So sick of Howard Cosell. I always got the impression that Ali just enjoyed being in the ring and that he got tremendous workouts by going the distance with fighters who weren't in his league. I would have loved to have seen Cosell take a few of Ali's jabs.
Watching this fight again reminds me of just how much most everyone wanted to see Howard knocked out. He was one of those guys with a mouth that obliterated his vision every time he opened. For example: There are several points in this fight where Ali had thrown the right just moments before Cosell drones on about Ali not having thrown a single right hand. He missed it because his mouth had been running when it was thrown. But, I have to say this, Howard served to heighten the Ali mystique. There was always lots of controversy. Ali, Cosell. Many decisions. Lots and lots of controversy. Some things people are still arguing over. Lots of controversy. The one thing seldom disagreed upon thought, was that Ali should have knocked out Cosell. Cosell was a shit announcer. Dude literally would be talking about how awesome a fighter was while the guy was getting his ass kicked, and how lousy a fighter was while the guy was putting on a clinic. Made me wonder if he even watched the fights, half the time.
Cosell was indeed a man who fed off his own vocalizations. He ran his mouth way too much and missed the real action. He only knew boxing just enough to sound like he was an expert. Lubbers actually got in some nice overhand shots with both hands that snapped Alis head back and Cosell made no mention of it at all. POS announcer. If you want to hear a real pro call a fight just listen to Don Dunphy.
I agree completely. The fact that Cosell insisted on calling boxing matches by himself speaks volumes. He wanted the air entirely to himself - he hated sharing the spotlight with anyone else (which is why his tenure on Monday Night Football was so troubled). His technical understanding of boxing was extremely limited, and with his insistence on making himself, rather than the action, the center of the viewer's attention, the result was that the viewer was entirely on their own in terms of insight into what is happening in the ring. Cosell wasn't even good at simple blow-by-blow - just describing the action - which is the bare minimum that an announcer should be capable of.

I see many comments about Ali playing with the poor guy but remember Ali broke his right indexfinger against Norton so that can be one reason he's mostly using the left
This fight was funny. Ali knew He had this guy and wasn't trying hard to win..this was hilarious...Ali could have ''won the fight a long time ago if he wanted too.
You wouldn’t think that this fight would be in black & white in 1973 and poor quality at that. This was the sequence of fights Ali had between 1073 and 1974- KEN NORTON, (won) RUDI LUBBERS (won) JOE FRAZIER (won) GEORGE FOREMAN (won) and that was just in ONE YEAR of 14 years at world title level. ALI WON 22 WORLD TITLE FIGHTS, made 19 successful defences. 61 fights. Tyson Fury 6 title fights, won 5 and 3 defences, 31 fights yet fury now says he’s the greatest of all time? LOL 🤣
It was an impressive win for Ali because he was a gentleman throughout the fight for giving the fans their money's worth. The cat could have sunk its teeth into the mouse at any time during that fight
I could be wrong but might this have been where Ali learned how to implement his famous rope-a-dope tactic. It seems that Lubbers at times did that to Ali, making him miss wildly with his punches. Perhaps even the great Ali learned a little something here. Lubbers even exposed his face making Ali miss a few times. Ali mentioned later on that he had great respect for the way Lubbers fought him so you never know.

distance for the endurance test. This fight was never a fight or ever had the hopes of being fight.
the cat and the mouse !!!!greatist ever!!!!
Exelente, exelente de el mejor Ali Eddie de Vzla. La Guaira 🎉
IT's a cat, playing with his mouse. My dad hated him, because of his mouth, but I Loved him, because to me, in 63, I just knew, He really was the Greatest of all time.
sting like a bee float like a butterfly
Horrible announcing, what is he talking about during the fight?
They were not able to broadcast this fight in color in 1973?
Picture quality looks like it is from 1943 not 1973.
Crazy how lightly he's hitting in the 12th
I can't believe he let this little dude off the hook.
I see many comments about Ali playing with the poor guy but remember Ali broke his right indexfinger against Norton so that can be one reason he's mostly using the left
Greatest fighter of all time ✍️
This fight was funny. Ali knew He had this guy and wasn't trying hard to win..this was hilarious...Ali could have ''won the fight a long time ago if he wanted too.
Think Ali gv other ring leaders champs around the world to step in ring with him. Great sport
Every time lubbers thought about throwing a punch he got hit by left jab.
LOL 🤣
Lubbers kicked arse! Great match!!
A little light exercise for Ali. A walk in the park.
I think you're wrong. Ali was doing that long before this fight.
@@Demonizer5134 In which fight? Name the round?
@@anthonyspina5723 He was already doing it in his first match against Frazier
@@Demonizer5134 Which round ?
@@anthonyspina5723 Several rounds bro. I'm positive. I've watched it probably 8 times. Just watch the whole fight. I think it starts in round 7 if I'm not mistaken but you really should just watch it for yourself.

Vayaaaa ke rival mas raro pero al final complicado pero ali siempre rapido elegante i astuto el mas grande
The late great Howard Cosell on the mic!
I love Howard Cosell.
Sez you. I thought Cosell sucked. But, to each their own.....
@@milojanis4901 lol...why?
he was intelligent....good theater...sure he yapped a lot...but he told the truth...why do you types of people form opinions about people you have never met..never will...and have no ideas what they are like other than their public persona...which is far different from their real self.....how many times have people you liked.....turned out to be abusers of women..as an example?
He did suck. Couldn't announce for shit. If he didn't have Ali's coat tails to hang on to he would have continued to be a nobody. Was in love with his own voice.
Ali get his good looks from his mother

Rudi Lubbers was brave enough to enter the ring with that legend. Ali was brave and kind enough to let him touch him when he was in the corner.
Aku baru tau kalo Ali pernah bertanding di Indonesia.
Sam wkkkkk
A game little pug! Good work out for Ali. I was only 8 at the time of this fight, but now i can see why my father would always yell at the tv " shut up Cosell!".
Indonesia 🇲🇨🇲🇨🇲🇨
i don't even remember this one. maybe the time zone difference kept it from the back page of the NY daily news.
If Rudi Lubbers threw more a little more one-two combination punches he would have survived.
I read some of the comments on here he not the greatest he's carrying a bum for 12 rounds! well boys and girls let me tell you something. I'm 80 years old the greatest was a Showman and you can bet your sweet ass if Muhammad Ali had to be anybody in his day he could have done it! the bottom line he is the greatest!!!! Everybody wanted to see this man for one rounds or 12 rounds whoever he fought
Well Ron. Fully Agreed.
Shit, never thought that he'd be fighting in my country....
Ali dua kali ke Jakarta. Tahun 1973 dan 1994
Looks like Ali feels sorry for his opponent!
My god ... I had forgotten just what a contemptible man Howard Cosell was. Why did he agree to this voice over when he makes it plain he is not interested in the fight?

When someone complains about Fight Night Round 4 knockout animation where a boxer walks backwards into the ropes and falls down.....i show them this!
My bad that was the Ali vs Jurgen Blin fight.
