Granny felt lonely. Her new backyard home has her relatives knocking

- Alice Marozas had been living alone in a 5-bedroom home since the death of her husband 7 years earlier when her daughter suggested that instead of finding a retirement community, she move into a prefab in their Los Angeles backyard. Alice had loved growing up in a multi-generational household (after her mother had taken in her 7 younger, orphaned siblings) loved the idea of being closer to her daughter and grandkids, but she didn’t want to be a burden.
Claudia and her husband Chris Buchanan wanted to preserve the backyard as it was, including their tall hedge and vegetable garden, so they found a panelized prefab so the “granny unit” could be hand-carried in pieces through the 3-foot gap in their hedge. Since California had recently passed new ADU (Accessory Dwelling Unit) legislation, they could place the prefab right up next to the lot line, instead of adhering to an older 15-foot setback requirement. This left the garden and hedge untouched..
Once a foundation was laid, it felt like the home went up in a day, explains Chris, who filmed the home one evening mid-build when the wall panels had been slid together, but the ceiling panels still hadn’t been snapped into place and the internal LEGO-like structure is evident (HVAC hidden behind ceiling panels and track lighting that takes advantage of the gaps between panels).
Most mornings Chris and Claudia cross the hedge so he can tend the garden and she can have coffee with on her mom’s porch. And in the afternoon, their youngest son crosses to visit grandma’s house for a snack or to watch sports.

Multi generational living is the way to go. We’ve been sold a lie in The USA about the importance of being independent and standing on your own. Family living together gives everyone purpose, connection, support and eases financial burden. I hope we trend back towards it as a country.
Agreed
💯
Early 30’s here also in CA. Living with MIL in the house. It’s so nice having and extra hand with helping out with our daughter and the house, and the relationship they build every day is such a joy to see flourish. I keep advocating it with my cousins and friends, it really is a plus more than anything. Trying to make it work here in the bay area without some high end tech job just doesn’t make sense anymore.
"Let us turn to the past: that will be progress." (Giuseppe Verdi)
Sadly this is the norm in most countries now. It really is a better way of living.
How fortunate she is to have such a wonderful family and grandchildren. The house, situated near her loved ones, is a stunning example of modern architecture.
Sooo... This wasn't a financial thing? I mean inheritance tax is high. Like he said - it was a fraction of the price of buy a condo nearby. There is a rental agreement he mentioned. She owned a 5 bedroom house prior. She seems to have a lot of people tell you her thoughts in this video.
Absolutely agree😊. What a beautiful space♥️
The grandson seems like quite the treasure.
Can I ask whether your avatar here checks with reality? If so, we've read you over the years.
Great to see a loving family- grandmother created
My son and daughter in law built a shop on their rural property and decided to install an efficiency apartment in the shop building. They asked me to come live with them. Of course I said yes and have been living here since. I have dogs, grandkids and home cooked meals whenever I want them. And my privacy when I need it. Life is good. I’m a very fortunate man.
This is amazing!
You are blessed indeed! I'm happy for you 👍🏼
So wonderful for her teenage grandson to have a special place to hang out with his grandmother and exposure to this really cool project. Enriching to learn from grandparents.
I feel sorry for her
@@jamesjrosswhy? Sounds like she had options.
This is Win-Win on so many levels, not least the increased family interactions. So impressive what they're doing with panelized construction these days! It was a treat to see her beautiful paintings (she's so talented!), and I love that they prioritized the lemon tree and the garden with guacamole fixings. ; - D Kudos and thank you for sharing!
I love the fact that they intentionally designed to save their trees! And it definitely isn't "silly" to say you use every lemon from your tree. What a wonderful setup for everyone. 🍋
They did a fantastic job with this. What a sweet family.
I love this.! It is a win/win arrangement. Inter generational living . Making memories, sharing knowledge and wisdom and assisting one another and helping each other financially! 👏🏿
Beautiful home and family. It's great that the matriarch can live and be close to family! This home is so open and airy and construction looks like a breeze!
This was a beautiful episode. Grandma in the backyard. Perfection.
Love it. I used to swing by my grandmother almost every day when she was still alive, and today I miss her everyday. Didn't need a nice house for me to do so, but either way it's wonderful that those teen boys spend more time with their grandmother.
This place is magnificent! How beautiful that Grandma lives so close to her family. What an amazing artist she is! This is perfection. 💝✨🌎🌞💯
This was so wonderful to watch. Great build, with lemon tree and the garden all intact. Everyone is so involved and productive in their own space with shared time as a multi-generational family. I am from the Westside and loved their principles of living space.
It's interesting how at a certain point in our lives you're reminded that the most important things in life aren't "things", but people. It's great that she has such a welcoming and loving family to support and surround herself with.
Out of everything, I am VERY impressed with the young man that loves his grandma and respect her. Bravooooo
Having family together, how nice. Minimalism embraced as well.
It's great that these type structures are allowed.
I'd imagine many families are doing this.
It's a win win for everyone.
Beautiful place and surprisingly large..
Not allowed everywhere...In the Netherlands lot of hassle and as soon the parent is deceased, the house must be broken down! (but still complaining about the lack of housing....
@@chloeuntrau4588 ..interesting
This could be the reality in so many more places. Regulations are inflating home prices and preventing creative solutions. Glad the made some change in CA to allow this
Having grandmother in the yard is how the grandson is gonna learn to cook the really good dishes. Because that kitchen needs to be used!
My parents are in their 80's and 90's. They moved in with my son and me ten years ago. They get to see their grandson every day. It has made a huge difference in their quality-of-life.
I'm a bit of a minimalist. I love this home.
This is the kind of video I love from Kirsten & Co...interesting architecture combined with ecologically- sound design and innovative problem-solving ways to live. Bravo!
Beautiful modern home. Perfect for her to have her own space but be so close to be involved with all the family life. Loved the old photos!
I can really relate to this family. I studied at SAIC and lived in Chicago for a few years. I haven't painted for awhile but definitely plan on painting again when I retire. My years in Chicago were life changing. I just moved into a house on acreage and designed it to accommodate our multigenerational family. I feel so blessed being able to watch sunsets every evening with my 80 yo mom on our screened porch. We have stunning views overlooking rolling hills and woods. Come spring my raised beds are going up and the chicken coop will be built. Life feels very complete :)
This house is so stunning - it's the nicest ADU I've ever seen. But- this 'granny' is the most interesting subject I have ever seen on this channel. She has so much energy and experience as well as I'm sure a ton of surprises, that I didn't want this episode to end. I just want to listen to her talk over a Pimms cocktail 😂 🤗
This is awesome! What a beautiful living arrangement, both aesthetically and in terms of fostering closeness among family members ❤
How sweet that the family wanted her to be close to them.
Wow, that is so amazing to see. Her grandson is a precious young Man.
Working on building an entire house like that right now. Really nice already and I'm still watching.
how lovely, very good arrangement.
A great solution for the entire fsmiky. Beautifully done.
I 💜💜💜 this! So happy 4 the whole fam! I would "live" 4 a spacious & smart place of my own like that. Enjoy a lot of great yrs there. 🤗💜✝️
Wow, I was expecting a price point significantly lower than what I found on their website. This is definitely big city pricing. Wish there was an option that is country pricing that isn't a shed.
Purely stunning house and beautiful yard, garden space. I wouldn't have given up the lemon tree either. Alice was drop-dead gorgeous as a young woman. She's still beautiful. Diane in NC
What a perfect place for such a talented artist. My grandparents were an important part of my life because they lived so close; no doubt, the grandchildren are benefiting from his close relationship with his grandmother.
I love architecture and this is by far the most amazing and beautiful house I’ve seen in a long time.❤
Wonderful arrangement for all concerned. What a cool grandmother to have living so close!
Yeah bet the son in law loves it $$$$$$$$ 5 bed property sold and charging her rent. Not letting her speak was a nice touch.
I think it was a wise decision to choose such a simple modular home construction. Seems to suit the grandmother very well.
The power of family!
yeah POWER! Selling her 5 bed property and using the money to increase the value of their own then charged her rent - POWER! (also speaking for her while she was in the room was a real POWER move).
Wow how great is that, and such a wonderful opportunity for the whole family to be able to spend all that time together 😊
This made my day. How fabulous is this? Amazing. Thank you!
This pure love and happiness and closeness.
Such a lovely home. We need more laws like this so that people can have affordable housing that's more efficient and be near family! I ant say how much I LOVED THE VIDEO AND DIALOGUE.
Love the aesthetic of the home. And the high hedge does provide a lot separation and privacy between the two homes. It's wonderful that they are able to provide this space that allows for multigenerational living.
Love this! Wish I could do this with my parents
Beautiful family! Thank you Kirsten for making a gem of a video.
Wonderful family
So beautiful you deserve this, just have me wondering if I had money I would build something like this for my mom🙏🏽 may the Lord continue to bless you and your family & your grandson is so adorable and amazing he spends so much time with Grandma I love this 🙏🏽💕🙏🏽 reminds me of hearing my mom wishing for her grandchildren to call let alone to visit her 😞 something like this would be great ❤️😍❤️ blessing to you all🙏🏽
Having serious flashbacks to my youth. My Chicago grandma, named Alice, lived with us in a unit in the backyard. I saw her everyday for my entire life until she passed when I was about that kid's age. She cooked for me, we watched tv together, she was my second mom. Tears of fond remembrance. Thanks for sharing this. Alice's house is gorgeous and this arrangement is wonderful.
What a loving family. 💙 Thanks Kirsten... This was wonderful.
Love everything about this house and family.
Love the sleek modern design & location for Granny! The shadows on drawn shades nice! Being a granny myself I would love this if I was alone.
Seems a solution that brings family, happily, together. I like that
Great looking place. This arrangement is a win for families and communities. I am surprised that new construction in LA doesn't have rooftop solar by default though.
I would’ve loved having my grandma that close. What a lovely way to use your yard space. Love the modern design and keeping those fruit trees was such a bonus. ❤
I really wish the urban planning laws in the UK start to offer what LA is offering - such a necessary tool of many to solve the same housing crisis we all seem to be facing. Added to that it is such a creative way to get families living together again and to support an ageing population. A win-win!
Multi generational…such a beautiful family! Thank you for sharing & thank them for opening up their home! Makes me see the kind of grandma I want to be! Your channel constantly challenges me…my thinking & my perspective…thank you!!!
Talk care of Grandma 🥰 I remember watching the Lakers with my Granny.
It’s perfect and what a lovely family!
I love this place. It's got great vibes. Peace ❤❤
Really well done adu, the glass walls letting in the greenery is such a great way to bring in light and color. Although wonder they didnt demlolish the garage to create a larger footprint or more options.
I love this house, so clean and modern.
Beautiful pre-fab, and lovely family. It’s a good life for all.
It's wonderful that the idea of intergenerational living is being realized in ... western societies! I always got the sense that what was common in the Mediterranean countries, the Middle East, the Latin American countries, was not approved in the West!
Ideal outcome, ticks every box!❤
What a cool house for retirement! It feels larger than 900 sq ft. I would love to have something like that for my parents.
I love this house, it looks so spacious because it isn't filled with clutter and the white and wood look so good, just the style that I love.
Grandma was lovely back in the day
Lovely family!
The favorite grandson! 🥰
Fabulous home
Saving the fruit trees is the right thing to do.
What a workable solution for the whole family, garden, chickens, & lemon tree. Instead of isolation, you built connection.
this is so beautiful! so happy for her
Well done. Good job..I like your video. Good luck
Oh my goodness!!!! I so love that it is gorgeous. I wish I had one now. I love all the windows. And all the light coming in. Much love to you all. ❣️🌺💖
Very impressive dwelling. What a nice family.
Gorgeous and smart property! Love the original home and the ADU and want to see what happens with the property over time! ❤❤❤
Wow... Beautiful home.
😊
Great home ! Love it ! 😊 ❤
I love sperate or even attached living for different families or family members that way each has their own house and can be private when they want.
Really fantastic this house. I don't know how it is with heating and other technical matters.
It's beautiful in its simplicity, Alice is an amazing soul.
I wish Alice good health.
PS. I lack information about the company that made this panel house / name of the technology.
I grew up with my grandparents. This is nice for them all.
Always an enlightening show
Enchanting!
enriching
Grandma's new home is really nice and modern. The family should tear down the old garage and put another new unit home there. Maybe the grandson can live there since he likes Grandma's house so much 😊
What a happy old lady, she lives in her garden not far from her loved ones
Unique and awesome!
I love, love, love the modern home behind the farm house. That would be perfect for me. It has simple clean edges. I probably would do a different color palette. But that's the house I need/want.
Very, very nice!
If you don't design your own life plan, chances are you'll fall into someone else's plan. And guess what they have planned for you? Not much.
Yes it's a sink or swim situation , you must dive deep into it 🧜♂️🧜♀️🧜
Now This Is Pretty Good!
Build on the site, Interior layout great.
Reminds me of Jean Prouvé's Demountable House's
Thats the way to live. ❤
900 square feet so definitely not a tiny home but it is beautiful. Love the tall ceilings, huge glass panels/walls. Love the bright white. The only few changes I would have changed.
1) 3' off the slab for crawl space
2) Covered deck for shade
3) half of the deck would also be screened in for year-round bug free use.
4) Electric fireplaces in living and bedrooms
5) steps on the outside that led to a deck on top of house with half covered and half screened in
6) outside firepit
7) ceiling fans to circulate air
8) with 900 square feet you can easily have 3 bedroom 1 bath that I would have a HUGE shower, and a jetted free-standing tub
9) instead of having 3 bedrooms I would have 1 master bedroom
10) 1 study
11) 1 laundry/linen/pantry/utility room
This is not a tiny home. This is a small house.😊
We managed to find a house from the 60s which had a large extension built in the early aughts, almost two houses conjoined by a kitchen, totally private and complete living spaces for our Mum and Dad in their late 80s. We can be together or apart as need or preference dictates. They are healthy and happy, best decision we ever made.
I love it. I have an adu in my yard but theirs is so spacious.
I want one. I love the house.❤❤❤
I love this so much ❤
It is a full home. The house I grew up in was smaller than 900 sq feet with the four of us and pets.
910 SF is not a tiny home. It's bigger than my own house!
