    My garage door stopped working, as it was torn in the middle-top section. Local garage guys wanted $300 to repair it or $550 to replace the top panel. I saw your video, went out and bought a power drill, and parts. Had it fixed in about 1.5 hours! So happy! I spent $145, and got a brand new power drill and all of the tools it came with! Plus I learned a lot about how my garage works. Thank you! 🙌

    Some guy's manager told me that it was cheaper to replace the entire door/springs etc.....I hired another company. I love your explanation and wish I have seen this video before I hired a company.

    Replacing the spring can be dangerous but it is not hard. Buy a $10 tool and save hundreds.

  • @andersongaragedoorservicesllc

    ahh the classic (you have to buy a whole new door or opener trick
    You're smart for not falling for it and fixing it yourself
    I'd say it's a job well done
    Sorry forgot that I commented a while back and commented again

  • @andersongaragedoorservicesllc

    good quality tip
    good idea to make this video since this is a common problem with these garage doors that are not reinforced properly

    Even tho 99% of garage doors are used with a garage door opener(GDO), many do not come standard to work with a GDO. They require extra reinforcement.
    Your heart is in the right place with that angle iron, but for that door especially, I'd get the actual strut *and* a vertical brace. I would even do the other door also.
    I do realize the Garage Door Mafia can make it difficult to find some of those specialized parts, but they are available if you shop around. If you want an impossible task, try to find a 1 piece GDO rail. ;)

    i wouldn't recommenced using a weight as it could damage the bottom section or even slip depending on the door. if you put a pair of vise grips or C clamps over one of the rollers on each side it should prevent the door from rolling up.

      @@steveness2655 that's actually not a bad idea assuming they have a lock. Good tip if I ever need to use or forget my vise grips lol Thanks !

    Great idea! Just as an FYI, they actually do still make that panel. The guy just wanted a sale..

  • @dougeckard1460
    @dougeckard1460 Před 2 lety

    All doors need to have the top section reinforced when there is a motor installed on it. If this was done properly when they were installed the crack would not have happened. Changing the section position was a quick fix for now but over time that crack will get bigger as it wears and will cause more damage to the door. Trick is find a dealer who says the model of the door you have to get a new section and you can have the one section replaced. Or do it yourself if you choose but vice grips are what professionals use not 40 lb weights

    awesome video. btw, the genie opener is mounted a bit to high. Instead of pushing the door close it's pushing down on the top panel. This will damage the top panel. I would lower it about an 3 inches.

    Absolutely fantastic, this is the same situation with my door, now i know i can dive in and if not fix it completely, at least it will be a lot better, Thanks very much for sharing. One question, did the door travel/force had to be adjusted because of the angle iron making it heavier? Again, thanks.

  • @zacksgaragedoorserviceandr1208

    To be honest you did a pretty good job but whoever installed the garage door opener it was mounted to high up and the door arm when the garage door is closed it’s not supposed to be straight up and down it’s supposed to have an angle towards the opener and you could’ve just left the panel the way it was and just reinforce it the way you have it then you won’t see that dent anymore

    • @l337pwnage
      @l337pwnage Před 4 lety

      also, the door opener bracket on the door is upside down. ;)

  • @alphabanks

    This was a great video TBH there's very little reason to replace a garage door unless you want to change the look of the house or add insulation. Also, it's hard to find good contractors that will just replace whats broke most of them want you to replace the entire door.

  • @molsenice
    @molsenice Před 5 lety +2

    you didnt inspect your own house?

  • @zacksgaragedoorserviceandr1208

    Well to be honest you could’ve left the top panel the way it was you just have to reinforce it with a top strut and even angle iron works too I would recommend going and to end but you don’t have a huge garage doors so what the repair you have right now will hold up and I recommend doing the same thing on the other door to prevent more issues but if you did put that panel that was the top panel back just do the same repair that you did and you won’t even tell because that Dan is hiding from the weather stripping around the door and the header

    There are a lot of crooked contractors. I have had the displeasure of having to deal with them (garage door, plumbers, hvac, electricians and mechanics). What to do if you run into crooked contractors:
    1. Name and Shame. Let people know the name of the contractor.
    2. Post a review online so other people don't get scammed.
    3. Stay informed so you are less likely to get scammed.

    There are safety reasons as to why the doors give. You should never reinforce a garage door at the top lip.

      lostintime86 don’t. The cable is attached to the bottom panel. Not something to mess with if you don’t know what you’re doing.

    • @johnbumpus7138
      @johnbumpus7138 Před 3 lety

      Use a C clamp to secure the cable to the track or get a set of winding bars this guys heart was in the right place but it’s a very shoddy DIY he should have just bought a new panel and installed it those self tapping screws he used will eventually cause The sheet metal on that panel to rip and then one day when his wife and kids are in the garage and try to open the door it will give and most likely cause catastrophic failure of the torsion springs A very dangerous scenario
