New Volvo XC60: You won't believe what's changed inside!

  • This is the Volvo XC60, and Mat’s about to find out if it’s as good in 2023 as it was when it was first released in 2017!
Well for starters, let’s take a look at the design. If we’re being honest, it hasn’t changed all that much from the original 2017 edition… But that’s not necessarily a bad thing! It’s got a good-looking, well proportioned side profile, and certain areas come with smart looking chrome trim, such as around the grille at the front. There is the option to swap this for black trim, but we’d definitely choose to keep the chrome!
Take a step inside and it’s a similar story with the design of the outside - it’s all pretty similar to how it was back in 2017. The portrait style infotainment system remains, although we’re not the biggest fan of it, given all controls are managed via the touchscreen. Thankfully though it’s surrounded by soft touch materials throughout the cabin, apart from the odd bit of scratchy plastic dotted around. The latest version of the XC60 also comes with a full digital dial drivers display!
There are a number of engines to choose from. There’s a 2-litre diesel with 197hp, or a 2-litre turbo petrol with 250hp. There are also two plug-in hybrid editions that make use of the 2-litre turbo petrol, with the range-topper delivering 455hp. Each comes with a 14kWh battery pack and the ability to drive on electric power alone for up to 43 miles.
When it comes to the price, an entry-level XC60 starts from just under £48,000, rising all the way up to around £68,000! So given the design has hardly changed in the last few years, is it really worth it? Or should you go for something like a Mercedes GLC or Audi Q5 instead? Let us know in the COMMENTS!

We bought one last week! Very happy with it in general. The android infotainment system is great with Spotify and Google Maps but it occasionally has its issues lags/freezes etc. The air suspensions makes it the most comfortable Volvo I have ever driven but it kinda drives like a boat because of it. We found the GLC too expensive for its interior quality. The X3 was also great but 22/23 models lack crucial features because of chip shortage.

The Volvo's front drive or Haldex (as in the Passat) puts me off a bit. And the biggest disadvantage of the volvo is that there are no engines above 2.0. I don't know about this model, but in other Volvos the fit of the interior is at a nightmare level, everything creaks when you touch it. Since the Chinese bought them, the quality has dropped dramatically.

I'm not sure about the latest model but in my XC60 T8 in the boot there is a second pair of buttons that allows you to auto fold rear seats. As for the mode change then on the center consol there is a "scroll button", when you press it down it allows you to change the driving modes.

Yeah the 2024 doesn’t have that little scroll to change the driving mode (I had the 2020 xc90 so I know exactly what you are referring to…) I was considered at first looking for it lol but it’s in the infotainment system , not a fan of that I much rather the scroll button 🤷🏽‍♀️ but I guess choose your mode before you start driving and that way you don’t have to struggle looking for it…

We owned a 2020 XC60 R-Design, and have just taken delivery of our 2023 B6 Ultimate. Both cars had the maximum configuration.
I have to say, I'm not particularly impressed with this iteration. Sure the wireless Android Auto is cool. The trade-offs are however: a less sporty feel (yes, I know, it's a comfort SUV), no self-parking (this was such a nice feature for tight spots downtown), speed limiter at 180 kph (I've gotten, sorry *heard*, our 2020 could get up to 220 with relative ease), the driving mode switching is unnecessarily complicated.
It's disappointing to see such changes.
Maybe the speed limiter is a Canada only thing.

I’m on to my third XC60 in its current incarnation. Have to say the change to Android/Google is a disappointing backward step compared to the old Volvo system. It might improve with future updates but so far mine has been back to the dealership twice since it was purchased in January. The first over air update completely crashed the car which had to be dragged on to a low loader. Generally the IT is more laggy than the old system and routinely fails to recognise my mobile. Final grouch, for a £50k car why does it only offer wired Apple Car Play??

As a testdriver at Volvo, the google maps in the infotainment is GOLDEN. They removed some nice and useful things from the former infotainment system (like being able to swipe to the sides to get to the lighter settings) but overall this new android based one is better, not as good as Polestar 2 maybe but it is up there. Not a fan of you having to enter the settings to switch between charging and hold mode if you have a hybrid (the little wheel to change the modes doesnt work on our testcars so I dont know exactly what you can change with it now).
