      The best way to kill many plants in the winter is to do too much with them. Most hydrangeas that are hardy in your area will over winter just fine in a pot, out in the weather. If that makes you nervous, cover them with some white plastic and don't let them dry out.

    I asked a question on one of your other videos about the oak leaf and I apologize if I am being redundant. When trimming the oak leaf like you are showing here, would this plant have flowers on it the next season? I am under the impression that they bloom on last seasons growth. So for the best presentation, would it just need to be pruned 2 seasons before sale ready? Or am I missing something? Thanks

    • @savvydirtfarmer
      @savvydirtfarmer  Před 3 lety +3

      People call many hydrangeas "mophead." Usually just means they have big blooms. If it's a variety that blooms on new growth, prune it any time of year, won't matter. If it blooms on previous season's growth I would deadhead/prune NOW.... so it will still have some time to put on new growth for next season's blooms.

    • @savvydirtfarmer
      @savvydirtfarmer  Před 2 lety +1

      They should come back the following season once you plant them. That said, nurseries are always going to bring in plants at their peak bloom - that's their best selling point. From there, the bloom may hang on for a while (or not), but it's typically going to fade. The nursery got your money in their pocket, sold you a beautiful plant, and weren't concerned what happened to it once it made it to your house. Macrophylla hydrangeas are notoriously unreliable bloomers anyway - pruning at the wrong time, poor soil, late season freezes all wreak havoc on them.

      Use plastic tubs/totes with white lids. Stick cuttings, inside, keep ,moist and keep in the shade. Drill holes in the bottom for drainage.

    Can you just put them out into the garden without " plugs"?

    • @savvydirtfarmer
      @savvydirtfarmer  Před 2 lety +1

      A small rooted cutting may survive in the garden, but they are very fragile. Growing them plug style makes that transition much more likely to be successful.

    I was always told you need a node on the bottom of the cutting for roots to grow is that not true will roots grow on the bottom of the cutting without a node

    • @savvydirtfarmer
      @savvydirtfarmer  Před 3 lety +6

      There are many, many plants that can be rooted this way and hydrangeas only need 1 node. MANY others need two or more. Like almost everything in gardening, the answer is almost always, "it depends."

      @@savvydirtfarmer would it help the plugs to have root starter on them before put in soil?

    Not necessary to use a rooting hormone ❓

      I don't use it at all. I've used it before and see no difference.

    Hey 👋 I want to do this and I go and get some hydrangeas and I got so overwhelming with EVERYTHING and it got wilted. I don’t think 🤔 the girl 👧 would mind. I am going to go back over there 👉 and ask her AGAIN. I meant to take her some day lilies from my yard. I need to do that and take it to her and see if it would be ok because she has several 🍃 leaves 🍃. I don’t think 🤔 she has to much time to pull weeds and I think 🤔 I might have to pull those weeds for her to help her out. ❤️ I need to get them so I can put them together. I really do appreciate you showing me how to do this so I can follow through.It is absolutely easier every time I watch you cut the cutoffs. Now that 6 week old plant 🌱 can cut it up as well or do I need to Wait?

      Once a plant starts rooting and putting on new growth, let that growth get a little bit of size on it, then prune them and stick the cuttings for more plants. This is how you turn 100 plants into 2000 plants in a year!
