Looking good in that fancy dinner jacket! :) The bees look fantastic.
Love the bee videos, Gosh that had to be horrible for you working out there! Texas heat is the worst ever! Yikes. . . at the end, the bee swatting and your glasses flying. . . man I was freaking out for you! Glad that's over. . .ahh ha ha ha ha, for now. Thanks for the share . . . As always, Be Kind, Be Light, Be Love to One Another, Help, Hear, Listen and Enjoy each other!! . . . Just Be! Love you guys!
Yeah, I was so startled I didn't even realize my glasses were gone LOL
Just sitting here going "nooo! Don't unzip the veil yet! Eeee!" Glad you made it out sweaty but unscathed!
Fun fact on pigs: they don't sweat (well much anyway!) Which is why they like (possibly need in your area) a pool/mud to wallow in so they can cool off and regulate their temp.
That pig really loves her little muddy area that I made for her :)
Yeah pigs need shade and a place to wallow. They dont sweat and if in sun to long they will get sunburn
Good stuff, Blake. You've got me thinking about getting a golf cart to haul everything back and forth to the hives.
The cart has been a really nice tool!
wow that bee near the end must have thought you was going to place your hat on her to make you move like you did :O glad all is well :) thank goodness you added the fanily fb link I guess with it being a closed group fb don't let you find it so easy hope I answered the two questions ok :) family comes first always you do what you got to do those of us who understand will still be here :) thanks for sharing
Great video. I’m in British Columbia and it was too cold to get into my hives today. Can’t imagine being in a jacket in 100 degrees!
It makes for a pretty hot party LOL
I'm in Texas and I never get into hives except very early morning. Like at sunrise. The heat is just too dangerous. I also plan to buy a cooling jacket this year. They have gel inserts that you keep in the freezer and put in the jacket when you go outside.
Ive been curious to ask: what is the difference between the cells containing baby bees/brood (workers, drones, and queens),nectar, pollen, and honey? And how can the queen know which cell to place her egg in?
it's Texas!! what would you expect? I expect it to be this way until late October.
Pretty sure that bees will forage close to home if the source is good enough. We have a hive right next to a hedge that is full of brambles (blackberry) and I have been watching a significant proportion of the bees coming out of the hive make the proverbial bee-line for it. It will be interesting to see if that hedge crops better this year than it usually does.
Walmart sells blue "Shop Towels" on a roll that are very sturdy and will last a long time. I use and reuse them in my kitchen. They are like a tough version of Bounty paper towels
do you use them to trap beetles?
sadly, I don't have bee hives, but I do know these are sturdy fiber towels that may work well for you.
Leif says you need a bee skyscraper. We are going to start educating ourselves on the bees and hope to do it with 4H in the fall.
So fun! Your kids will have a ball with that.
Hello, I'm new to your channel. It's great watching inspections and always fun to see honey and brood like that! I'm in the Panhandle of Idaho and my bees are in essentially single deeps still. One suggestion for killing fewer bees is as you inspect a frame and go to place it back in the hive slide it in with the sidebars touching the previously inspected frame and keep the frames pressed tight together, then when you are done inspecting all the frames you can simply use your hive tool and leaver all of the frames across at once. You are 10 times less likely (in a 10 frame hive that is) to squash bees or more importantly, the queen! Made that mistake last year and started working to make the habit right after.
I'm a new beekeeper. My hives are just north of Houston. I'm going to try a mosquito net jacket my next trip plus a neck ice pack. The jacket is xlarge and should be a little puffy when worn. There are ice packs you can make with salt and corn starch found on utube of course. Mine will be in a tube shape with ties. Plus a break in between but I'm not filming. Maybe I won't have a heat stroke. Haha
I do hope that works for you. Stay safe out there.
Not to forget we have high humidity and dew point 😓
Hey, Blake. Good to see you out and about :)
A great thing to beat the heat is a soft gel injury wrap. The ones designed for around the thigh (long and narrow shape) are perfect to drape around the neck and shoulders. They can be found at most stores that stock injury care items, or on the internet, of course. I would recommend two or three, keeping the spares in an ice chest nearby while you work outside, and especially in your bee keeping gear. Using one definitely keeps the core temperature down, and that is so worth the annoyance of an extra “thing” to deal with. Another way to use it is to wrap around the waist with the cold pack on the belly. I even just draped one across my head when I got too hot working outside one day.
They usually come with a cover with long Velcro to secure them, but not all do...make sure it is included if you try this.
Better to prevent overheating than drive your body into heat stroke....especially since you often are out there alone.
BTW...that video image is so sharp I need a bandaid! Looks beautiful out there 🐝🌻
great suggestion, Thanks!
Blake, I just noticed that in Hive 2 frame 5 or 6 I think there was a queen cup starting. Just an FYI
Thanks Kate, I'll take a closer look at that next time I'm in the hive.
I was just looking at one of those vented jackets.
It is worth the investment! well... to me it is. I'm not sure about way up in the arctic tundra where you are LOL
Hi Blake, thanks for the video. FYI, when I click on a link I get a message saying I cannot purchase from the American store. I live in Australia. Don't know what I can do about that........
Glad things are getting back to as normal as things can be. I too have a special needs daughter so my thoughts are often with Luke and I understand how things can change in a nano-second. Take care, best wishes to you all, from Australia 🐨🐨
Thank you for sharing that about your daughter! I'll check into the link to see if there are international options.
Who makes that bee jacket do they make a whole suit the hood looks very spacious and appears to stay away from your face well
I bought it from Amazon: amzn.to/2Mm3t9K
Are you wearing rubber gloves?
Honest to goodness, I've just about stopped watching 90% of the youtubers because of all the useless verbiage. This isn't 60 Minutes or On the road with Charles Kuralt. I stopped to get a review of the vented suit, not a lesson on hydration and the extended heat forecast of Texas. Half my ancestors are buried between San Antonio and Temple,Texas...I know how hot it gets and when to take a drink of water. Just tell us about the suit, who made it, how much it costs and the particulars of using it.
