- It's been on the lens roadmap for a while, but the Nikkor Z 180-600mm f/5.6-6.3 VR and 70-180mm f/2.8 have been officially announced! We were able to spend some time shooting wildlife with these new lenses and have some initial impressions!

Thank you PetaPixel for giving Chris and Jordan a platform. They are the most infotaining couple on the photography beat.
Never watched petapixel but i do now since Chris and Jordan is there.
More like an old, married couple!
Nikon is killing it lately! I’m just waiting for that 35 f/1.2
Tamron doesn't have 35/1.2 😅
@@USGrant21st Nikon uses Tamron lenses as cheaper non-S lenses .. and the 35 1.2 will be a top of the line lens
@@numbnuts2133 lol, that's quite a statement from an ignorant person 😅
@@USGrant21st they didn't have a 600 f/4 with a built in TC so nikon made one ;)
Pretty much confirmed at this point by nikon rumors. Looks like Nikon will then have the most extensive lineup of first party 1.2 primes in the world
WOW that transition from focus to defocus is really really really impressive 😮😮😮
Nice vid!
Im really enjoying these videos guys, im not even a nikon shooter but its always interesting to see your view on it. been following for some time, in the changes from channel to channel and I have to say, really trust your input on lenses and cameras! I'd love to see more fujifilm stuff, even if its third party alternatives for the system, which have been growing lately. keep it up team!
Petastical 😭
better than petaphile
Nikon is roaring back on the scene...good for them...
You're getting back into your flow with this video, after you moved house and obviously had some adjustment time. Great! This is the Jordan and Chris review we love to watch, even if we shoot another brand.
Always a pleasure to see you guys!
the 200-500 is still my ride or die so i needed a lens like this to finally convince me to push to mirrorless. Nikon is killing it with these two lenses. Take my money.
czcams.com/video/iM1C3IVu1d4/video.html
This is definitely on my radar. With internal focus and 70% turn on the wirst to get from 180 to 600 is the selling point for me. I get this and with the 70-200 which I already have, then I got my wildlife area covered. What I like to to test how it behaves if I were to attach a 2xtc? Looking at sample images from those who had this, tells me that this 180-600 is sharp. In broad daylight, you're shooting f8 or f11 mostly anyway...
Good to see the price price point for both lenses are indeed for the masses. A much needed option. I say both lenses are pretty good.
It would be interesting to compare a setup with that Nikon 180-600 vs a Sony setup with the 200-600 for wildlife of course 👌🏻
This might be what stops me from going from my D500 to Sony if this lens beats out Sony's 200-600mm
czcams.com/video/iM1C3IVu1d4/video.html
I’ve been waiting for this lens to swap out my Sony a9 and 200-600mm to either the z8 or z9. Can’t wait to see some comparisons.
A very interesting and must have comparison. But one thing to take into consideration is that the Sony lens is already 3 years old. I new version is coming soon ? Lighter, smaller and faster autofocus with the XD Linear motors ?
@@rodrigomartin-hidalgo1592 seems pretty unlikely. 3 years is nothing for a lens. The Nikon 200-500 is still being sold and it came out in 2015!
Nikon is really impressing lately. Chris and Jordan are excellent as usual.
Looks good, interested in both lenses so will look forward to production version tests.
I remember the olden days when people said "Nikon Z cameras are good but there are no longer lenses" Now I don't know which one to buy next.
Chris has made me spit beer on my son twice now with his intros
Thanks so much for sharing another wonderful video like always 👌👍
Shoot. I have the 70-200 2.8S, simply a great lens. But that size comparison to the 70-180 2.8 is pretty darn impressive. My wife bought me the 24-120 f/4 and now I barely use my 24-70 2.8. That 70-180 is probably going in the bag when it comes out, especially for travel.
I’ve watched several of the reviews of this lens, fellows, and, as usual you guys nailed it. Simply the best review, thorough, succinct and amusing. I’ll be watching for the end of the world in 2140.
Another amazing lens from Nikkor!
I have a feeling Nikon 35-150 is coming soon.
Great review. Thank you.
I love the deer looking over its shoulder and sticking out its tongue 😂❤
Love that jazzy background music early in the video. Appreciate the early look.
Ordered!
Interesting lenses - and great fact about damsel/dragonflies, didn't know that about their wings
Those duck photos too turned out very well
Looks really good. The zoom range n price point. A winner for Nikon.
That 70-180 is a fantastic addition especially as it takes teleconvertors.
Love this ❤❤ Ordered one today. Delivery is said to be August .
I learned about damselflies 🙂 had no idea. Thankyou
Great review! Deer at 5:20 lol. Great bokeh.
I can't describe how excited I am for that 180-600mm lens oh my GOD, finally.
Love it ❤
Great video thank you.
I am just transitioning (back) to Nikon due almost entirely to the Z8. I have the 24-120mm lens to begin with and was planning on going with the 100-400 as my telephoto zoom. (I am just someone who enjoys photography as a hobby, I am not a pro.)
At one time, I was shooting a Sony A7iii with the 200-600, but I found that it was too big of a lens to carry around "just in case" I might need a long lens and I switched to the A7Riii & the Sony 100-400GM thinking that if I need to get in closer, I could crop and still end up with an image with a similar resolution to what I would get with my A7iii & the 200-600 but with a lot less weight and bulk.
My question is this, how would you compare this lens to the Nikon 100-400? Would the extra reach be offset by the additional weight? IMHO, (and everyone will be different), having the extra reach is of little value if I tend to leave the lens in the car because I don't want to carry it with me "in case" I see something.
Thanks.
3:55 😂😂😂
I love watching your videos.
was initially thinking how awesome the 200-500mm prices (especially used) will be now, but after seeing how OOF transition looks... i'm buying this !
That 70-180mm would be great paired with either the 24-120f4 or 24-70 f4 for a small do everything travel lens kit.
Sad to see DP Review fade away but I gotta tell ya, this YT version is a lot better in so many ways, for starters, it's great to have the personal aspect and human interface. Great job keeping an informative tradition alive all the while making it better (in my humble opinion anyway... :).
DPReview has been reacquired so it's here to stay.
But the uncertainty caused them to lose an very valueable 2 man team.
That damselfly looks like a Coenagrion puella to me. Nice to see you have same species as in Europe. The dragonfly is a Libellula quadrimaculata (to the four spots on each of it’s wings) for sure.
I’d be interested in how this lens performs with extension tubes to shorten the focal distance. Would be amazing to get it down to 3 feet!
The 180-600 is indeed a very good lens, and despite what some reviews will tell you, it works very well with the
2 x TC. My 200-500 is now back in it's box and consigned to the loft with my other F mount lenses.
I bought this lens, it's fantastic. Perfect for the kind of photos and videos I take and make.
This looks like an amazing option for Nikon wildlife photographers on a budget, I wish Canon would offer something similar...
I agree, except that Canon has lots more budget friendly cameras (R7, R8, Etc.) with great AF. Nikon is behind when comes to friendly budget camera with great AF.
Just what I was thinking. I'm kind of locked into Canon at this point, but if I was starting from scratch, I'd seriously be considering Nikon.
This and the 20 mm 1.8 will do my needs perfectly.
I'll be really curious to see AF speed of this lens versus the 100-400 as that's something super important to me when birding and photographing fighter jets...
The focal range of the 70-180 would be nice to see and many 70-200 are not 200mm at close focus, headshot distance.
Good job that Nikon have got you product to review
The original Tamron 70-180 has 0.5x close focus, but only with manual focusing. It's probably the same with Nikon version.
@@USGrant21st @180mm?
@@logtothebase2@70mm
Many 70-180 @180 are not 180 at close distances…
@@pawelmod3292 Do you meen 70-200 2.8's? i'm not aware of any other 70-180 2.8s? if so I agree, thats why am wondering how this focuses at the long end , for say head and shoulder shots.
Very nice
Wikipedia about medium format camera brand "Bronica": "In 1959, Nippon Kogaku sold Nikkor lenses to Shinkodo (Bronica Corporation, current Tamron Corporation) which made for Zenza Bronica medium-format SLR cameras."
So the history of Nikon as design supplier to Zenza Bronica, now called Tamron, is age old.
tamron 70-180 looks great
its nikon! i swear!
@@MrNoipe Nikon Branded version of tamron a056, maybe optimized for AF at closest distance. And TC-1.4x/2.0x compatible
It's Tamron, all right. Had Nikon allowed Tamron to change the mount themselves, it would have been $150 cheaper.
These DO look like re branded tAMRON...
If Nikon "made" a 17-70mm f/2.8 for APS-C and Canon R7 equivalent camera body that 70-180 & 180-600 would make a killer three lens combo for APS-C.
A z50 with ibis and full sensor readout at 60p would be nice
24mp is nice but the 12mp a7s3 showed that sometimes high iso capability is needed
And add a focus joystick too
thx for the video but how would you say it compares to the NIKKOR Z 70-200mm f/2.8 VR S with 2x converter on Z8 in DX crop as then you'd have a 210-600 f5.6...thx
What, the Nikkor version of the 70-180 will take TCs?! I'm jealous now.
Thats one serious lens 😮
Great products from Nikon. Thank you, Chris !
I noticed with my externally zooming Tamron 150-500mm, that birds quite often fly away when I zoom out quickly. I mean, you're still rotating your hand, but I think the overall shape of the lens not changing is also going to be an advantage in some situations.
Yes!! Finally...
Nikon is soooo aggressively competing these days.. Omg is lebs is so cheaper, I'm definitely going to buy this lens❤❤❤❤❤
How do you think it will compare against the z400 4.5 with 1.4 TC? Of course can't beat the zoom capability
Excellent intro to this awesome 180-600 lens, Chris! 2 questions please...At f/8, can you really see a major difference in sharpness between it and the Nikkor Z 100-400 S? And, who sells an Arca-Swiss compatible foot plate? (I still can't understand why Nikon's telephoto collars/feet are not Arca-Swiss compatible?! Doesn't every serious photographer use Arca-Swiss compatible gear, i.e., ball heads, pan-tilt, gimbal, etc.?) Thank you sir.
Will it go with Nikon z6 II ? I don't want to upgrade camera.
I love the Bow River too, almost got killed by a bull Elk in matting season once tho, so be careful up there guys.
Those bull elks are especially aggressive during "matting season"! 🙂
Sir, love the review. And reviews like this really make me want this lens even more. I just wanted to suggest at @4:00 it is wrong to say this lens has “macro capabilities”…. It just has “close up ability”. 1:4 is FAR from “macro”.
Macro is 1:1 or better. Example of better, 2:1, 3:1, 4:1, and etc…. Then you get off in to “micro” (super macro and better).
Consider explaining this lens has a very very nice minimum focal distance for something at 600mm allowing you to get decently close. But again, not at all Macro.
Sorry to be triggered. Love your work!
What is going on with the micro jitters/background focus breathing in the video, really noticable when your next to those trees? Does it have something to do with the lens on whatever camera your using to record video, or the camera itself?
When you look at the the retail of the Tamron 70-180, the Nikon version is only $50 more full retail. Lets say it is Tamron built, there is a benefit of making sure firmware is designed properly to the Nikon system over it being 3rd party. I wonder if there is any difference with lens coating. Even if the profit margin for Nikon is lower, it will be low R&D cost for Nikon also but a nice low entry cost into the system for the consumer and possibly a loyal customer. Not a bad deal for everyone.
"This episode was shot on the Nikon Z8" - it would be great Jordan, if you make an episode comparing the S5 IIx and Z8 in terms of video shooting. Both cameras are great, but they are so different that it's difficult to figure out which one suits better. You have experience with both of them, give us your judgment!
Both lenses appear to be sharp. The new Nikon 70-180mm lens looks actually like the Tamron but the exterior is finished to a higher degree.
It looks like Tamron because it is rehoused Tamron.
Tamron is OEM for a handful of non S-line Z mount lenses
There was a 70 - 180mm Micro zoom lens, long days before, i own 2 of them ;-))
For underwater great!
I dont even earn money as a photographer and I'm fully prepared to buy this telephoto. Ive been waiting for too long!!!
Off topic but what shoulder bag are you carrying? On topic, thanks for the peak. This lens is going on my preorder list today.
Since it takes the TC's, wouldn't it have to be a different design than the Tamron version? I don't mean mount, but room in the rear for the TC to fit.
This Nikon 70-180mm with Nikon coatings might perform a bit better than Tamron one, presented chart looks great + it accepts TC! (and have 140-360mm f/5.6). I would take it for weddings over 70-200/2.8 S any time - the size!!!
Quick one PP - how does the weight and hand ability and optic quality of this lens compare against the Nikon 200-500 F5.6 AFS VR ?
Looks like a winner for Nikon. Side question, anyone know what bag Chris has during this video?
Can we use all type of shutter speeds, like slow fast, when vibration reduction is on of the lens, any restriction technically
And it is almost half of what Canon users have to come up with for the 100-500 which is 100mm less.
Yep I'm jealous over here in Canon land.
Meanwhile Sony users can get the Tamron 150-500 with linear focus motors for under a grand...
@@youknowwho9247 Yeah, well at least there have been rumors that Sigma is now producing AF lenses for RF.
funny on the damsel and dragonfly comment. Loved it. LOL
Thank you!! What do you think about Performance compaired with 4.5/400. ?Yours Peter
Thanks, you guys. Dang, I think I want too many Nikon things. Starting with that Z8, then this lens and several other lenses. But I still have the D850, D750, and a bunch of their lenses…😬
I hope the full review will contain a proper comparison with the 200-500! I use that one right now and I'm happy with it but the 180-600 could be a fun upgrade in the future :)
Me too! I’m a happy long-time user of the 200-500 as well. I have shot tons hand-held with it and the only hope I have is that this new one can do better in the area of af-speed, zoom-throw and a shorter close range distance. Of course, with a lens of this kind the bokeh quality (subjective) is important too. By they way, internal focusing is a bonus since I’m often out and about in very adverse conditions. But, touch wood, no moisture have ever entered my trusted 200-500 despite the external focus mechanism. So maybe nothing to worry about?
@@freetibet1000 The 200-500 seems solid enough as long as you don't travel to super dusty areas or use it in the rain. And it's true, the throw on the zoom ring is pretty ridiculous.
But it looks like they have improved pretty much all of that. And didn't the 200-500 launch at a similar price, too?
@@MattisProbably Yes, I think it launched around the same price point as this new one. Since I’m still in the DSLR camp with a D850 & D810 I will have to wait a while longer anyway. But I’m very impressed with what Nikon have produced for the Z line users. And this affordable zoom is bound to become a big hit for them. Thanks for a inspiring conversation.
Thanks for the confirmation the 70-180 is a Nikkor authorized version of Tamron
temptation
5:10 ducky seems happy with the sharpness.
Nice video. But what a pity to not try some teleconverter wich Nikon recommended. I can not to believe that it works with TC 2.0 perfectly focused ?!?
Nice, I will grab a copy of the 180-600mm. Looks like an all around great zoom range for wildlife photography. Too bad that Nikon announces great lenses and still don't have it in stock. The 800mm, the 600mm and the 400mm F2.8 Z lenses... Hey! Thanks for pronouncing "bouquet" in the correct way! International photographers rejoice! : )
Hey did you got the Fuji XS20?
How’s the vr stops on a z50? - 4?
Compared to 400 4.5 Z-which you prefer?
Which camera would you recommend between the Nikon D850 and the Nikon Z7 MK2? You have a lot of experience in photography and have use a lot of different cameras.
Hi Chris! Which bag are you carrying on this shoot?
Bokeh is actually really nice generally speaking.
Hate it when the VR switch isn't on the lens but I'd imagine you'd have VR on most of the time anyway with a lens like this.
And wow, it's nice to see a reasonable price on a lens these days.
I have a switch on the lens, S 150-600 S, and I never remember what the options 1 and 2 represent on the lens. I'd prefer choosing on the menu and actually understand what I choose.
Could you use a programable button? I'm not sure if vr is an option
Is the 180-600 also a Tamron based lens? Might be comparable to their DSLR 150-600
How much estimated price list for those lenses?
Another win for Nikon
Is this lens coming in FX fit for DSLR also ?
Let us know about the SHARPNESS IN THE EDGES please (70-180), So us landscapers get a precise idea. thanks
Does this lense work on the z5?
Balancement on the Z6 mkII?
where is XS20 and Canon R8 final?
OMG, I just bought Z100-400 few days ago.
Is the 180-600 parfocal?
The 180-600 is a great lens. I bought the 180-600mm rather than the 600mm and the money I saved paid for half of the Z 800mm. Then I upgraded the 180-600 to the amazing 100-400mm S lens. With these 2 lenses that can both be put into a carry-on bag, covers the entire range of 100mm-1,600mm. (with TCs). The 100-400 has very close focusing and fits into the case for the 70-200 lens.
