    For me, it all came down to the daily driver. I just didn’t want to be driving a 3/4 ton in cities or busy tourist spots. I also like the easy access to everything and not having to do set up and tear down in the rain. You still have some of that in a class A but not much. Finally, as a single woman, I just feel safer in my motorhome when overnighting on the road.

    Full time traveler here for about 6 yrs now. Started in a class A and 5 months ago got into a 5th wheel. Love my 5th wheel. When I decided to go full-time, I chose a class A because I wanted to do a lot of boondocking and as a single woman, I wouldn't need to leave my class A to get ina truck. If there was drama, I could just get into the driver's seat and go. I've since learned it's pretty safe out here but always trusting your instincts is a must. Great video!! Safe travels!

    @Michaelw777.52 Před rokem +29

    Another great and timely video! My brother and I were just discussing this - and here you are talking about it! I'll add a few other thoughts.
    Big plus to the motor home when traveling in inclement weather. Wind? Rain? Snow? In the 5th wheel, you're going to get wet and probably track in dirt, sand, dust, mud when you're setting up camp or just have to go to the bathroom. Motor home? Walk to the bathroom in comfort every time. No mess, no muss, no fuss.
    I realize that if you had a house problem with the motor home, you had to sleep somewhere else while they fixed it - but that's equally true with a trailer. And if it's the power train, there's only an advantage if you conveniently broke down after getting your rig parked and set up. In fact, if there's an engine breakdown on the road - you've got your toad to take you into town and get help or repair items: having a second engine could be a real life-saver. I'm going to give the advantage to the motor home here too. And if you need towing instead, I'm thinking the motorhome will be easier than towing both a truck/trailer combo - or worse, towing your vehicle in, and coming back to tow the trailer too that was left on the side of the road - or having to have two tow trucks out at once.
    I think security is better with the motorhome. Trailers can and do get stolen when you're away from camp: they're harder to lock down and a lot of that can be defeated fairly quickly. A lot tougher with the motor home.
    You made a great case on quality differences between the two. I sold a small 2015 camping trailer and bought instead a 2002 motor home - the difference in quality and sturdiness, even in something 13 years older, was amazing. And as you mentioned, all the bouncing down the road in the trailer is going to shorten its life: all that vibration just can't be good for it. But the motorhome has much less vibration inside: things should last much longer, and there's probably less flexing from all that bouncing around.

      Hey Liz, you didn't mention gas mileage between the two.. can you please mention on your next video.. thanks, Larry

    • @Microage2009
      @Microage2009 Před rokem

      Not true if you comparing a cheap travel trailer or 5th wheel. Their has to be a direct comparison in quality of the trailer versus the motorcoach. I’m sure you arnt comparing a 1 million Newmar to a first river travel trailer. My drv has a better solar and lithium setup then a 1.25 million dollar mountain air.

    • @LizAmazing
      @LizAmazing  Před rokem +2

      Such great comments, they really add to the video. Thank you so much! Great point about inclement weather, break downs and security! As far as gas mileage, I am SAVING money with the motorhome bc my daily driver gets much better mileage than the one ton pickup that was towing the fifth wheel. I'm getting 7.9 with the motorhome, was getting 9 with the fifth wheel. BUT the daily driving difference between the two is where the real savings are. Thanks for watching and commenting!

    • @robeykeysonline
      @robeykeysonline Před rokem

      They are very prone to leaking. The flexing on the body is rough. Especially in states that have bad roads.
      She should get a class c in my humble opinion.

    We have had 3 fifth wheels and now a MH (gas). I am 69 and when we were younger, the set up and breakdown was no problem. But at 64 (5 years ago) with bad knees and an arthritic back, it got real old. So we bought a 2018 Thor Hurricane (when they were actually built pretty well). Wow. What a difference. Unhook the toad, back in, level up and you are camping. We’ve never had an outside TV and love it. Residential frig with ice maker. We’ve had very few problems since ours was built pre pandemic. Bath and a half. Love it. We have our own bathrooms. So at this point in our lives after both knees being replaced, MH for us. Luv ya Liz!

    One other advantage of a motor home is the ability to either back in or drive forward into the campsite. This is most often used when camping without hookups and the best view is out of the front windshield, like a lake or mountain view site.

    Currently in Florida for our 4th winter. Second Class A. We really love Class A. Ours weighs 22.5 ton (45,600 pounds) and it just FEELS so much more secure than a flimsy bumper pull camper or 5th wheel. Smooth ride and plenty of room. First one we had was gas, and we loved her. This second one is diesel. We love it, too, but the cost of diesel is (currently) just ridiculous.

    • @LizAmazing
      @LizAmazing  Před rokem

      Hi Kathy! Thanks for your comment. Diesel is going down a bit in price. I'm noticing I am saving money on fuel each month by traveling just once or twice a month. The rest of the time I am using my gas toad which is way more fuel efficient. When I was in a fifth wheel I had no choice but to use that big old diesel truck 100% of the time. My husband wanted the 5th wheel. I wanted a Class A. I won because, we both had cars & didn't have room for a truck. His car was a company car for work, so we couldn't sell one. Plus, we had 2 dogs at the time & our oldest son lives in
    Oregon. We had lots to see between Atlanta & Oregon. If we decided to stop at a roadside attraction or needed to grocery shop, we could leave the dogs in the rig with the air conditioning running for them. The set up & break down was so easy & we didn't have to transfer the dogs, they were already in their home! Not to mention I could use the bathroom & not worry about finding a place we would fit. I could make lunch, coffee or grab snacks and we only had to stop for gas! HUGS ~Donna

    Great video, Liz, thank you! We started out RV'ing with a 5th wheel, but only had it for 9 months. It quickly became apparent that it wasn't the best choice for us. Build quality was very disappointing, storage was lacking, parking it was a challenge. So, after 9 months we traded it for a Class A diesel pusher. We enjoyed that coach for two years until we discovered it was quite vulnerable to cross winds and effects of passing tractor trailers - I'm talking white knuckle conditions! So here we are in our third RV, a 2020 Newmar Dutch Star 4369. Finally, an RV we are happy with. Plenty of storage, great build quality, rock steady on the interstate, it tows our Jeep Wrangler with ease, and it is a bath and a half! The thing is, what may look good on paper might not actually work out that way in reality, no matter how much homework you do before buying, you really need to live in it, to experience it, to know what works best for you.

      It's a pain to find mechanics for Diesels pushers as most mechanics only deal with gas and the diesel engine itself is difficult to access hence why some diesel mechanics won't bother with them, also they take longer to repair, in my opinion, even with money they aren't worth it

    Great video Liz. We have had 3 different 5th Wheels and now that hubby has retired, we are looking for a used Newmar Dutch Star. I love the idea of a motorhome, like you said, you don't have to get out of the truck to go to the bathroom or stop and make a sandwich, especially if it's cold and windy. We leave Tues in our Montana headed to Indiana to spend Christmas with our daughter and our only two grandbabies, ages 3 and 1. Praying for good weather but we know it will be very cold, especially coming from Southern Ca.

    An older 5th wheel - depending on brand - is usually built much better than many RVs today. It's great to only have to worry about servicing one engine instead of two and 5th wheels have way less to break down than a Class A. It's also much easier to get a truck serviced than a Class A. I want to spend time in Nature, not in some shop, which is a much more common occurrence with today's Class A's & the other slipshod RVs being pushed out nowadays without enough quality control.

    Great content. I have to think maintenance would be a wash if you had a gas motorhome and a diesel truck with 5th wheel. Just everyday maintenance is dramatically more expensive on the diesel tryck than on the two gas engines (motorhome and towed). Also, I think initial cost is a wash also (if looking at used). The cost of the truck you HAVE to have to pull modern 5th wheels that weigh 16,000 pounds or more brings the cost of trailer and truck a lot more inline with the cost of a motorhome and tow setup (assuming you already have a car you can tow). I always felt the 5th wheel was much more home-like, but when I looked at the price of used trucks these days it was an immediate decision to go Class-A. 12 years ago I bought a 12-year old diesel to pull a 5th wheel. I paid a little over $6k for that truck. Today the same truck, that is now 25 years old, is $12000. If I wanted to look at another 12 year old truck, I"m looking at a minimum of $25k. Add that to the price of a 10 year old 5th wheel ( $30-35,000). You're looking at $55,000 to $60,000. I can get a 12yo Tiffin Diesel Pusher for $56k or a Gasser for $25,000-35,000. It's something to think about.

    • @LizAmazing
      @LizAmazing  Před rokem

      That's exactly how I feel, Brian! Trucks are so outrageously expensive these days. You're right that a gas motorhome will likely give you an advantage on maintenance costs. Thanks for your comment.

We like the ability to park the camper and drive off in the towing vehicle. We have always said a motorhome would not be for us. But you raised some great points we never thought of before. We had a Reflection 320 MKS for 2 years which we really liked. We traded for a Solitude 380 FL and really love it. It seems more solid with the 6 hydraulic levelers. We tow with an F450 dually. Parking the truck can be challenging, but we choose to park in the back of parking lot and walk in, not a big deal. We thought about a DP, but the negatives of maintenance and insurance while also having to pull a tow vehicle we decided against it. That’s not to say a class A diesel pusher isn’t in our future as we get older. There are pros and cons to every options. Thanks for your great informative vids.

    Your videos are so great. So much info. My hubby and I have been kicking around which do we want. We went from Class A to a 5th wheel in our thoughts. Because of the breakdown issue and not wanting to lose the home if it needed work done on it. We have 6 cats! lol. Now I'm thinking a Class A towing a van that's equipped with a bed and sink, etc. So if the Class A breaks down we would still have a place to sleep with our 6 cats. As long as it's not too heavy to pull with the Class A. Again... your info is awesome. Thanks so much!

  • @earlhunt2815
    @earlhunt2815 Před rokem +2

    Liz, outstanding comparison!! You nailed it: OCCC (occupant cargo carrying capacity). Most fifth wheel frames come from one manufacturer. That frame is not designed to carry the weight owners will put in the cavernous storage of built-ins. I discovered NO RV salesperson will voluntarily disclose the OCCC and will in fact play dumb and lie through their teeth. This is also true for Class C motorhomes. When tiffin come out with their Class C we were serious about buying one until we looked at the carrying capacity which was less than 750 lb. Tiffin engineers were designing Class A solid wood cabinets and solid countertops along with a host of other heavy heavy interior furnishings. Even leash your way has problems with the cargo carrying capacity so you have to be very careful. We wound up buying a fully loaded Winnebago Navion minus the leveling jacks because they weigh a little over 200 lb. Our capacity is 1300 lb. There are fifth wheels that are not much more.... That's shocking. For the most part, Class A frames are built to safely carry the weight.

    • @LizAmazing
      @LizAmazing  Před rokem +1

      Yes! So glad to hear you did the research, Earl! Airstreams are another one where the CCC is super low, about 1200 pounds. That's not much for fulltiming it so most folks end up weighing down their truck bed with stuff. Thanks for your comment and see you in the New Year!

    Nice video Liz, I have over 90,000 miles on my 40 foot Monaco diesel pusher and another advantage to the diesel pusher is driving when it is windy. I have driven when trailers could not stay in there lane due to wind and I did not even feel the wind until I opened the door and could not hold the door. The much wider tire track of the class A diesel makes a big difference in stability. I usually run the generator with at least one air con on so the RV is always at a good temp

Every time we go somewhere, I get that churning sensation in my stomach when it comes to backing in a spot. Having a motor home it seems like it would be easy. I remember the second time out in our brand new Coachmen Catalina, I backed into a tree on the side of the camper and caused almost $6000 worth of damage! Camper was in the shop the whole summer. I don't think that would have happened if I was in a motor home. Anyway, thanks for an awesome video and keep 'em coming!

    Another great video Liz. My wife and I bought a used class A. Previously, we had 2 bikes to take short trips to the store or on bike trails at the campground. We are now going to have a toad. We will let you know how that goes. Our class A costs less than a new compact car. We love it. My wife can use the restroom or make me a sandwich, while we are going down the road at 60 mph

    Very well done, I have neither if I was in the market hands down the motor home. Would be nice just to pull over in a rest area and jump from the driver seat to bathroom and then a snack. Without ever leaving the vehicle.

      YES! Especially if it's raining, cold, or just dicey out there. Thanks for watching, Frank!

    My wife and I love our new Newmar Dutch Star class A. Just sold our truck and Montana 3781RL and we don't regret it. Will never have another 5th wheel

    Great video Liz, yes the cargo carrying weight in a fifth wheel is sorely lacking . Not to mention the axles that are just big enough. And the suspensions that must be upgraded just to be decent. 👍

      You're so right, Ken. They are just bouncing down the road shaking everything apart. Thanks for watching.

    I been taking my time and won’t be ready to decide in about 5 years. I do like the paradigm brand from alliance fifth wheel. I also like the entry level FR30DS forest River class A. I do already have1 ton Chevy duramax truck . If I buy a class a it will be used within five years.

    Our past few 5Rs we lost everything except the bathroom and bedroom while the slides were closed. Even the bedroom was almost impossible to get to the closet or open any drawers with that slide closed. We were on the fence for a while before the latest camper purchase. A Class A has so many pros but because of the extra expenses even break downs cost possibilities we just got a 34' 5R .

      Glad you considered your options, Kenneth. Yes, the expenses are probably pretty endless with a motorhome. Happy travels to you and see you in the next video.
