      Thank you so much Christine! You’re so kind. At the moment, we don’t have any plans for an airbnb, but there are some in the area we’d love everyone to support. We will keep you posted! Ciao

    Looks like the foundation repair is going to be a great plan. The blueprint of the house made all the difference. All you need now is to be prepared for delays and get the bank account beefed up to handle the soon to come surprises. It reminds me of Francis Mayes book. In a year or so you can put your feet up and forget about the house budget and enjoy a glass of wine. I don't have the temperament to do a project like this.

      Thank you! We’re so happy to hear from you. We’ve had some delays and expect more. It’s hard when we are not there full time. We started early so that we can have our full dream ready in retirement .We’re taking it a little at a time. As they say in Italy, piano piano.

    Nice progress. Will be worth it even though much will not be visible.

      Thank you John! I agree and know it will be well worth it. We are happy that we got an early start so everything will be in place when we retire.

    Great update. But why limit the sidewalk to just that. Please re-consider and make the tall window a glass door to a patio area. Hint: this is a great opportunity to create a PATIO. :)

    • @cerchiamo
      @cerchiamo  Před rokem +1

      Thank you Violeta. He do have some long term plans for a patio situation that will addressed in the future. Right now we are just making the house stable. We did think about there being a glass door there, which is not totally of the table yet, but there is a door just on the side that might create an awkward set up. Happy to hear from you!

    LOVE this video. You and your wife seem like such troopers, exploring the smaller towns and dealing with all of the structural issues of the house. I love the approach they're taking with the foundation. How do you guys manage the language barrier?

    • @cerchiamo
      @cerchiamo  Před rokem +2

      Thank for watching Mike! We are happy to hear from you! We vetted the situation before jumping in, even so we knew it was home the moment we saw it. I think one could spend a lifetime visiting all the unique places and towns around Italy. Translation apps helps a lot. The Mrs is fluent in Spanish and adapts quickly. I find that Italians are always happy when they see us try.

    Oooooo!!! How exciting! As an engineer (in a completely unrelated field) I really really love this sort of video! Love seeing how problems are analyzed and fixed! And combining that with the excitement of fixing up a wonderful old structure is like candy for the brain and emotions, heh heh heh! 🎉🎉. Really good news about the greater depth and extent of the existing foundation! I’m curious if the current trench is as deep as they are going to go for the new slab that will be attached by cemented pins through to the existing foundation - from the video it doesn’t look deep enough. Thinking maybe they didn’t want to go too deep at first, and risk destabilizing the structure before they are ready to do the new construction. So happy for you! Oh, and I can’t help thinking about the bats. (I love bats and what they do for the environment…). I’m guessing/ hoping that with all of the activity they might have moved on of their own accord. Also, sorry if you’ve said and I’ve forgotten: do you speak Italian? And how did you come to choose Roccaspinalveti? I know you mentioned family in the area, but curious if there were other specifics about your choice. We are seriously considering a move to Italy once I retire. I spend a little time every day studying Italian, but it’s really not enough to get good (although I can measure slow progress based on watching Italian shows with subtitles). Hope that the water from all of the rain in May has dried out by now, so that the work on your house can resume!

      Thank you Deb! So great to hear from you! It was good news about the foundation and they will dig deeper before they drill all the way to bedrock for the pillars. The bats have moved on their own accord but last time I was there, I was pleased to see them out at night. Hoping to have a bat box for them someday.
      Unfortunately, I do not speak Italian yet, but understand a little. My wife’s first language is Spanish so she is easily picking up Italian and learning quickly.
      Roccaspinalveti was just fate for us. We were searching for a place to buy and fell in live with this one. Our family is about 5 hours north of us. Living in the south, with family in the north, gives us opportunities to enjoy all of what Italy has to offer. You definitely will not regret retirement to Italy. Good luck with your studies.
      The rain has subsided!

    wow great progress. I guess this wasn't expected when you bought the house. Did you budget for this type of endeavor? How expensive is this type of work? I am looking to buy property, but this scares me when people such as yourselves take of on these projects.

    • @cerchiamo
      @cerchiamo  Před rokem +2

      Thank you for watching and commenting Jim! Great to hear from you. No, that was not exactly what we expected when we bought the house. We knew there were some issues that were going to have to be deal with. Since we knew that going in, we figured with the price of the house and what we were going to budget it wasn’t much different than we would expect for any other type of renovation. Always make sure that your due diligence, follow the rules in hire, the right people. If it’s something you want to and follow your dreams, do not be scared. There are plenty of resources, including ourselves to give you advice. Since it is our retirement plan, we wanted to get an early start.

    Great to hear the problem getting fixed. Unfortunately these old houses are susceptible off getting cracks n movements. Land movement, water drainage etc. love watching the videos. 40 days to go till we hit abruzzo. 🦘🇦🇺

      Great to hear from you Nick. You’re so kind. We vetted the situation before purchasing and as a rule of thumb we try over budget everything. We knew this was home as soon as we saw it! Enjoy Abruzzo and get some good arrosticini!
