Beautiful work by the Russian composer Julius Conus (1869-1942). He was foremost a violinist, which is evident in the virtuosic and idiomatic writing for the violin. The music is in the footsteps of Borodin or Tchaikovsky, and one can also trace ideas back to Mendelssohn's concerto, in that the movements/parts follow without a break. It's like one big movement with a slow mid-section, and themes from the beginning reappear in the last part, where also the big cadenza is. Masterly performed by Itzhak Perlman.
