    Tony & Chelsea Northrup test the Canon 5D Mark IV (sdp.io/5D4) against the Canon EOS R5 (sdp.io/R5). How does it compare for photography, portraits, landscapes, image quality, dynamic range, and 4k video? The most important differences are the classic debate between DSLR and mirrorless cameras: things like an optical viewfinder vs an electronic viewfinder and lens sizes. Sensor stabilization and a flip screen make a big difference, too.
    We test the Canon RF 15-35 f/2.8 L, RF 24-70 f/2.8 L IS, and Canon RF 70-200 L IS.

    Been using the 5D Mark IV and there is truly something about the raw nature of this camera never failing that has photographed probably close to 200 weddings on it. It's been dropped several times and still works perfectly. I did find some lag when using the R5 during important things. But the MarkIV on Manual Mode is as close to using an old film camera as it gets. I love it and wouldn't trade it for anything. The eye focus is literally the only thing that I want on the Mark Iv. I wish they could add a firmware update or something.

    I started photography as a hobby back in 2010 or so, with a 600D and a 18-55mm kitlens. Within 6 months I got the EF-S 55-250mm.
    I used that camera A LOT, but decided to go full frame in 2018 with the 6Dm2 with a 25-105mm kitlens. By that time, I also forced myself to only shoot in manual, and also got the Sigma 70-200mm. Amazing set up.
    In the recent months, I was very fortunate to order a R5 with the RF85mm as an incentive workbonus, and recieved my new gear (including the ringed adapter) 2 weeks ago.
    Man, that thing is a beast! Once I had all my buttons customised, the speed of my workflow had increased so much. I love this thing, but have a constant feeling that I’m not worthy :)

      I mean, he not only has a video that is literally about the D850 being the best DSLR ever made (and possibly the swan song to DSLRs), but he has been pretty critical of the 5DmkIV. But he is also not wrong that it has been used by pros everywhere for just about everything. And his previous criticisms were not for it being a bad camera but rather for not being much of an upgrade from the mkIII.

      Best Canon DSLR ever, more appropriate. Nikon bodies give better Image Quality, but Nikon glass is more expensive, and there are a lot of Canon users out there with legacy glass because at the introduction of 5D Mk II, Canon was a lot better choice.

  • @vidsburgh6022
    @vidsburgh6022 Před 3 lety +6

    I was excited about the R5 until I saw that the R6 with 24-105 f4 cost the same as the R5 body, so that seemed a better option. I mostly do events, so 20MP is more than enough and the lower resolution is a bit better in low light conditions. What really matters is the stabilization and new autofocus system, and that’s the same for both. Now I just need to get enough gigs to cover a RF 70-200 2.8...

I messed around with micro-focus adjustments to get the sharpness as close as possible to the LiveView, but when I change subject distance, I don't get sharp shots with the viewfinder. The EVF lag vs OVF is still an issue for me and why I would choose the 1dx3 over the R5. For now my 5dMk4 works great, but seemed a bit dated after shooting with the 1dx3 for a day. I like the R5’s eye tracking features and IBIS and think they should be standard with the 1dx3. Perhaps the rumored R1will include an EVF/OVF hybrid option combining the best features of both cameras.

    Thanks for this, guys. I'm an amateur and I'm about to upgrade from my ageing Canon EOS 6D which I've owned for 9 years and which I really like (generally attached to my 24-105 F4L lens). I'd been considering buying a 5D mk IV to replace it along with a 70-200 F2.8L, which I'd always coveted but I've just noticed that I can buy an R5 and EF adapter for virtually the same money (in the UK). I think that's what I'm going to do and I'll save for some new 'R' glass later, since the R5 does seem like such an upgrade (especially with the new, major firmware update about to land). The EF L lenses were always so highly regarded that I'd thought that there wasn't much room for improvement but your video has shown me otherwise!

    Just the body is a big step back. I own the R6 (R5 is still not available in Germany :( ). The 5D IV is so handy, the dial button easy to reach with the thumb. On the R6/R5 you need both hands to work with the dial. Big step back in my opinion. The 5D body was soooo good. Why the changed it? Bigger body would perhaps give more space for the overheating issue, too. And the buttons also feels not so good on my hands. It reminds me more to the G series rather then semi professional 5 line. Interestingly, no youtuber mentions the small body; is was/be a bit unhappy and will miss those ergonomics.

      Plus the R5 isn’t anywhere near as curvy as the 5D MKIV, I particularly hate the inner side of the grip of the R5, it’s almost at 90 degrees with the front of the body, and so the grip isn’t as curvy as on the 5D MKIV. Cannon should have made the R5 body design like that of the 5D series

  • @jamesjin8839
    @jamesjin8839 Před 3 lety +3

    The new RF lenses might not look apparently much sharper. But what I consistenly observe them comparing to old EF lenses is corner contrast especially when shooting distant subjects.(not compared in this video.) EF lenses tend to give you the traditional SLR hazy/ghosty corner while RF lenses preserve much more contrast and thus appear to be sharper. Couple with extra pixels and a little better resolving capability the images look much better even when you peep. Particularly useful for landscape.
    However the bum of this system currently is exactly what tony mentioned. The increase in price of the bdoy is largely due to all those video features packed in there that many are not really emphasizing. (how many % needs 8k) I'm still waiting for a less video focused, more still mage centric body model to consider any switch.

    Great video. Going through the upgrade process from a 5d Mk3. Your informative video 'sold it' and has reassured me that the R5 is the right choice for an upgrade. I was tossing whether to change systems, but I was worried about my current investment of EF glass. Its great that the R doesn't mean that my EF glass becomes redundant. Sadly our dollar is not good. The investment of the R5 will be well over what I paid for my first car. Oh well that was a long, long time ago now. Time to spoil myself. Keep producing great videos. Any camera in the right hands i.e. a photographer who knows the system they are using and has creative ability will produce amazing images. That is stage one, stage two is post processing to get the maximum out of an image in a style that has impact and reflects something original rather than the everyday snap. Having said that, few of us get there because we fail in one or all of these things. Whatever the camera, it takes time to get familiarity with all the features and settings and this only comes with practice of every feature until you can do it in your sleep. Selecting the appropriate camera settings for the subject is next. Composition is more an art/creative thing but there are basic rules that seem to work. Get the lighting and exposure right. Post processing can take many times longer for each image than it took to take the image in the first place (including the travelling time to the location) and often we fail there, we either don't process enough or we process too much. Only many attempts and tweaks will get you there. If you have a 5D Mk IV and you are producing 1 acceptable image out of a 1000 (like me) then you will provably get 2 out of a 1000 with the D5. Your issue is not with the camera and its technology, it is with you. Practice with the 5D Mk IV until you can honestly say you just can't get a better image of everything you take then you are ready to move on to the R5. If you are where I am right now with my 5D Mk IV .... by that time you will be able to pick up an R5 at KEH for half the price of buying it now.

    Many years ago, the only thing holding mirrorless cameras back, was the auto focus and bad banding issues. The auto focus issues were effectively completely fixed, and the banding issues are almost completely gone. The Dynamic range of the EVFs have also improved greatly to a point where the they can be effectively used for manual mode. Overall, beyond battery life there is no reason to not go with mirrorless.

The only workaround, I’ve found, is shoot video in manual mode with an external recorder...since touch AF still works in manual. You’d think adapter manufacturers would address the AF in video mode issue since I’ve ran into it with 2 adapters while hearing that most people struggle with this. Maybe I just need to be patient, and switch to Sony glass?

    Hello Tony, Canon has a better autofocus than Nikon looks like. After using the Nikon Z7 for three weeks I finally returned it. I used the adapter with my other lenses and the performance was not that great, I tried the IBIS and I was not that impressed, I could get similar results with the D-810 and the lenses I use. Battery doesn't last as long too, so even though I purchased it refurbished I decided it doesn't serve me for what I do. The only thing I like is the screen because it tilts, so I am looking forward for the D-850 instead. The D850 is proved and tested to have a good autofocus and since now I have two XQD cards and a reader I will go for the D850. You and your wife used it quite extensively right? Do you still use it? Or you guys change cameras frequently? Good video.

    As someone who recently got in to photography, I feel like it is important to go through the motion of an older DSLR while learning. I feel like a newbie going straight to a modern and expensive mirrorless would have software doing a lot of the work for them, and they wouldn't learn the core aspects of the tech side of photography. You have to know your depth of field, how your camera and lens handles higher ISO, whereas a mirrorless shows it all realtime so you can see what works and shoot. It is great, which is why they are the best right now, but for learning from scratch I think the older is better.
    Although I'm sure people say the same about going from film to DSLR

      Don't artificially limit yourself. If the tech gets the job done, use it. That's why it's there.
      You can still learn all the other things and apply them for more specific situations.

    The EVF on mirrorless cameras is real easy to get used to. Going back to my DSLR optical viewfinder messed me up a bit if I drifted into autopilot too much.

    So was the record scratch sound at 2:13 because you blurred your license plates in the first shot, but then forgot to blur it in the next shot? In which case, why not just blur it out instead of the audio edit? 😐

    So there are some things that the 5D Mark 4 doesn't have that are available in other DSLR's, namely, the 6D Mark 2 has a flippy screen, and the 90D has 4K video, and the 5Ds has a higher resolution than the R5. Also the 1Dx Mark III has freaking backlit buttons! If there's to be an end to DSLR's there needs to be a "be all, end all" model that takes all that and as much of what's in the R5 as possible and crams it into a holy grail model because no matter what you do, you just can't get it all in one body!

    I like landscape and wildlife shooting.I'm not interested in video work at all. Ive been looking to upgrade to a full size censor camera, possibly mirrorless. I absolutely need an articulating rear screen that is why the Canon 5D mark4 is out. I forgot to mention that I'm presently using a Canon 90D and have lenses. I would prefer to stay with Canon. My question is, what Canon full frame camera would you recumbent?

    It is a nice idea to compare these two cameras (I owned the 5d4, and the R5), but you can’t really conclude anything about what would miss for pros with the 5d4. Just because you compare them on an island in tourist mod. In that contest, sure both cameras are really equal. Would be more interesting with a wedding session. (And the conclusion would be for the R5 I guess)

    It looks like the R5 is going the same way as the EOS R that preceded it - riotous critiquing followed by an almost cult like acceptance and praise for its features. Canon continues to make people walk back their insults with these cameras. On a personal note, I've had the R5 for about a month now and I have yet to feel like it's HUGE step up from the EOS R. I think it's just a matter of shooting with it more.

I use a large f2.8 lens for this and I dont think there are any large fast R lenses? So would need an adapter for my EF 300 f2.8. I need more answers before I can go mirrorless :)

    The message is to upgrade, and I agree since you get newer and better performance. I bought the Canon 1dsmk2 flagship DSLR back in 2005 for $8000 brand new, it's in perfect shape but now worth only $47 if I sell to KEH. So, it's probably better to upgrade more often if you can afford to.
