Mass Effect 2 - What Happens If You Don't Release Grunt from the Tank?

- In this video, I'll show you what happens if you leave Grunt in the tank in Mass Effect 2, including consequences for Mass Effect 3.
MASS EFFECT 3 - WHAT HAPPENS IF YOU SAVE THE RACHNI QUEEN?
• Mass Effect 3 - What H...
MASS EFFECT 3 - HOW TO SAVE MIRANDA
• Mass Effect 3 - How to...
The Krogan warlord Okeer is one of the first squadmates we can attempt to recruit in Mass Effect 2. When we visit his facility on Korlus, he agrees to join our crew and shares his life’s work - a tank bred Krogan, genetically engineered for perfection.
Things go to shit when the Blue Suns Commander, Jedore, decides to destroy the facility, along with Okeer and all his specimens. Okeer sacrifices himself to save the tank-bred Krogan.
Shepard and crew acquire the Krogan tank and bring it aboard the Normandy. At this point, most players will go ahead and activate the tank, bringing to life one of the more entertaining companions in the Mass Effect Trilogy.
But let’s see what happens if we don’t open the tank... Other than being down one squadmate, not much changes in the rest of the game. The tank remains in the Port Cargo hold and you’re able to go down and activate it anytime, should you choose to do so.
If you finish Mass Effect 2 without ever releasing Grunt from the tank, there are some ramifications in a major side quest in Mass Effect 3.
Before Priority Tuchanka, the head of Clan Urdnot will ask you to search for a team of missing Krogan scouts who were investigating reports of Rachni activity. This elite Krogan unit, called Aralakh Company, is usually led by Grunt. But since Grunt never made it out of the tank, the company is led by Urdnot Dagg instead.
Much like Grunt, Dagg will help cover your escape at the end of the mission, staying behind to fight a horde of Ravagers. But unlike Grunt, Dagg will always die in this encounter - regardless of whether you decided to save the Rachni queen or not.
Aralakh Company will survive if you decide to abandon the Rachni Queen, but without Grunt’s leadership they will only be worth 25 war assets, as opposed to 75 if Grunt were alive and loyal.
And that’s basically it. There’s no unique dialogue or anything else related to leaving Grunt in the tank. This outcome is pretty much identical to what happens if Grunt dies at the end of Mass Effect 2. So leaving in the tank is basically the same as leaving him for dead.
If you don’t release Grunt, you get kicked out of the fandom

That Turian did not want to do the paper work.
Sounds about right, we're perfectionists.
Best boi deserves his Spicey noodles
I first saw this playing as FemShep, it warmed my heart. Jennifer Hale delivered that line perfectly
Wish Grunt could have been recruited into the Squad after the Krogan Team mission. Love that Krogan
agreed. Him and Samara really should have joined back up, would have made sense.
You can unlock Grunt for temporary use if he's still alive in Mass Effect 3 via The Citadel DLC's Combat Simulator.
He he he
@@Xiaolruc what do you mean if, of course I'm going to do mordin's mission so naturally I should do grunts as well, it just makes sense.
@@colossusslayer1234 Jack and Miranda after their missions as well
Imagine if you never released Grunt and then EDI cracks his tank while the Collectors take the ship meaning only half the crew gets taken
Wow i wished they wrote that into the game. Makes so much sense.
That would be brilliant. I'm going to write a fanfiction where the Collectors have jammed the airlock and EDI can't space them.
So when Joker unshackles her, she wakes Grunt instead.
Joker is wondering what's happening, then he hears a roar and lots of smashing and screaming as Grunt headbutts all the Collectors into oblivion.
Shepard returns to find a blood covered Grunt congratulating Joker on being a suprisingly cunning strategist for getting to the AI core unharmed.
That…
Is GENIUS
would be great to be met with a message from EDI along the lines of
"Shepard, the collectors attacked the ship, attempting to abduct the crew. they were partially successful, until I took the liberty of freeing the Krogan and providing him with firearms from the armory. the interior hull damage is more severe than I projected, but not beyond repair. You will, however, need to subdue the Krogan before the remaining crew can come out of hiding." and then have a modified version of the scene from when grunt is released from the tank initially upon entering the ship
@@Pro_Butcher_Amateur_Human did you ever make this? I want to read it.
I can imagine the collectors opening grunts tank and then grunt just beating the hell out of everything on the Normandy but on a real note how do you search the whole ship and not take the frozen krogen
THat would have been a hell of a reminder that he is in the tank lol. Could have had it as a distraction for joker
Aren't the collectors only interested in humans?
@@battlesheep2552 Negative, they just love a tomfoolery of many a race being manipulated into genetic experiments. Though, they appear to keep technologically low races alone.
@@battlesheep2552 The collectors are the species who designed and acquired the various creatures we fight in Mass Effect 3. At least that would make sense.
Because they weren't tasked by harbinger to take non humans, the collectors were solely interested in the humans
Thing is. I am too biased in this game to try different outcomes.
Me too bro, i just can't replay the ME trilogy because of that, lol
@@martuuk8964 I’m the opposite lol. I mostly play paragon But go renegade at times for example in interrups or 10% of the dialouge. But I always play more or less the same way lol.
That's why I never play my characters how I would react. It gets boring because you repeat everything.
I give each character in every rpg a certain persona and make decisions after that.
Only rule is, my first character is always the picture book hero, the second an anti hero (in ME case 90% renegade, 10 paragon, not a total monster but also not a pussy) and the very last one is my pure evil run.
I can't understand how people can ALWAYS choose the same romance, the same squad, make the same decision etc.
@@19Sephirot93 my first play through is always my morality, then renegade and never paragon.
My morality is 80% paragon anyways.
@eqw alle I picked renegade just for that lmao
imagine being the voice actor for the krogan that replaces Grunt that 99% of players never know about
That is probably similar for the VA of Urdnot Wreav, who replaces Wrex if he's dead
Who the hell lets Wrex die
It was far more common than you think. Mass Effect 3 has Wrex dead and no Grunt around as the default option.
@@BierBart12 Killing Wrex in ME1 is one of the smartest decisions you can make in the trilogy.
@@Garvak kk
@@BierBart12 I mean, Wreav appears a few times in ME3 anyway when Wrex is alive
Honestly this is a pretty terribly designed choice. Not even sure why they included it if they weren't going to do anything with it.
Your idea is actually pretty cool, have the collectors abduct him as well if you haven't activated him, and he becomes a mini-boss in the final mission.
I don’t know, even this was a lot of effort for a scenario which will be chosen by practically nobody, for a regular playthrough:D
It’d be like Jack in the end of mass effect 3 if you don’t do the grissom academy side mission
Or have him come up later in ME3 as a krogan modified by reapers..... that's a scary cool thought
I actually think it mostly makes sense. Yeah Dan's idea of having the Collectors / Reapers use Grunt for something is a good one. If they don't do that then maybe somebody could've used Grunt in ME3 if not awakening him, maybe using his body for something (maybe part of finding the cure for the Genophage). But that would take some ingenuity and collaboration on the part of the Alliance or other galactic organisations. Yes there are plenty of clever people in the galaxy that could've found a use for Grunt. But if a large organisation run by bureaucrats like Udina got their hands on a powerful Genetically Modified Krogan, they'd most likely keep it on ice indefinitely, not viewing it as a worthwhile investment.
It would've been cool if BioWare made more of the choices more meaningful / have a wider impact, there are endless ideas for each of the characters. But if Grunt isn't awakened he is nothing, like an aborted embryo. An affect might be felt through his absence, but within the military it makes sense that somebody else would fill in his role. If he's not awakened the only people aware of this Genetically Modified Krogan are Sherpard's crew.
Honestly before watching this video I thought eventually he broke out on his own
But Grunt is your adopted kid, why wouldn't you want him on the team???
At that point grunt is officially a dumpster baby
The dumb thing is: why would Shepard even bring him and keep him on board if he never planned on opening him?
Out of respect for the dead Warlord who gave his life for the tank.
So nobody else could use him.
Opening the package decreases its value
Why is that dumb? Opening is said to be an enourmous risk. He could just keep it for scientists to look at, or because its of value for enemies. First playghrough I took the warnings serious and waited several missions. Imo its a great implementation
Why would you leave a super soldier of the already OP alien race just laying there?
You'd think the alliance would have opened his tank (in a secure facility, of course), after acquiring the Normandy... Appreciate these "what if" videos - my Shepard hates leaving such things undone!
Well.. No Alliance "Secure Facility" can be more secure than in Shepard hands. Dude's immortal
What would I give for a Krogan supersoldier on the Collector Base! Heck, even just coming across Collector logs that show Grunt going absolutely berserk and trashing the place before eventually dying to Collector gunfire would be insanely satisfying as well.
Watching Dag get torn apart is kinda rough to watch, though, even though we don't know him.
What about Javik? He could sense the strong krogan in his room. Does he just say nothing about that or something different?
“I sense you had a krogan in this room before... he was very powerful”
“Yeah javik, uhh he’s right there in the tube”
“Oh, in my cycle we would have just thrown him out the airlock”
He'd probably congratulate Shepard for being wise enough not to open the tank, but then scold him for not sending the whole thing out of the airlock.
I’m happy this mans still helping us with Mass Effect. Even now,
Damn lol now I'm piss I really wanted too fight a super collector grunt now😭
"Hey Commander you catch stray cats as a kid? Because we needed a Mega Krogan so thanks for bringing him on!" - Joker
you really got me with the super Krogan. respect.
I still love, to this very day (literally), to explore all these roads, rabbit trails, paths in this trilogy. Can't wait for the remaster, also. These three are still my favorite games of all. My wife and I love it, we even had some Mass Effect stuff in our wedding. And, Big Dan, just subscribed. Been really enjoying your content here. Fun stuff, thanks!
Man, your videos are amazing because you explore options that I would never choose. What a service!
Man these videos touch on decisions i would never even think of making
I've watched quite a few of your Mass Effect vids now and just wanted to tell you how much I've enjoyed them. A lot, so thanks.
"I love you grunt"
"Heh heh heh"
I'm curious, does anything change with Javik's dialogue if you don't release Grunt? He often talks about Grunt's previous presence in his quarters.
0:12 Now that is some stylish armor
Great content!
You answer so many questions I dont have the time or patience to get myself. Thanks big dan
Glad to see this channel is growing
And that's why you should always release him.
Another great video 👍 keep up the mass effect content
That last clip has incredible "thanks dad" energy
if wrex lives, you get to see him in grunt's loyalty mission i do believe
As head of Clan Urdnot, yes.
And to think, people were originally pissed that we got a non-Wrex Krogan in ME2. There’s room for multiple Krogan in my heart.
I love Grunt's laugh! Heheheh!
“I don’t need luck. I have ammo.”
I always hear Oghren when he laughs.

Leaving him in the tank is like abandoning my son! I can never do that!
thank you for making these videos. I literally cannot bring myself to make these decisions in game because I like the character so much.
That’s really interesting! I never thought of that scenario!
You’re right, It would’ve been more realistic if the collectors took Grunt and converted him in some way, he couldn’t been a powerful boss later on.
Wait? You guys didn't release Grunt?
Big Dan regularly goes through and makes terrible decisions in the Mass Effect games just so that we can know what happens without making those terrible decisions ourselves.

This guy does what we players don't have the heart to do...
Hes amazing
@@Viper631 Yeah i discovered this guy a few weeks ago and he has answered many questions i would never have taken to time to get because im brain damaged and cannot allow myself to play any other way except the "right" way lmao
I forgot about him.
I always thought you'd get a Game Over screen, with a tagline saying something along the lines of "Make better decisions and rethink your life."
Like they did for Garrus.
Whaaaaaat!?
Is that a Fallout Frontier reference? 🤔🤣
Wait. How do you get that for Garrus?
@@EvilPaladin11 You dont, this person is trying to bait you guys.
@@candlestyx8517 Well, they're right that the game changes a bit for the rare instance that you never recruited Garrus in ME1 but it doesn't give you a gameover screen.
2:23 I'm surprised that didn't happen in either Mass Effect 2 or 3 (probably if a disloyal Grunt died in the Rachni mission) because something I recently noticed about Grunt's armour is how it looks compatible with Reaper Dragons Teeth. The indentations around the stomach armour look suspiciously like the part left on Husks from when they get transformed (probably because Okeer mentioned the Collectors being involved in Grunt's creation somehow) so I wouldn't be surprised if those areas were able to open up and provide less physical resistance to the process.
Hell, having any squadmates who died during 2 or 3 becoming an enemy in the final missions of ME3 like the Jack Phantom and Morinth Banshee would be really dark. Eg: have Cerberus recover Legion and have it become the 'Legion Assassin' unit the same as selling it to Cerberus. Or (the darkest idea I came up with) have GARRUS become Marauder Shields if he died during the Collector Base or have him merged into a Brute with Grunt if the Krogan also died.
Also maybe have Jacob take Kai Leng's role if he survives (either have him remain committed to Cerberus or for a hideout he's located in get raided on The Illusive Man's orders and have him forcibly indoctrinated in an attempt to throw Shepard off balance during Citadel, Thessia and Cerberus HQ).
@@Jedi_Spartan like the jacob idea would make him better and spare us from dumb leng
damn bro you got me excited when you were talking about the collector's recovering his pod and turning him, real missed opportunity there
I love these what if videos because I be too damn scared to try it myself
The universe basically punishes you for leaving Steve Blum!
What about the DLC featuring Grunt and the restaurant and the dinner party in Mass Effect 3?
Is there any info what happened to the tank when the alliance to control of the Normandy.
Guess he just wouldn't be there, same as if he did at the end of ME2
@@jackwilson183 I'm going through the Citadel DLC now with an imported default ME2 save (no DLC or data from 1), Grunt definitely survived the collector base but he's not in the Citadel missions (as of just after the casino bit). I think he's in charge of Urdnot so maybe that has something to do with it?
You forgot the part about Javik talking about him first time
I like to imagine Femshep thinks of Grunt as her Krogan son, and Grunt thinks of her as Space Momma
Thankfully, I don't have to experience any of those bad choices, imho, and Dan is doing the work. I couldn't not get everybody and do quests the "right way". Thanks Dan!
Ahhhhh still in love w ME and the vids based on it, still cool that you make the impossible choices so we don't have to aha
NIce to see Mass Effect's still alive
Hey Dan! Would love to see a video about who characters get replaced with in ME3 if they die in ME2. Thank you for all of the great content!
Thanks Dan. I always wanted to know this, but just cant let my boi Grunt in this tank.
Edit: but I guessed it would be a similiar outcome to his death ... sad a missed opportunitiy. I believe it is the same for Wrex if you dont recruit him in ME1, the game will just play, like he's dead.
Imagine if you got him as a crew member in 3 because Anderson has his tank picked up and opened when the reapers come. Probably to much to do for a choice but coulda been cool. I still feel to this day that some choices that really shook up your crew list and such were needed
OMG Dan thank you. Almost no one does the lie option in citadel dlc
Yeah turns out if you don't open the tank, the tank doesn't open. The illusion of choice.
Aagh you got my hopes up when you said cool krogan husk
Lol that super tank Krogan husk fib threw me off
I remember playing the old 360 games as a 14 year old and having no hesitation because he looked so cool. All these year later still no hesitation....
What happens if you don t turn on legion
The same. Legion count as dead in ME3. If you follow Mirandas advice you can sell LEgions body to cerberus for 1.000 credits.... quite lame.
He gets reprogrammed by Cerberus and is an enemy in 3.
Nothing, really. Legion get replaced by a generic Geth that acts as the siphon for the Reaper code. Legion shows up as a minor enemy during the Cerberus base attack. You net less war assets with the generic Geth and the dialog is different. You won't be able to broker a peace deal b/w the quarians and geth, meaning you'll have to side with one or the other. Pick Genocide A or Genocide B by screaming into your omni-tool. The story variance and outcome is barely significant. There's no upside for selling him off.
Same thing with Mordin being replaced by Padok Wiks if he's dead during ME3 and Morinth appearing as a banshee. Bioware just shoves a finger in the dam.
Shoot !!!
And what happens if you don t recruit tali
Goddamnit, you made me believe the collectors turned him for a second. It would have a nice twist though since it appearantly didn't matter in the end
Operation Fire Cobra Claw. Best piece of content to ever come out of Bioware
This vid makes me want to play the entire trilogy a 5th time just to see him be released
That is actually weird that they didn't have him at least break free after the collectors get to your ship.
I love the joke about the krogan husk in the Collector base :D
Isn hes corpse supost be on cerberus base in me3? I read there must be hes bones bcs they exsperiment on him.
The collectors also leave Legion behind. I forgot to wake it up, only realized afterwards
I like to imagine that when shepherds goes back to earth the alliance find grunt and since he’s this super strong tank bred krogan they probably took the tank and just experimented on it
hm. can you still activate him after the collectors attack, i wonder?
"I am KROGAN!!!!"
POV: you've never played mass effect 1 or 2 and went straight to 3.
You can also give him to Cerberus btw.
You know what would have been fun. If in the Citadel DLC, when you are exploring the archives on the Citadel while you chase yourself (spoilers), that you find the unopened tank.
I tried this in one playthru. Nothing really incredible happens. He stays in the tank and u miss out on a cool squad mate and when u transfer to ME3 its just like he died in ME2.
does he just die if the tank never opens? do they ever talk about it in me3?
"Operation fire cobra claw" 😂😂😂
Could you do a video on what happens if Garrus dies in the suicide mission? Tali, too, for that matter as they both have pretty big roles in ME3
They have no squad replacements. It's just the other big Turian/Quarian characters that replace them in cutscenes/dialogue wise. The biggest change I can think of is that you absolutely can't get the Quarian/Geth peace without Tali
@@SirBigWater after my first playthrough on ME2 Tali always died. Every single time. I got lucky the first time and had all survive. Shes the only one who died after every time and I could never figure out why...
@@Viper631 You just gotta have the necessary ship upgrades, the loyalty missions done, and the right team placement during the Suicide Mission. Her having loyalty and putting her in the Tech expert spot at the beginning of it keeps her and others alive. I usually have Mordin as the guy to bring back the team before you go to fight the Human Reaper.
@@Viper631 Get all ship upgrades, complete Tali’s loyalty mission, never side with Legion, never put her in a leadership position, never put her on the same team with a not loyal Jacob or Garrus/unfit leader (aka anyone else aside from the always competent Miranda). If you want her to live in ME3, never side only with Legion, she’ll commit suicide otherwise.
Basically, do everything, and use your brain on the suicide mission.
@@Viper631 Building on what bigwater said, everything you have to do this:
1. Get all ship upgrades (don't need the scar repair one or the resource upgrades, just all defensive upgrades)
2. Do every squadmates side mission
3. Make sure you DONT show the evidence at Talis side mission, as you will not gain her loyalty, non-loyal squadmates are much more likely to die at the end. Either use a paragon or renegeade check, or simply have her exiled (this will still result in loyalty)
4. Use the proper squadmates, Tali or Legion in vents at beginning, Garrus, Miranda or Jacob for fireteam leader, Samara, Jack or Morinth for the biotic field.
If you do all this, Tali is guranteed to survive.
What are some other hidden dialog scenes that happen??
I was wondering if you do the ME2 suicide mission and you do all the Normandy upgrades and choose the correct characters but you did not loyalty missions. Who would die?
You should do these for Andromeda too!
Is there any specific dialogue or consequences if you open his tank really late, like post-game?
What happens if you don't release Grunt from the tank?
You end up watching a CZcams video about it.
Does Grunt's name end up on the "dead crew members" board?
I could never not release my little tank baby
This makes me wonder if it's possible to play the series in such a way that you can make ME3 play the exact same as if you started a fresh new character instead of importing a save.
My choices mattered.
What happens if you open him up after the final mission
Can you also research - What happens when you turn down a pay cheque after you earned it? Or receive a pay cheque but decide to never deposit it?
Thanks 😊
A Grunt husk-monster would've been epic though.
You don't get to hear/see the great hospital escape
Uh...which rachni queen ?
If you leave original (noveria) rachni queen to die you're wasting a lot of asset
Not really. Saving the queen in ME3 causes you to take a hit to war assets from the Krogan. It'll equal out no matter if you save the queen or kill her. But you will straight up lose assets if you save the Breeder.
@@davidlewis1418 no. The assets hit if you save the Queen only happen if you killed her on Noveria. Because she’s basically a Reaper creation in that case. She’s a big assets if you save her both time
@@davidlewis1418 well that's what I'm talking about, but I think saving the real rachni queen is worthed than aralakh company. But breeder on the other hand they're not worth to save at all

What happens if Wrex dies in ME1 as well?
Is it just Reave?
I do find it funny that there's a video for what happens if you DON'T release the pure Krogan supersoldier built for violence aboard your ship and not one for if you DO

I guess I was [hoping?] thinking the Illusive Man would have made hybrid/husk Krogan troops to fight in Cerberus encounters in ME3.
