      Me too, no video ever mentions that. I haven't done much but I have to stand and let the legs relax before I can paddle. Hoping it goes with practice and its just an unnatural position for my ageing legs. Its not fear of the water, I kayak a lot and am happy rolling. At least it gives the others a laugh

Did a whole 2 and a half hour paddle down the local river and only fell in once. My son was so amazed and pissed at the same time. 🤣🤣 Earned some serious “dads cool” points. So many thanks. 👍👍👍

      Hmm! I get the feeling that I may have to fall in the drink - at least one time. I think that there's a knack to it. I'll find out if there is a way to stand up on these SUP paddle boards. And I think that I know where to go on the River Avon at least. I saw a hire place just outside of Bath. On the A4 turnoff and close to the Park and Ride there.

    Very nice video. You nailed it! For me it worked to know those 3 tips: look straight when standing, bend your knees and move the paddle into the water as quick as possible as it gives you 3rd point of contact on the SUP. I started to paddle after 15 minutes, in my 2nd attempt in the water with SUP. This video is very helpful!

      Age/youth definitely has a factor in it. I learned and have become quiet good and still have never fell in the water, however it may have been wise to just take a swim the couple times i lost my balance i just let myself drop straight to my butt, surely that was worse for my body than just falling in the water lol. But its a great hobby, I absolutely love paddling and fishing from my board, i moved recently and am now living on a lake and so i wanted to find a water hobby other than fishing, and im so thankful i found this

  • @stephenfarthing3819

    Right! Now there's been a development. And I think that I have made quite a forward step. I attempted to stand up on the board twice today on August 1st and I followed the technique to stand up on the board. Putting the paddle crossways in front of me, putting both feet next to the centre handle about 8 inches from it . And then steadily rising - for 4 seconds I was up. Except when I got the wobbles again. That was the first of two attempts and the most successful of the two. I also tried it downwind. And realized that was what had to be done. As well. I attempted it a further time and stood up for 2 seconds. I'm gradually getting there.
    I also realized something else! Ultimately I am going to have to take a accidental or intentional plunge into the water. I am going to have another go in two weeks time and this time I will do so and practice getting back onto the board. This I will have to do. 🤔
    Also. If sopping wet, I won't mind as much of taking the plunge as a result of attempting to stand up on the paddle board. I came very close to achieving the goal of this. So I will take a hour on the paddle board. On the 15th of this month. And if I take the inelegant plunge into the water on this. Then - so be it! To stand up on the paddle board for just a few seconds, is quite a big step. I just have to accept the fact that I will be taking that headfirst into the water. It will happen!!😐

    First time, I went to my local bay. There were small waves and a slight breeze, but I tried it anyway. I didn't get up, but I had a good time. Too bad it's the end of the season, I don't really want to get a wet suit. I'm a little scared to try it on nearby lakes, as they're freshwater and I never know if there's brain eating amoebas in there. But once I get my sea legs I'll maybe feel more confident

      And Beau ! My preparation continues. Just got a pair of wetsuit boots and I have been reviewing the weather.. Which is an improving picture. Weather conditions for Today through to Saturday morning is looking even. Chances are good that I could be paddle boarding on Saturday morning. Better than 70% at the moment and climbing up. The only thing that could scupper things could be the River Avon itself. We will have to wait and see if it does. I'm still on and absolutely looking forward to it. I also plan to have a dinner at the Happy Sailor pub at Saltford on the day, afterwards. So I will make sure that I can do so.. Because, well!!! I turn 60 on this day.. Well, there has been a development.. you would probably say that 10% standing on the board would be a achievement! What would you say of 20% ? Standing up on the board for 20 seconds ? I topped my previous effort by 11 seconds. That's something of an achievement. To stand up on it - for 11 seconds longer than before is quite frankly a large improvement. Well, getting there is the result of it. And well? It came with four topples into the water on the River Avon. However, I was correct on the breeze problem. I suppose that is one of the consequences as well. Four of them. Ah well. There t'is!

      Hi - back again! Part of my own plan has succeeded in getting more equipment for paddle boarding. I obtained a personal floatation device and have tried it on. I have known that it requires to be as tight as possible. And I think that I have done so. My upper body feels compressed but I tend to think that it's necessary for safety sake and reasons!
      I was hoping to go paddle boarding on the 27th of this month. Unfortunately, I couldn't reach Clevedon by 4 pm ! I will make an attempt at it. On the 29th of this month. I'm going to take all possible equipment for that. On this day in May ,!

  • @stephenfarthing3819
    @stephenfarthing3819 Před 2 lety

    Good point that! I tried that a few times over the last couple of weeks. And came closest on the last try. Even so. I almost lost balance and ultimately went back to knees. I mean to have another go in 12 days time. And this time I will stand up on the paddle board. And perhaps even try out on either the River Avon beyond Bath or the River Wye.
    Going barefoot on it. Yep I think that I will. I have surf shoes but I think that carrying them with you and not on your feet. Is perhaps the best way.
    I am noting the technique and I almost did so. On Sunday 17th July. At Clevedon Marine Lake in North Somerset. I will employ the strategy. I have studied closely through You Tube sites.
    This time I shall do so! By mid August. I will do so.

    I'm 81 and just tried it last week. I use a surf ski and sea kayak but still had the legs shaking and the wobbles. I find it hard to go from my knees as I am not so flexible these days. I did one dive to the front, then fell sideways, and then did the comic standing and running the board at 90 miles per hour forwards under my feet and crashed on my back. One tip I would recommend is that you don't do it in shallow water as you can hit the bottom, so get some depth under you. I did wear my pdf.

    Right. Today on the 15th August - I made some further progress with standing up on the paddle board. And although not in this part - I also deliberately tipped myself off the paddle board and made a very successful attempt of reboarding the paddle board. That was something I meant to do. On that day. And so did it.
    Since it is a Marine lake at Clevedon. The recommendation is to wear surf shoes, when feet are on the bottom of the lake. This is partly because of crabs taking a very great protest against bare feet by nipping at the toes. Beau, I think that you'll be howling with laughter at it. Because it could well have happened to you.
    I did have a second achievement on this. You can recall that I stood up on a paddle board for just 4 seconds, two weeks prior. Well! I did 56% better with standing up for 8.912 seconds. Quite a bit of a improvement. I think that you'll agree. And that achievement of the 15th August. Is a very considerable one.

    best way to practice standing up on a paddle board without a paddle board is to use a piece of plywood on top a log, try balancing on that, when you're good at it, then you can spend good money for a paddle board.

    Another thing. I might just jump in the water before having another go. I hope that things will be improving by the 27th of this month. I have already done the reboarding technique so I do know how to do that! My main objective this time will be Knightstone Marine lake at Weston Super Mare. A bit longer for a few pounds more. 50 minutes in fact. And next spring on my Birthday month. I might even take out a longer period of time on one of the rivers of the West Country area. Right. Now then. I have heard that Weston Super Mare might be under a cloud of complications and difficulty. I will have to take a recon run to there. Tomorrow morning of the 23rd. I have a uncomfortable feeling that there's a huge hiatus about to happen on Saturday. I hope not - however! The problem in being is that whilst Weston Super Mare might be out of the question - Clevedon is likely to be packed out. Thus reduced space to manueovre. This makes any recon run absolutely necessary and vital. I will keep you posted on this matter. I could be hitting the brakes prematurely. I hope, obviously, for a different outcome.

    • @stephenfarthing3819
      @stephenfarthing3819 Před 2 lety

      Right ? Now then! Update number 6 of the paddle boarding saga.
      First off. This time. I went to Weston Super Mare for 50 minutes and although four attempts were made to stand up on the board I didn't stay up longer than 9 seconds. In fact the best one was the first one at 8 seconds. I had the problem with wind - of the natural weather kind - and an offshore breeze where Knightstone Marine lake is - played havoc with that - until after I had figured out where it was coming from. The geographical topography of the hills around that part of Weston Super Mare. It didn't stop me trying 3 more times. And standing foot flat on the board. And yep that's a further minor achievement. The three other times were 6 seconds, and two 5 second one. But I did come very close to standing upright on the paddle board.
      I shifted to WSM - as it is generally known - for the purpose of more manueovring space. I found out the second of three means of turning the paddle board. And it had some advantages over my own discovered means of doing so. And yes. I'm still partly dreading the step back turns - I also had a floatation jacket on and the leash was secured to it. I still prefer the leash secured to the ankle, I believe that it is a choice of preference. I found it a little bit distracting where it was attached. Oh well I adapted to it. Never mind!
      I am intending one final time to this. Again at Weston Super Mare, to go paddle boarding on the 10th September. I did say that this one on this date 27/8/2022 would be the last. I will be keeping a close and better watch on the weather reports. And hopefully it'll be a little less breezy from offshore. And perhaps leave it until after 12 pm. When hopefully it'll be a little bit less so than in the morning from 9am.
      I've decided to try and strengthen my sense of balance in Bristol on the 3rd of September. There's a Rollerskating rink in the centre of the city and I will attempt to do so, with the intention of improving the situation of balance on that day. By giving that a go. Hopefully this should translate into a successful standing on a paddle board on the 10th of the month.
      I figure that trying to move on 8 wheels is similar to the situation of the situation of balance on a paddle board. It should be able to put that into practice.. Equally so! And perhaps improve the sense of balance, that way. I've said before of this as a part solution. I can only hope that this will prevail.

    • @stephenfarthing3819
      @stephenfarthing3819 Před rokem

      Right - final update time ! I am shortly to be off to Saltford and The Jolly Sailor pub for my first paddle board for this year. And well ? Today is the 13th of the month. The day I turn 60 - no barrier to paddle boarding at all!
      There was a little bit of a fear that it would not have gone ahead! But to all intents and purposes. It is going ahead. I've built up an equipment stock and am as ready as I can be.. The weather of the last couple of weeks were nerve wracking. Fortunately though - the main effects of that was in South West Somerset and Devon ! I will let you know how things go - today. Just reviewed a few things with your site Reuben! And updated as much as possible. If it's remarkably pleasant.. Then I will go barefoot on the board. It's looking reasonably good. We will see what happens next.

  • @stephenfarthing3819
    @stephenfarthing3819 Před 2 lety

    Further updates on the paddle boarding front. I have heard that Wessex Water has called on people not to go swimming in the water on the coastline of North Somerset. I'm fairly certain that has nothing to do with the Marine Lakes at either Clevedon or Weston Super Mare. But nonetheless it has opened up new concerns that could interfere with my continued efforts on learning more about paddle boarding. This is quite frankly perterbing.
    I will continue to monitor the weather reports and hope that this situation will be resolved in the same way as it was with Clevedon Marine lake. I am particularly hoping to go to the Marine Lake at Knightstone Island at Weston Super Mare on the 26th of this month - I do understand that these conditions were due to the extremely heavy rainfall, we've had in the last few days. I hope that it doesn't deflect my intention of this. Hopefully, a matter of 10 days should render the problem muted.

    I've noticed something here. And perhaps that's key - pace and getting balance. I think that Rollerskating might be a partial answer. Encourages balance doesn't it? Skateboard is something that you have suggested. When the winter months come on - then a few times of that might improve confidence and balance. I'm not a skateboard enthusiast. I might look at this a bit. Hmm!

    • @SUPboardermag
      @SUPboardermag  Před 2 lety

      Great idea Stephen. Anything that gets you moving and using your balance will help.

    • @stephenfarthing3819
      @stephenfarthing3819 Před 2 lety

      Right - now then! The similarities between paddle boarding and Rollerskating or blading are one and the same. And there's getting up onto your feet which is - exactly - the same difficulty as with paddle boarding. I've managed to get up on my feet in Rollerskates and in somewhat the same manner and way as standing up on the board. It's to concentrate on getting feet into the right position and slightly apart by about 6 to 8 inches with the knees slightly bent. By this - you distribute your weight and hold balance. You also focus dead ahead. And once upright, you slowly balance yourself. Knees bent slightly forward and you keep both feet moving in a pattern. However that is as far as similarities between the two go! The trick is to apply standing up on the paddle board in almost the same way as with Rollerskating. The only difference is that you don't have four wheels on each foot that can land you on your backside on shore. The technique of paddling with the paddle and maintain momentum as standing up on the board is also the other side of the solution. But getting up onto your feet is exactly the same difficulty. A common factor.
      I have noticed that in an attempt of Rollerskating for the first time in 4 decades. And I am sure that someone like Beau for instance, is likely to confirm that. In contrast and connection with paddle boarding.
      I did say that I will figure out how to build confidence in paddle boarding. The last time for me to crack the 9 seconds barrier will be on the 10th of this month. I'm not sure if it will be. But with several attempts over the last month - I have gradually getting closer to standing up on the board for longer than 9 seconds. I have this one final chance of doing so. I will crack it. Even if I fall in backwards afterwards! Oh well! Roll on September 10th. At Knightstone Marine lake at Weston Super Mare.

    Hi! I have the intention of buying a paddle board, but I would also like to use it as a kayak. Is that possible? Has anybody tried? Your advices would be highly appreciated.

    Can you suggest any tips for someone with an ankle mobility issue to get back on the board? I can't kick hard enough with my one good foot to get myself back on my board. Dislocated my ankle last year and it's still not there yet. Haven't worked out how to stand up yet either. Practicing on the floor to try and stand up in a straight line at the moment. Been using my board mostly as a sit down board right now.

    Just an observation. I suppose that you shouldn't jump for joy on a paddle board on achieving a minute standing up on it - or more.. Because the net result will be one almighty splash by the consequence of the doing so! So there's some wisdom of keeping your celebration muted and only deliberately doing so. In that celebration when justified to do so! I've gone on hold for now. But roll on Spring next year - and I will still make the attempt. To stay up longer than 9 seconds. I suspect that I might have caused some amusement to that end!

      Hehe Stephen. It's always worth celebrating! But yes, we all know what follows a jump for joy on a paddleboard. If you have any request for content, please do let us know so you can get your fix over winter. Thanks, Beau

    Just try to stand up. Dont paddel right away, you cannot do That when you are a beginner. That is too hard.

    • @SUPboardermag
      @SUPboardermag  Před 2 lety

      It might seem hard, but it is needed for balance. Best tip - jump off your board into the water a few times so you aren't afraid of falling in.

    I actually just have a good question to ask. And if someone could give me an answer to it. Would it be possible to wear foldable Wet weather boots on a paddle board? I do tend to believe that it is preferable to wear no surf shoes or boots of this kind on a paddle board! For example, I wore surf shoes about three weeks ago for the purpose of learning to get back onto the paddle board. I've got Pokeboo foldable Wet weather boots but I am concerned of the soles of these boots. On the basis that it may be possible to slip off the board. I would however, welcome some confirmation of this! If possible to do so!

    • @SUPboardermag
      @SUPboardermag  Před rokem

      YES . I can say yes with confidence because Donna one of our testers uses these boots all the time paddleboard and she says how great they are. Just be careful on sharp rocky shores but they are excellent on the board great idea. Thanks Reuben

      @@gretchenschaumann1808 I was taught to always kneel until in deeper water and the instructor shouted at us to kneel as we came back to shore. Good advice if the edge of the lake is rocky or a man made hard edge.

      It will be slightly too small for your first time on the water. Try at least 10ft, but 10'6 or 11ft is better for balance. Thanks, Beau

      Standing in the ocean is much harder than on a calm river or lake. Any little bump on the water surface messes with out balance and it's a lot harder to stand. We have another video similar to this coming out soon, so keep an eye out for it! Thanks, Beau

    This woman looks like she is in a race. There is no need to lunge you body forward like that unless you are in a race or have little upper body strength

    • @SUPboardermag
      @SUPboardermag  Před 3 lety

      Hey RC. I see it may look like that but by bending at the hips and leaning further forward you can initiate your core and use more of your body to paddle. Also this is the first step to being able to paddle with a bit more power.
      But yes, if you want to stand up straight and just paddle with your arms this can also work too. But it's not great technique to progress with. Whatever works as long as you're getting out on the water :-) Thanks Reuben
