  • Overnight at Flock House Omaha - Old Market
Rain Chain is a mini-project within the Palimpsest project at Flock House Omaha at the Bemis Center for Contemporary Arts in Omaha, NE.
The Palimpsest project is led by Cynthia Gehrie who was resident at the Flock House Omaha - Old Market from August 6 - 16, 2014. During the project, volunteers in Community Supported Agriculture (CSA) from Iowana Farm in Crescent, Iowa, joined to dream ways of integrating nature into urban life, and envision urban agriculture as an urban lifestyle.
Octavia Butler, a teacher at Gomez Heritage elementary school in south Omaha, dreamed the rain chain as a model to help her students engage in water conservation studies. With her sister, Kailah Butler, they created a rain chain integrated into the Flock House, using terra cotta pots, a chain and hooks to secure the pots, and a bird bath for containment.
They painted the terra cotta pots all day on August 9, 2014, focusing on Flock House as a theme and drawing with soft pastels.
Kailah and her fiancé Ryan Ratigan spent the night in the Flock House to test out their dream of living a more sustainable life style with a smaller footprint and less “stuff.”
The following day, Ryan and Kailah purchased a pop up trailer. They will use it to live and travel for 5 months to California, where Ryan has temporary work lined up.
