.!
There are some situations you didn't mentioned, for example one of the last scenes where the cop stop them to help, in my mind this means that not every white people is like we expected to be, or the moment where the black field workers stare at him, due to the wealthy situation he has (but in reality he face the same problems as a black person as they do, or even worse). In my view, you have to see this kind of movie by yourself instead of see some recaps of them, because you can't just cut some moments out that contains emotions. But don't get me wrong, I still like the recaps. This kind of behavior against other culture will never end as long as humanity exists, the nature of humanity.

@@jblack8149 I know what you are saying about it being pure hatred. I am lucky that I have never lived through that type of hatred, so I will not tell you that I know what it is like.
