  • The Ancient Greeks knew how to choose a site for a temple. At Cape Sounion, 70km south of Athens, the Temple of Poseidon stands on a craggy spur that plunges 65m to the sea.
Cape Sounion is noted for its Temple of Poseidon, one of the major monuments of the Golden Age of Athens.
The frieze's fragments that have survived, is believed they illustrated popular mythological themes of amazonomachy (or a battle between Centaurs and Lapiths), gigantomachy, and the deeds of Theseus. They were carved in white marble from Paros.
Made entirely of white marble, it was erected in the middle of the 5th century BC and built to honour Poseidon, God of the Sea. Built same year as the Parthenon - it is a vision of gleaming white columns. It is thought that the temple was built by Iktinos, the architect of the Temple of Hephaestus in Athens' Ancient Agora.
On a clear day you can see Kea, Kythnos and Serifos to the southeast, and Aegina and the Peloponnese to the west.
Sailors in ancient times knew they were nearly home when they saw the first glimpse of white, and views from the temple are equally impressive.
British poet Lord Byron was one of many who fell under its spell, composing poetry in its honour.
Byron's lines from Don Juan: 'Place me on Sunium’s marbled steep/Where nothing save the waves and I/May hear our mutual murmurs sweep.'
Byron was so impressed by Sounion that he carved his name on one of its iconic marble pillars.
When you visit Cape of Sounion you will be mesmerised by the blankets of blues, reds and oranges that engulf the temple as the sun descends into the sea.
I used timelapse & hyperlapse techniques for the film.
