  • I love experimenting and analyzing data, so in this video I’ll show you detailed portrait comparisons as I review the Canon Mark IV, EOS R and EOS R5 camera bodies and my three most used lenses the Canon EF 24-105mm f4, Canon EF 24-70mm f2.8 and the Canon EF 50mm f1.2. I include close-up zooms of the portraits so you can decide for yourself how they stack up. I’ll also compare the Canon EF 24-105mm f4 and the Canon RF 24-105mm f4 on the Canon R5 camera body. I’ll share my conclusions about the three cameras and which camera I prefer to use in my studio and why.

I'm a full-time wedding photographer and i've learned that r6 simply falls short of a quality camera. I picked up my old old mark 3 and while clunkier, produced way better photos light and dark, with greater image depths and tones. The r5 is fantastic...other than Mega pixels its marginally better than mark 3/4 in terms of image quality. For the newbies, i'm not talking about sharpness....leave for that for the forum clowns.
The r6 20mp is not enough... minor crops really leave you with nothing in terms of a high-resolution image.
This review... was excellent, thank you Nicole! Since we have different use cases i will say that I'm going back to mark iv since mark iii is great but just too slow for wedding use in modern times (slow meaning the shot buffer maxes out too quickly)

owned all of these and can't stand the colors on the R5. Always found them extremely difficult to correct

I own several of the models you tested here, but neither EF universal zoom. It was fascinating to compare the results from them all and thank you for making the effort to do this, which I found extremely helpful.

I currently use both the R and more recently the R5. My conclusion is pretty much in line with your findings after having shot with both the 5D Mk IV and 7D at length. The lens improvement is there. The R series helps improve the EF lens performance up to a point. The EF 100 Macro on the new bodies continues to impress me, comparably close to the RF 24-70.

I have found that even the mid-line RF lenses (I own the RF35mm f/1.8 and the RF85mm f/2) are sharper to my eye than my older EF-L glass on my R6 body. The eye tracking and real time EVF update for manual shooting are game changers, and I suspect that achieving focus directly on the sensor, coupled with the shorter lens to sensor distance accounts for much of the perceived improvement in sharpness. Excellent video!!

I loved your detailed review. Wow! It must have been a lot of work. Even I, who don't understand any English, it was easy to understand the video just by looking at the images. Great work! You make other CZcamsrs look lazy. 😄

Wow I was blown away by your examples. I really appreciate you sharing your work. Photography becomes art in the right hands. I appreciate the comparisons. I have the EOS R it has been great for me. I have a demanding full time career in healthcare. Photo is a side pursuit. I am interested in the R6 as I have been pulled into some wedding work. I have been using all RF glass. The quality is there. Minus dial card slots 😒

I used the EF 24-105 sometimes but never for anything I want tack sharp. I always thought it was lackluster.
A lot of your pics, and it might just be CZcams, didn't look tack sharp which surprised me from the r5.

Thank you for mentioning the photos in the video are not being displayed as sharp as the originals. Just for you, and others, I added a webpage to my website with jpegs of the comparison stills used in the video. You'll be able to view them more accurately :) Let me know if this helps... nicolebonillaportrait.com/canonr5/

Thank you for this comparison video Nicole. I have the Canon EOS 5Diii and the EOS R. The R has been an impressive upgrade from the 5Diii. I have been considering upgrading to the R6 due to the dual card slot and wheel and joystick on the back of the camera (similar to what was on the 5Diii). However I am concerned about the lower MP on the R6. I am a portrait photographer and want to be able to print reasonably sized enlargements. I may eventually upgrade to the R5. Your images and styling are so inspirational to me. I love your videos x

Thank you so much for the feedback! I WISH Canon would have made the R6 with 30 megapixels. I'm assuming they had their reasons not to.

Again , thank you for another fantastic and helpful video. I been getting motivated watching your videos.
I have already my Canon R6 and I love it for what I been doing weddings as a second shooter and events, my main focus that I want it is portraiture and creating big prints, and that’s what I been debating if will be worth it on buying the R5, will be my next step which I have my new canon 24-105 f4 great lens for sure.

looks like theyre in the right order since the photo on the right has messed up color which is an R5 trademark. but I agree the one on the left is obv sharper

Has anyone know how much I have to pay when I trade-in my Canon 5D Mark IV to Canon R or Canon RP?
I love the Eye AF Tracking.
I love the small body of RP but it's only 5fps

game-changing for me! I can tilt the screen down and raise my camera over my head to get a higher angle for my shot without having to stand on a stool. With auto eye focus it works great! Far less strain on my right eye after a long shoot :)
