Meet the chef putting a unique twist on Southern food

Ryan Fernandez' culinary career started as a side gig. Now, the chef - born in India and raised in Ireland and Texas - is whipping up unique dishes, combining the flavors of his childhood with Southern classics. Jeff Glor reports.

Why Fernandez? Is his dad Mexican

Not sure why you default to Mexican. There’s way more than one country with that surname.
It’s also not uncommon to find the Fernandez name (as well as other Spanish and Portuguese surnames) in some Indian states. A byproduct of colonialism.

Portugal had a colony in Kerala India and some locals adopted Portuguese/Spanish surnames - maybe he got it from there.
