Tony & Chelsea Northrup test the Canon 5D Mark IV (sdp.io/5D4) against the Canon EOS R5 (sdp.io/R5). How does it compare for photography, portraits, landscapes, image quality, dynamic range, and 4k video? The most important differences are the classic debate between DSLR and mirrorless cameras: things like an optical viewfinder vs an electronic viewfinder and lens sizes. Sensor stabilization and a flip screen make a big difference, too.
We test the Canon RF 15-35 f/2.8 L, RF 24-70 f/2.8 L IS, and Canon RF 70-200 L IS. - Věda a technologie
Been using the 5D Mark IV and there is truly something about the raw nature of this camera never failing that has photographed probably close to 200 weddings on it. It's been dropped several times and still works perfectly. I did find some lag when using the R5 during important things. But the MarkIV on Manual Mode is as close to using an old film camera as it gets. I love it and wouldn't trade it for anything. The eye focus is literally the only thing that I want on the Mark Iv. I wish they could add a firmware update or something.
I’ve owned the 5D Mark IV, the D850 and the R5, and honestly, the R5 is the most enjoyable and best camera I’ve ever owned!
I have a wedding a head of me. My bride is in Afghanistan and there is electricity issue as well. Which camera and lens should I buy? Please choose the camera which carries almost the flagship quality with lowest price. It would be a great help.
Thanks
5D mark 3
It still blows my mind that the R5 and A7SIII can literally see in the dark!
Wow!! Shoot in the dark!!! 😳 why would you do this??!!! Are you a private investigator?!
@@ccmassis lol no, just an astronomer who struggles to film astronomy content in the dark :)
Kool for filmmaking. I suppose if you wanna shoot stills in low light but hey it's not gonna set your creativity back.
You blurred your license plates in the garage shot but not the following shots
I thought the same thing! 🤣
Cool story
Lol I said the same one gave up
Tony and Chelsea, Thank you for all the effort you put into your videos. They are extremely well done and informative. You are both very generous with your knowledge. I really appreciate it. I have learned a lot from watching your videos and thank you very much. Tony - you have an incisive mind and are kind enough to share your in depth knowledge of the math of photography. Chelsea you are so very charming and get what many women struggle with - thank you:)) You are lovely people - both of you. Thank you so very much.
Thanks for making the effort to compare these two cameras in a real world situation. Some of us do appreciate your insights and the work involved in doing this. Thanks again.
I started photography as a hobby back in 2010 or so, with a 600D and a 18-55mm kitlens. Within 6 months I got the EF-S 55-250mm.
I used that camera A LOT, but decided to go full frame in 2018 with the 6Dm2 with a 25-105mm kitlens. By that time, I also forced myself to only shoot in manual, and also got the Sigma 70-200mm. Amazing set up.
In the recent months, I was very fortunate to order a R5 with the RF85mm as an incentive workbonus, and recieved my new gear (including the ringed adapter) 2 weeks ago.
Man, that thing is a beast! Once I had all my buttons customised, the speed of my workflow had increased so much. I love this thing, but have a constant feeling that I’m not worthy :)
Great comparison. I liked the format. You two are always exceptionally thorough. Thanks!
You sound more positive about the 5Div in this video than you did when it first came out! I'm looking forward to watching DSLR prices continue to dive with the wake of the mirrorless transition.
Hahah great point. The 5D IV got lambasted by CZcamsrs (including Tony) when it came out . Now people look back on it fondly. I had it and the image quality was the best of any camera I ever used (much better than even the R which exhibited shadow banding - something Tony pointed out in the R review)
I’ve come to love the videos you guys make together. Thanks for the fun and informative videos. By the way, which brand of strap is on that R5 you’re shooting with, Chelsea?
Tony - "The 5D IV is possibly the greatest DSLR ever made"
D850 - "Am I a joke to you?" :D
You took it off my mouth.
I am a Canon guy. The D850 smokes the 5D Mark IV.
I mean, he not only has a video that is literally about the D850 being the best DSLR ever made (and possibly the swan song to DSLRs), but he has been pretty critical of the 5DmkIV. But he is also not wrong that it has been used by pros everywhere for just about everything. And his previous criticisms were not for it being a bad camera but rather for not being much of an upgrade from the mkIII.
But it sucks in live view with dual autofocus.
Best Canon DSLR ever, more appropriate. Nikon bodies give better Image Quality, but Nikon glass is more expensive, and there are a lot of Canon users out there with legacy glass because at the introduction of 5D Mk II, Canon was a lot better choice.
I was excited about the R5 until I saw that the R6 with 24-105 f4 cost the same as the R5 body, so that seemed a better option. I mostly do events, so 20MP is more than enough and the lower resolution is a bit better in low light conditions. What really matters is the stabilization and new autofocus system, and that’s the same for both. Now I just need to get enough gigs to cover a RF 70-200 2.8...
I thought the background was in focus at 6:09 as well, and it is, but he doesn’t have it on “continuous AF” so he has to press the back button to focus every time he wants it to re-focus. The grey box will turn green when it’s in focus.
blurs license plates*
shows them in the next clip*
lmao
So true 😂😂
I'm sure Tony was just practicing pixelating in case he needs to do it at some future date.
I upgraded from a 7D to a 5D Mk IV since I had autofocus issues. I still find that the focus worse when using the viewfinder than when using the LiveView. I messed around with micro-focus adjustments to get the sharpness as close as possible to the LiveView, but when I change subject distance, I don't get sharp shots with the viewfinder. Did you ever experience something similar with the 5D Mk IV?
Man, as someone who’s used mirrorless for a long time now it’s hilarious to see all the benefits we talked about for years finally being accepted. I remember so many people arguing when the 5div came out that most of the benefits listed for mirrorless in this video were for amateurs and not “pro”
I have switched from EOS 7D mark II to EOS R5 and I still use all my EF L lenses without any issue, in fact the seem to perform better on the R5
I will skip r5 this year will keep my 5d mark iv ,I will wait for next version of r5👍
And the next version just came out
R5 II is out... what are you waiting for
Love your video. As always well done and informative.
I really enjoyed this comparison. I'm in the process of moving from SLR to Mirrorless (thanks Chelsea for your recent Sony-to-R5 video). Equipment ordered and just waiting for supply to catch up with demand.
Tony, Chelsea I personally enjoyed the content that you presented in this video, so Thank You for what you do!!!
Thanks for another great video. Where would the EOS R sit between these two cameras for a stills photographer (no video)? Would it provide some of the advantages of the the R5 without breaking the bank? Would image quality (especially with RF lenses) be as good (better?) than the Mark IV? Thanks.
The EVF lag vs OVF is still an issue for me and why I would choose the 1dx3 over the R5. For now my 5dMk4 works great, but seemed a bit dated after shooting with the 1dx3 for a day. I like the R5’s eye tracking features and IBIS and think they should be standard with the 1dx3. Perhaps the rumored R1will include an EVF/OVF hybrid option combining the best features of both cameras.
That gear closet is pretty impressive! When do we get a walkthrough of that?
Lol maybe when I clean it
Great video. Currently use a 5Dmk4 as my main and Thinking of switching to an R5 main with 5DMk4 as second. I Do video and photography simultaneously. Your video was one of the best ive seen and going to try out an R5 this week
The lowlight comparison between the R5 and 5D Mark IV I'm literally laughing. The difference in camera settings 😂😂😂.
Which one is better?
I would definitely bet on the R5 but that comparison didn't really show much at all given the settings difference in that situation.
Thanks for this, guys. I'm an amateur and I'm about to upgrade from my ageing Canon EOS 6D which I've owned for 9 years and which I really like (generally attached to my 24-105 F4L lens). I'd been considering buying a 5D mk IV to replace it along with a 70-200 F2.8L, which I'd always coveted but I've just noticed that I can buy an R5 and EF adapter for virtually the same money (in the UK). I think that's what I'm going to do and I'll save for some new 'R' glass later, since the R5 does seem like such an upgrade (especially with the new, major firmware update about to land). The EF L lenses were always so highly regarded that I'd thought that there wasn't much room for improvement but your video has shown me otherwise!
I’ve had the R5 for 2 months and I used to use the 5DM4 for 3 years before that. These 2 months have been so much more easy for me than using the 5DM4. The R5 is so much more forgiving! Sometimes indoor I don’t even have to use flash because I can edit the shadows without getting grain. Never looking back. :)
you should try iPhone 13 pro - it's "so much more forgiving" than R5!
My approach is to add light whenever possible. With how good cameras are these days, a little light added makes a world of difference.
Where is your R5 tutorial located? Thanks for the comparison.
Oh wow that's useful to know the file size are about the same! How do they manage a 45MP pic to have the same size as the 30MP on the old Mk4?
Lossless compression my friend...
The colours on the 5D IV video were amazing! Were the 5D and R5 both using the same profiles?
Thanks for the review of r5. I am tempted to get the camera. Even r6 looks good. I’m a beginner with t6i. Do you recommend the r5 or r6 for beginners? I feel like I won’t be buying another body for at least 5 years if I buy either one. My main focus is landscape and possibly wild life down the road.
The only question I have about mirrorless is: "How much delay from the sensor to the EVF?" Is it a problem when shooting action like sports? Is what you see (in the EVF) the same as the shot you record?
I’d like to know if it’s worth it to switch from a D850 (seeing as this is the SLR you guys still use as far as I know) to a mirrorless - either a Canon R5 or Sony A7RIV. I get this video is for canon shooters, but I don’t feel married to any one brand as I can sell my body and most of my lenses in any system pretty easily.
I am new to photography, at the beginning of this year the company that I work with got us a DSLR camera, and just few weeks ago I got myself a mirrorless camera, the Canon M50, I have noticed the difference in the few finder as if the mirrorless make things looks easier
love the video. but i don't know what happened to your audio lately it really sucks with headset on almost unwatchable. hope you'll find a fix. a lot of the time double audio as well
Just the body is a big step back. I own the R6 (R5 is still not available in Germany :( ). The 5D IV is so handy, the dial button easy to reach with the thumb. On the R6/R5 you need both hands to work with the dial. Big step back in my opinion. The 5D body was soooo good. Why the changed it? Bigger body would perhaps give more space for the overheating issue, too. And the buttons also feels not so good on my hands. It reminds me more to the G series rather then semi professional 5 line. Interestingly, no youtuber mentions the small body; is was/be a bit unhappy and will miss those ergonomics.
Plus the R5 isn’t anywhere near as curvy as the 5D MKIV, I particularly hate the inner side of the grip of the R5, it’s almost at 90 degrees with the front of the body, and so the grip isn’t as curvy as on the 5D MKIV. Cannon should have made the R5 body design like that of the 5D series
The new RF lenses might not look apparently much sharper. But what I consistenly observe them comparing to old EF lenses is corner contrast especially when shooting distant subjects.(not compared in this video.) EF lenses tend to give you the traditional SLR hazy/ghosty corner while RF lenses preserve much more contrast and thus appear to be sharper. Couple with extra pixels and a little better resolving capability the images look much better even when you peep. Particularly useful for landscape.
However the bum of this system currently is exactly what tony mentioned. The increase in price of the bdoy is largely due to all those video features packed in there that many are not really emphasizing. (how many % needs 8k) I'm still waiting for a less video focused, more still mage centric body model to consider any switch.
You're persuading me. I'm currently still using 5DII with L and legacy glass. The upgrade isn't a "need" so much as an "itch". You are fast forwarding me from 5DII which I'll keep to R5: thanks!!
Could you do the R6 vs 5DMarkIII? Im thinking of upgrading to mirrorless but Im curious if theres a big difference? I usually shoot through liveview because my hobby is automotive photography and the focus on the 5D is pretty slow. Curious if the R6 fixed it? Thank you, keep up the content!
Great video. Going through the upgrade process from a 5d Mk3. Your informative video 'sold it' and has reassured me that the R5 is the right choice for an upgrade. I was tossing whether to change systems, but I was worried about my current investment of EF glass. Its great that the R doesn't mean that my EF glass becomes redundant. Sadly our dollar is not good. The investment of the R5 will be well over what I paid for my first car. Oh well that was a long, long time ago now. Time to spoil myself. Keep producing great videos. I really enjoy them as they are not bias or influenced by any particular brand. Cheers from down under.
Haha, my 5D3 is still serving me well, but... Maybe Santa will come in clutch 🤣
Any camera in the right hands i.e. a photographer who knows the system they are using and has creative ability will produce amazing images. That is stage one, stage two is post processing to get the maximum out of an image in a style that has impact and reflects something original rather than the everyday snap. Having said that, few of us get there because we fail in one or all of these things. Whatever the camera, it takes time to get familiarity with all the features and settings and this only comes with practice of every feature until you can do it in your sleep. Selecting the appropriate camera settings for the subject is next. Composition is more an art/creative thing but there are basic rules that seem to work. Get the lighting and exposure right. Post processing can take many times longer for each image than it took to take the image in the first place (including the travelling time to the location) and often we fail there, we either don't process enough or we process too much. Only many attempts and tweaks will get you there. If you have a 5D Mk IV and you are producing 1 acceptable image out of a 1000 (like me) then you will provably get 2 out of a 1000 with the D5. Your issue is not with the camera and its technology, it is with you. Practice with the 5D Mk IV until you can honestly say you just can't get a better image of everything you take then you are ready to move on to the R5. If you are where I am right now with my 5D Mk IV .... by that time you will be able to pick up an R5 at KEH for half the price of buying it now.
I LOVE this honest and true answer. 📸🙌🏼
So thankful you guys are comparing old Vs new lenses. If I did upgrade I would probably get R6 currently only have the 400mm 5.6, 50mm 1.8 and 24mm 2.8. I would look to maybe get the ef 24-70 2.8 l MK2 so I can afford and not break bank to much.
Hey C&T, thanks for the comparison. I have a specific question about the EV vs AV. as a 5dm4 primarily underwater photographer w/housing, do you think the R5 EV will be fast enough for UW photography? Including 100mm macro? Thanks. J.
When Chelsea says its Got EVF in the beginning, then that clip looks like it back focussed by a huge margin...
please correct me..
I’d be curious on a side by side comparison with the 1Dx miii and the R5. Particularly action shots...
you guys are amazing! thanks for this video
Hi Toni and Chelsea, I really enjoy your videos. Can you make a comparison of the R6 and the 6dMii? Especially out of camera picture quality would be interesting. Thank!
Tony, great video. Thank you. What is that behind you at 0:10 ? It looks like a mini frig, but I think I see lenses in it.
Many years ago, the only thing holding mirrorless cameras back, was the auto focus and bad banding issues. The auto focus issues were effectively completely fixed, and the banding issues are almost completely gone. The Dynamic range of the EVFs have also improved greatly to a point where the they can be effectively used for manual mode. Overall, beyond battery life there is no reason to not go with mirrorless.
Chelsea was recording sound in the toilet at home, she probably forgot to turn on the microphone outdoors
Yeah that audio was terrible
@@BassPlayerAvailable It could have been a deliberate act to advertise wireless headphones and microphones later
They give Sound advice in the video however it does makes you think twice when they can't get sound right and you're trying to teach other and give advise lol
6:10 how is it that when the eye-auto-focus is on, Chelsea is blurry and what's in focus are the rocks far behind her?
Yeah, you're right...why did they choose that clip? The same occurs at 5:38 when it's focused on the tree behind her.
YES!!!!!!! I got so excited when Chelsea busted out the RF 70-200 because I just bought this lens, got it Thursday, and am mindblown by it! 😅
Shoot. 1.75x crop @ 4K with 5D? I’ve been researching to possibly switch from a Sony A73 body to Canon since I have Canon lenses, and AF doesn’t work with video. The only workaround, I’ve found, is shoot video in manual mode with an external recorder...since touch AF still works in manual. You’d think adapter manufacturers would address the AF in video mode issue since I’ve ran into it with 2 adapters while hearing that most people struggle with this. Maybe I just need to be patient, and switch to Sony glass?
Nice video !
Please do an "electronic shutter war" video where you compare the electronic shutters of the R5/R6/RIV against the A9/A9-II :)
Please someone help me choose a good camera for my wedding. It should be a budget and it should have a long battery and best video. Plz some tell...
Great review, thank you. As an old boomer, I can’t drag myself away from the large optical viewfinder of an SLR/full frame DSLR.
Hands on the steering wheel, Tony.
It Could be that his car has lane keep assist ... or some other level of autonomy that doesn’t require both hands on the wheel under all conditions
@@dylancoppo Electric car.
After I finished watching your video, only 1 thing came to my mind ... Thank you 🙂🙏
User of Canon 1dx Mark iii and Nikon D5 pro dslr cameras. I cover areas from Action, sports & wildlife environments both in daytime and nighttime with climatic differences come into play.
I have tried both mirrorless variants from Canon and Nikon in similar environments but wasn't impressed with the mirrorless cameras regards to tracking, focusing in low light and robustness of either Canon or Nikon.
Mirrorless cameras don't feel as sturdy enough to use on a daily basis for my needs. I will only switch if a Pro Mirrorless Canon 1dx Mark iii and Nikon D6 cameras become available otherwise I will stay with the Dslr cameras for my work.
Hello Tony, Canon has a better autofocus than Nikon looks like. After using the Nikon Z7 for three weeks I finally returned it. I used the adapter with my other lenses and the performance was not that great, I tried the IBIS and I was not that impressed, I could get similar results with the D-810 and the lenses I use. Battery doesn't last as long too, so even though I purchased it refurbished I decided it doesn't serve me for what I do. The only thing I like is the screen because it tilts, so I am looking forward for the D-850 instead. The D850 is proved and tested to have a good autofocus and since now I have two XQD cards and a reader I will go for the D850. You and your wife used it quite extensively right? Do you still use it? Or you guys change cameras frequently? Good video.
As someone who recently got in to photography, I feel like it is important to go through the motion of an older DSLR while learning. I feel like a newbie going straight to a modern and expensive mirrorless would have software doing a lot of the work for them, and they wouldn't learn the core aspects of the tech side of photography. You have to know your depth of field, how your camera and lens handles higher ISO, whereas a mirrorless shows it all realtime so you can see what works and shoot. It is great, which is why they are the best right now, but for learning from scratch I think the older is better.
Although I'm sure people say the same about going from film to DSLR
Don't artificially limit yourself. If the tech gets the job done, use it. That's why it's there.
You can still learn all the other things and apply them for more specific situations.
The EVF on mirrorless cameras is real easy to get used to. Going back to my DSLR optical viewfinder messed me up a bit if I drifted into autopilot too much.
Is the R5 any better in low light as I do concert work?
Just curious, which camera and lenses did you use to shot this video?
Excellent video with good information and presentation..
So was the record scratch sound at 2:13 because you blurred your license plates in the first shot, but then forgot to blur it in the next shot? In which case, why not just blur it out instead of the audio edit? 😐
You told me what I wanted to know. Thank you.
One of these days I’ll upgrade to the R5 from 6D Mark II. Thanks heaps for the great video!
I'm in the same boat, R6 looks like a much better value for "enthusiasts" versus professionals.
What about Autofocus? whats the 5D MK IV like for BIF.....is the R5 much better???
Great comparisons. That island looked very interesting.
Amazing video! So informative
The canon 7dmk2 . When you press the af button and iv seen it on 5dmk3 . The focusing points ligh but the vf also gose red yet canon uk .dont know how to solve it
How well does the R5 and adapter work with Tamron lenses? I have a mix of Canon and Tamron, but I use the Tamron lenses most often.
Tried third party glass on nikon mirrorless with their adapter, and that was a disaster. Can't imagine its going to be much better on canon.
So there are some things that the 5D Mark 4 doesn't have that are available in other DSLR's, namely, the 6D Mark 2 has a flippy screen, and the 90D has 4K video, and the 5Ds has a higher resolution than the R5. Also the 1Dx Mark III has freaking backlit buttons! If there's to be an end to DSLR's there needs to be a "be all, end all" model that takes all that and as much of what's in the R5 as possible and crams it into a holy grail model because no matter what you do, you just can't get it all in one body!
Nice eye tracking @5:39 maybe next time we can get eye focus
My electronic view finder is not seeing in the dark? What am I missing.
I like landscape and wildlife shooting.I'm not interested in video work at all. Ive been looking to upgrade to a full size censor camera, possibly mirrorless. I absolutely need an articulating rear screen that is why the Canon 5D mark4 is out. I forgot to mention that I'm presently using a Canon 90D and have lenses. I would prefer to stay with Canon. My question is, what Canon full frame camera would you recumbent?
Isn t the battery life on the mirror less really bad compared to the R5?
Tony, off topic question. Nice camera pack. Care to share what it is?
It is a nice idea to compare these two cameras (I owned the 5d4, and the R5), but you can’t really conclude anything about what would miss for pros with the 5d4. Just because you compare them on an island in tourist mod. In that contest, sure both cameras are really equal. Would be more interesting with a wedding session. (And the conclusion would be for the R5 I guess)
I have TWO R5 with the 85 f1.2 L RF & 24-70 f2.0 L RF.....and it was the BEST decision! This camera is SO good and a huge upgrade to my old 5D3!
Can we even get one now? Also, in another video you were pretty vocal in the 50mm f/1.2 for portraits over the 85mm. Still feel that way? I'm getting ready to jump on the 50 over the 85. Cheaper, too...
It looks like the R5 is going the same way as the EOS R that preceded it - riotous critiquing followed by an almost cult like acceptance and praise for its features. Canon continues to make people walk back their insults with these cameras. On a personal note, I've had the R5 for about a month now and I have yet to feel like it's HUGE step up from the EOS R. I think it's just a matter of shooting with it more.
as someone who's shot sports on both the R and R5, the R5 is such a huge improvement, not to mention the overall design of the body is so much more natural feeling and has a back dial
Thanks for another awesome video guys 👍🏼
Thank you for the kind words 💕
Best review of the R5 I have seen on CZcams, thanks.
I upgraded from a 5D III to a R5 and I L O V E it!
What happened to the sound it sounded like your getting audio from a tv speaker 🔊🤔
Great video as always but u can not knock the 85 f1.2 lense at all
You noticed that the camera found the eye
But really really not in focus
The background is in focus
That new 8 series of yours looks absolutely mint! Beautifully specced.
Sounds like you can afford an R5. Toyota driver here, R6 looks better value to me!
Thank you, Easton! I know you’ve seen your fair share of gorgeous cars.
I shoot Friday Night football under not so great lights. Can you put the R5 through the test in this low light fast action conditions? I use a large f2.8 lens for this and I dont think there are any large fast R lenses? So would need an adapter for my EF 300 f2.8. I need more answers before I can go mirrorless :)
Can an experienced Canon user tell me which camera should i choose for portraits, landscapes and wildlife? Canon 5Ds or Canon 5D IV? Nice review anyway.
If you plan to be pushing the ISOs and take 7fps 5DIV if you have the light and click at a 3fps pace the 5Ds.
How's the DR compared?
The message is to upgrade, and I agree since you get newer and better performance. I bought the Canon 1dsmk2 flagship DSLR back in 2005 for $8000 brand new, it's in perfect shape but now worth only $47 if I sell to KEH. So, it's probably better to upgrade more often if you can afford to.
The R5 video handheld footage looks great.
Yeah the stabilization is amazing
Question: What features of these cameras will trickle down to a Rebel?
None. Canon are done with DSLR development. They want you to get an RP or whatever replaces it as its lowest-priced mirrorless FF model.
Great videos as always guys. I have another 50-100k shutter actuations on my 5d Mkiii before getting a new camera! Even then, it will probably be another DSLR purchased from some museum... cannot afford the new cameras.
What's with the weird shuddering of the image in the EVF on the R5 at 7:38 when the shutter is firing?
