India has a long history of droughts and floods. In the past, these natural disasters often destroyed crops and livestock, leaving people without food or income. In these difficult times, cows became essential for survival. They provided milk, which was a vital source of nutrition, and their dung could be used for fuel and fertilizer. As a result, cows came to be seen as sacred animals, and killing them was considered a sin.
Today, cows are still an important part of Indian culture. They are often treated as pets, and people give them names and care for them with love and affection. In some parts of India, cows are even allowed to roam freely through the streets. This is because they are seen as a symbol of peace and prosperity.
The story of the cow in India is a reminder of the importance of animals in our lives. They provide us with food, companionship, and even spiritual guidance. We should all be grateful for the animals that share our world, and we should treat them with respect.

Hey Zuzana, on your question regarding why cows are revered in India, during famines and crop failures since the ancient times, Indians have survived on the milk from their domesticated cows. Hence the concept of Gau Mata (Cow Mother) came into existence. As you have learned from this video that Indians consume a lot of dairy products. Even now, when subsistence farmers face crop failures, they survive of the milk from the cows they own, in part, and the government food grants in part.

Cow is considered a mother because its milk feeds you throughout your life. Usually in most of the hindu families the first Roti (≈bread) is cooked for a cow and birds (if cow doesn't eat). Although the actual tradition was to cook first three rotis for a cow, a needy person and a dog but only some cook for the other two now. I wish they return to the tradition again.

India is one of the oldest civilizations in the world with multicolored diversity and rich cultural heritage. Along with this, it has also been molding itself with the changing times. After getting independence, India has made multidimensional social and economic progress. India has become self-sufficient in agriculture and is now counted among the most industrialized countries in the world. Along with this, it is also being counted among those few countries whose feet have reached the moon. The area of India is 32,87,263 sq km. Which starts from the heights of the snow-capped Himalayas and extends to the equatorial rain forests of the south. Being the seventh largest country in the world, India stands out from the rest of Asia which is characterized by mountains and seas and gives it a distinct geographical identity. Surrounded by the great Himalayan mountain range in the north, it becomes narrower beyond the Tropic of Cancer. The Bay of Bengal in the east, the Arabian Sea in the west and the Indian Ocean in the south determine its boundary. 🇮🇳

Then our ancestors used to have only cow at that time because of which our ancestors survived, then our ancestors considered cow as the form of God. The second reason is that in our Hindu belief, 33 types(Koti) of gods reside in the cow, due to which the cow was given the status of God. The third reason is that suppose no one is the mother of the newborn.Or the mother of that child is unable to feed her own milk, then only cow's milk is fed, due to which the child survives, this is the reason why in Hinduism, the cow has been given the status of a mother🙏🇮🇳

In fact, when Islam spread into Iran, the Zorashtrians migrated to India and India welcomed them and today they are the Parsi community in India. The Zorashtrians in Iran were given three options - convert to Islam, get beheaded for not converting, or to leave the country/land. Those who left, because they didn't want to convert to Islam or to die, landed in India and started life there. Similarly, the Tibetan Dalai Lama has been living in Dharamshala in Himachal Pradesh since the 1950s when he fled from Tibet because of the Chinese invasion and takeover of Tibet.

Around the time East India company was flexing its political muscles, an ambitious Indian dynasty was consolidating the country.
They won Tiruchirappalli in the south [Siege of Trichinopoly (1741)], Delhi in the north [Battle of Delhi (1757)] Peshawar in the west [Battle of Peshawar (1758)] and invaded Bengal in the east [Maratha invasions of Bengal] - forming the rough boundary of present India. Less than 5 empires in world history have conquered this much land this fast. To put it in context, the distance between Peshawar and Trichirappalli is comparable to the distance between Greece and Iran.Due to infighting and clever playing of sides by the EIC, the Marathas lost the momentum and got consumed by the East India Company by 1818 - Third Anglo-Maratha War. [4 decades later the Marathas would have their revenge in the revolt of 1857 when Nana Sahib would contribute to the overthrow of the company rule and the resulting bankruptcy of the largest company on earth. 5 decades after that another group of Peshwa descents would form the core of the Congress movement to begin the end of the empire].
In short, if the British had not conquered India, Marathas would have done it or somebody else would have done it. By 1707, the Mughal empire had already controlled most of the subcontinent except for some parts in the extreme south.
In short, it is a myth that India was always a warring bunch of states that Britain somehow made a country out of. Every major nation has had its chaos. England had it in multiple centuries. Same in China, Iran, Greece and elsewhere. India’s chaos was in the mid to late 18th century. Not a permanent thing. 15 centuries ago when an ambitious Hindu saint,Adi Shankara, set about reviving Hinduism, he put his famous muths [missions] in the four corners of the present nation. If people at that time didn’t have an idea of India or its boundaries, why would he put these missions in such a strategic way or have his classic debates from Kashmir to Kerala?
Geographically India is hard to support multiple political entities. It has a nice natural boundary - Himalayas at the top, Brahmaputra in the east, Indian ocean in the south and Sindhu river in the west. These natural boundaries defined Indian culture and has been recognized by Indians across all regions. These boundaries built and sustained an unique culture. Sure, we share similarities with fellow Aryans of Iran and Sri Vijaya folks of modern Indonesia. But, the core of our civilization was always between the Himalayas to the Indu maha sagar.
Within these boundaries there are no natural features to stop an ambitious ruler from running over small rulers. There are no major mountain ranges or impenetratable jungles that stand in the way. There are no cultural barriers either.
While the people called the outsiders as Turksha [from Turkish origin - most Sultanates and Mughals], Hunas, Shakas or Yavanas [the Ionians who came 2000 years], there was no particular term for northerners or southerners. People thought to be of the same culture/ethnicity. In fact, the southern rulers like the Cholas had Prakrit/Sanskrit in their coins and glorified the ganga river of the north. Pilgrims from the south dreamed of bathing of Ganga in Kasi and pilgrims from north dreamed of bathing in the calm ocean of Rameswaram.
North and south followed the same religions, same gods, similar rituals, festivals, names, vocabulary [drawn from Sanskrit], social systems [like varnasrama], political systems and even similar crops. Just as Yorkshire differs from Cornwall, so does Kashmir and Kerala, just on a bigger scale due to a bigger geographical distance. Nevertheless same nation.
When the priests of south India set out to recite their temple prayers they would do in the name of Bharat Varshe, Bhartakande [land of India of the Indian continent]. The temples of north India, west India, east India, central India would all pray in the name of same Bharat of this continent of Bharat.
In short, it was natural for India to get united and it was done time to time by ambitious leaders. The last time it was done was not by British [who had an ungovernable mess of 550+ kingdoms alongside their territory], but by Sardar Patel - the nationalist who welded much of India with the help of Nehru and V. P. Menon.
Sure, there are interesting variations among us. What a Haryanavi would call as Sankranti would be called as Pongal by a Tamil and Bhogali Bihu by an Assamese. While the Punjabis would call their April 14 new year as Vaishaki, the Malayalis would call that Vishu. While the Deepavali is celebrated for Rama in UP, it might be celebrated for Krishna by the south or Lakshmi in the west. While the Gujaratis dance for Navratri, the northerners do Ram lila, the easterners and southerners do in the name of Durga. We are just one with many forms.
Across the subcontinent there is an affection for the Himalayas, Indus river, Indian ocean and the Ganga. You can see this in names kept by parents across India and the temples built by devotees [in extreme south temples look to build replicas of Manasarovar in Tibet or Kashi Vishwanath].
With or without the British such a union would have happened. It happened before the British rule [Mughals], during the British consolidation [Marathas] and after the British rule [republic era].

India existed as a civilization-state. Now it is a Westphalian nation-state with fixed borders. Concept of fixed borders is fairly new, from treaty of Westphalia - devised to stop European nations from trying to keep changing borders in the age of total war. Before the advent of citizen army of French republic, war was between small numbers of armies led by royals. Total war changed that because of deep mobilization, immense casualties and protracted drawn out wars. So just because western European countries managed to have fixed borders and political unity etc a century or two before India, they don't magically become a 'natural country’ and India becomes an ‘artificial country’ .
The concept of nation-states, i.e. that the aspirations of the people that constitute a nation are best served by a common political entity is considered a relatively recent idea in Europe from the 18th century. Nationalism led to the formation of nation-states and modern countries. This development was followed up with a gradual hardening of state boundaries with the passport and visa regime that followed it.
Note that the concept of nationhood is based on the idea shared by a set of people that they constitute a nation. This idea or feeling may be based on common ties of a people based on their culture, common descent, language, religion or other such attributes. The state constitutes a group of people inhabiting a specific territory and living according to a common legal and political authority.
The modern nation-state, as it exists today, is a new development for the entire world, and not just for India. Mediaeval Europe, for instance, was divided politically into many small principalities, the boundaries and sovereignties of which changed frequently. Many of the countries as we know them today got established in the 19th and 20th century, and the boundaries of these changed throughout the 20th century - in the two World Wars, border disputes and the turmoil in Eastern Europe.
The United Kingdom was not really united till the act of Union in 1702 when England (including Wales) and Scotland came together. Even then they retained different laws and (even more crucially in European nationhood) retained separate national Churches. In 1801, the United Kingdom of Great Britain and Ireland was formed. In 1922, Ireland broke off as an independent country resulting in the present political formation - the United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland. Thus the UK in its present political state, if that is the criteria to be used, is not even a hundred years old.
Across the Atlantic, the picture is even more stark. In 1700, the British colonies were spread barely over the area that comprises the few North Eastern States, less than 10% of the current geographical areas. The diverse Native American tribes that inhabited the area of the present day United States could not be said to have comprised a nation, and even if they did, the current United States neither considers itself as a continuity of the native culture, nor are its people primarily descendents of the natives. Even in 1776, when America declared itself a separate state from the British, its area was a small fraction of the area it has today, mainly constituting the states on the East Coast. Only in 1845 did Texas and California, among its largest states, become part of it as a result of a war with Mexico. Washington State gained statehood in 1889, Hawaii in 1900. Thus the United States in its present political and geographic conception is barely 100 years old as a state and, at the maximum limit, as a political entity is about 250 years, with many annexations and a civil war in between. No state or kingdom existed on its boundaries before that in history.
If you take Mexico, the story is better, but not much. While it has greater continuity from pre-colonial times than the United States because of the Aztec Empire that existed for about a hundred years before the Spanish Conquest, the Aztec never controlled all of present day Mexico. No other conception of nation-hood, such as shared religious beliefs, united the other areas of Mexico with the Aztec ones. Furthermore, while present day Mexicans take pride in their Aztec heritage and use symbols from the Aztec nation on their flag, they have largely lost any direct cultural continuity of either language or religious beliefs from pre-colonial times. Spanish has very nearly wiped out the native languages and 95% of Mexicans are now Christians and described as `Hispanic’. i.e. of the Spanish culture.
Similarly, Africa and South America mostly constitute of state boundaries carved up by colonial rule. The present boundaries of the African states were largely carved out by treaties among the European nations between 1884 and 1899 in meetings held in Europe with no African representation into the process! While there had been some kingdoms like Ghana and Mali in earlier times that were politically united, the boundaries of current African countries rarely map to the territories of historical kingdoms.
In short, if we take the legitimacy of current nation-states on the basis of centuries of common continuous political rule over the same geographical boundary and inhabited by the same people, then practically no country on the planet meets this criteria. Simply put, shifting nature of political kingdoms and their boundaries over the centuries legitimize virtually no country in its present form.
To understand nationhood then as it is supports the modern nation-state, we thus must search the roots of nationhood first and foremost in the conception of nationhood, i.e. did a particular set of people, within a particular geography, imagine of themselves a common socio-cultural geographical heritage that comprised them as a nation?

This video is kinda good, better than the other ones out there but not free of stereotypes. For example, the comment of Indian films having a happy ending all the time is absolute rubbish. One who has no idea of Indian Cinema will say these stupid things. We make movies of every genre possible. Films like RRR, KGF Chapter 1 and 2, Pathaan, etc are just huge and have raked in huge numbers at the global box office. While there are family dramas too, low budget romantic comedies too, biopics too(some like Bhaag Milkha Bhaag based on the life of Indian athlete Milkha Singh have gone on to win so many awards at international film festivals). Movies like Article 15 and Jai Bhim challenge the Indian society at the root level and show the audience the absolute horrifying effects of the caste system and why we need to eradicate it. Only a fool will say that all Indian films are having songs and dance and happy endings. Hell NO!!!! Indian Cinema is as diverse as India and Indian culture. Each region of India makes such wonderful movies that you'll literally cry watching some of them. Also, our cinema is way different than other world industries because we incorporate song and dance sequences in almost every movie, most of which actually carry forward the plot of that particular movie. Our movies are long (like two hours minimum) but are engaging enough to keep you hooked throughout the time you're in the theatre. We celebrate our movies because they show our culture with pride. Actors like Shahrukh Khan, Ram Charan and NTR Jr are known worldwide now. Shahrukh Khan especially is HUGE in West Asian countries like Saudi Arabia and the UAE

South is slightly more developed due to numerous sea ports, so most industries prefer South due to less transportation cost...... Nothing to do with religion..... But if u r interested, South Indian states have 20% -30% muslims+ Christian population max, rest are Hindu...... Other states have over 90% Hindu population..... So yeah relatively u can say abrahamic religions are little bit more prevalent in south, mainly due to sea trades right from exploration era of Europeans from 17th century..... They arrived in south by sea.... And dharmic religions ( Hindus, Sikhs, Buddhists, jains) covers almost entire of india and most prevalent in north..... But u can also see majority muslims towards Pakistan border side and some in Bangladesh border side in north because of islamic invasion era from Afghanistan side in north

5:17 The Siachen glacier is also the highest battlefield in the world. Indian army is also titled as the highest battlefield controller due to this glacier. In 1984 the pakistani millitary captured it and to counter it India launched operation meghdoot to strike them down and the Indian army fought a fierce battle without proper winter clothes when the pakistani soldiers were very well equiped for the climate. Still the Indian soldiers were successful to kick them off and to reintegrate our land back to India.

The south is seemingly more developed because all the invasions happened from the north. So the northern states had to bear the brunt of these invasions while the south was relatively peaceful.

Many people have a common misconception that ‘The feeling of Indianness (one nation) did not exist before the British rule.’ First of all we need to understand that this notion has not come out of nowhere but has been carefully taught and implanted through the British educational system in India which once used this to encourage the division among Indians by preaching that Indians were never united.
So, let me present some scenarios to debunk this myth.
    Historical examples:
Throughout our Indian history, we find the Indians united under one banner after some brief intervals of time which was followed by invasions (the invaders were referred to as mlechhas).
The first consolidation of a large part of India was under Magadha. This was followed by an invasion of Alexander. (Weren’t Greeks considered as foreigners?)
The consolidation of India under Mauryas. This was followed by invasion of various Central Asian tribes who were initially considered as foreigners by the major post-Mauryan kingdoms like Satavahanas and Shungas. (The texts of those period record victories over mlechhas which prove that they were considered as foreigners).
Consolidation of a large part of India under Guptas. This was followed by the invasion of Hunas and later Arabs.
The Arabs are defeated by the united confederation of the Rashtrakutas of South and Gurjara-Pratiharas of North (the sovereigns of later Rajputs). It is followed by internal conflicts between these Indian kingdoms for around 3 centuries and then Mahmud of Ghazni invades.
(Taking a fast forward…) A coalition of Afghans (who had been accepted by the Indian society till then) and Rajputs under Maharana Pratap against Akbar (Mughals were viewed as foreigners by both of them for a long period of time.)
Mughals and later Marathas establish a pan-Indian empire.
So, as stated above, there are a number of instances which show that the feeling of Indianness did exist among Indians as they were united from time to time.
    Geographical isolation:
India has been separated from the rest of the world by natural barriers. As a result India lived separately and evolved her own style of life and development. No doubt, some of the foreign cultures and civilizations found their way into India through the northern passes but their influence was very limited. These led to the development of a Indian culture with slight variations in the various subregions of India.
Finally, the literary texts of India:
The Ramayana links the North with the South. The Maha- Bharata introduces the concept of one Bharat. These stories were then taken and told and retold in all the languages of the people of this great civilization, till the stories themselves established a linkage among us and to the sacred geography they celebrated. This sacred geography is what makes north Indians flock to Tirupati and south Indians to the Kumbha Mela. These books which were compiled centuries ago prove that the Indians were indeed ‘one’ since centuries ago!!
And yet, we learn, in our colonial schools, that the British created India and gave us a link language, as if we were not talking to each other for thousands of years, traveling, telling and retelling stories before the British came!!
Comparing this to Britain itself, in England in the Dark Ages the idea of England existed but in actual fact that region was very much divided into several sovereign kingdoms: Wessex, East Anglia, Mercia and Northumbria to name the main ones.
    A nation is defined as:
A large body of people united by common descent, history, culture, or language, inhabiting a particular state or territory.
Note the definition doesn't include political structures, kingdoms, empires etc. It is just about cultural practices.
When the Greeks came to India, they didn’t have many terms to distinguish the Punjabis, Rajasthanis, Haryanvis and Biharis they encountered. They found the culture quite common and used the term Indians for all these groups and same for the Persians, Chinese, Arabs, Turks, English and other groups who visited India. They saw the people following common culture.
Again, the locals had term for outsiders - Yavanas (Ionians) for Europeans, Turushka (Turkic) for Muslims, but the different states didn’t have term signifying outsiders from other Indian states and they all used the common term Bharat to refer to their land. So, implicitly there was an idea that people of different regions of India had a common descent.
Did Indians have common languages before 1700s? Majority of India spoke a language that is directly derived from the Prakrit. Although the southernmost region speaks a different language [in terms of grammar] the vocabulary is derived from the same words. This is why a northerner can understand terms such as Kanyakumari, Madurai etc - derived from common vocabulary. Same for most of the names kept in the south and almost all scripts of India are related to Brahmi. Tamil kings such as Cholas issued coins in Devanagari script.
Other things that were common to Indians:
    The varna system.
The holy 8 of Hindu pantheon - Siva, Vishnu, Brahma, Parvati, Lakshmi, Saraswati, Ganesha, Surya, Kartikeya.
The importance of the two epics Ramayana and Mahabharata.
Importance of rivers and seeing them as a holy, purifying force. The importance of Ganga as the holy river is particularly common across India.
Priests across the country use the Vedas - the core Hindu text - in the exact same pronunciation.
Again, there are close genetic connections among the Indians and common kingdoms such as the Mauryans, Guptas and Mughals who ruled much of present day India.
When the famed Hindu saint of Shankara set about to reviving Hinduism about 1400 years ago, he went on foot across India to far away places such as Kedarnath, but not to the next door such as Sri Lanka. Indians didn’t try to gain anything from Sri Lanka [besides conquests] while seeing the rest of India as one common cultural entity.
Given these close cultural, linguistic connections, it is safe to assume India as a nation before the English colonization.

Cow is sacred - Ancient vedic texts, then in hindu festivals during pooja PANCHAMRIT means mixture of 5 nectors from cow viz. GHEE, MILK, CURD are used in religious ceremonies so a socio religious cultural angle. Moreover, I dont care we all like Milk and unlike western cherrypicked love for Dogs, Indians are thankful for another mother who provides Milk.
Cows roaming around - accepted as it is, means they are allowed to wander which is wrong but our rules came in 21st century however, such activities is centuries old. We accept domestic animals. Problem of plenty.
20:08 completely wrong, reason is Assumption (well its conformational bias Rudyard kipling wrote in white man syndrome sorry but need to point out fault lines) - 'Christians live in South so south is more developed', but those christians aint white, they are indeginous, reason is South India has less population, more education and responsible citizens with *civic sense* as compared to North (where people got mutated by virtue of history of invasions - example, in North Music Dance is prohibited in Hindu homes considered act of Prostitutes tawayat, Northern women do parda, while in south Women dont do parda and tgere is a culture of playing Music and Dance in south)
Indian royals are many when getting independence in 1947, we had 565 princely states 400 Hindus 100 Muslim princely states since all sold their sovereignity to British so they aint famous but do exist. We might have 1000+ princes.
Longest surving line with illustrious History
    1. Kingdom of Mewar (9th century AD to 1305 AD then jauher happened, 1305 to 1947 AD the most respected Rajput Kingdom)
    2. Chola of Tamil Nadu (10th century to 1947)
Cholas had world first Navy with 1000+ vessels and we found records of friendly Naval games between Cholas of South with Qin Empire of China in 11th century mind bogling right! Cholas founded branches in entire south Asia hence making Indo china a reality example Indonesian Sri Vijaya and Malasian Malay Kingdoms were founded by Chola princes.
Mewar is like Spartans many kings chose honor and death insread of running away and defeated invaders with larger armies. when you visit India you see Maharana Pratap statues in all 4 way crossing. Indian 4 way raod crossing circle is full of statues of our heros from Kings to Revolutionaries.

South india is more developed than north because of the peninsula shape of india and sea trade route from where British or other groups came to india for trade or invasions because India was rich at that time. From north mughal invadors came and destroyed cities and temples and north is surrounded with desert and mountains. So if you see foreign culture and religious group that is because they came through the sea route. One more interesting fact is Colombus was searching for India(for spices) and accidently found America.

India is a huge country with one of the most diverse land and climates, as well it's the country with one of the most fertile land of any countries in the world. Hence, India is the top or top two or three producers of many agricultural products in the world - rice, wheat, milk, millets, and so on.

South India is highly educated as compared to the North India. Most of the Indian scientists come from the Southern part of India. But the thing is, Most of the South Indians are enough rich that they can afford to go to abroad like US, Most of the Indian CEOs of American companies are from the South India. So your assumptions are wrong. See, Why muslims even though they're the second largest majority yet has the lowest number of literacy rate. Bcz they mostly go the madarsas to get religious knowledge instead of schools to get scientific knowledge. Zoroastrians and Jews are most educated communities while Christians too only go to the missionaries instead of schools.

South has Christian population more than north but even that is too minimal(less than 3%) compared to other religions. So there is no need for you to presume that South India is more developed cause of Christianity. South has less population and more industrialised and hence per capita income of south is more and is more developed.
