Whenever I was thinking about the next-generation GoPro's specifications a couple of months ago I kept on saying that I'd love to see improved battery life and better usability. Regarding resolutions and frame rates I always was and still am more than happy with what the Hero4 Black Edition does. After all my 'CZcams production' standard is still 1080p and it'll probably remain this for a bit longer.
So from my first looks GoPro basically did just that. They created a camera with Hero4 specs resolution and frame rate wise but added a couple of features to improve the overall usability. Not the battery life though. It looks like it remained more or less the same compared to the Hero4 BE.
I couldn't really test it for more than for those quick RAW videos. Video quality looks more or less the same to me. It could be that the Hero5's image maybe is a tiny bit sharper. I'm not sure though.
So what about the new features?
Of course the touch screen and display on the back make changing settings and framing your shots a whole lot easier. But with my motorcycle gloves on I can't change them while riding. I easily can change resolutions and frame rates on my Hero4 'on the go' thanks to the simple three button control. When mounted to my helmet's chin (=my favourite place to mount a GoPro for motorcycling) I can't with the Hero5 because I need to use the touch screen. You can however still change modes (video to photo to time lapse etc) because there still is a 'physical' mode button on the camera's side. Plus I just found that it sometimes does pay off to read the manual: you still can change resolutions and framerates with the two buttons. You just have to 'engage' them by pressing the mode button first and then the shutter button. This will activate a settings menu similar to the one from the Hero4. Awesome!
The image stabilization is great in my opinion. Not really necessary for bike usage but finally I can film hand-held without using a gimbal or pole to 'counteract' my terribly shaky hands. Great for quickly capturing moments off the bike! Always with great sound because finally one doesn't need the waterproof case any longer!!
The wide dynamic range mode for photos (basically like HDR) looks neat too. I sometimes even could make use of voice control. Which works very well by the way. I only tried English voice control though. So far I couldn't notice big quality improvements in picture mode though. For that I'll have to do a Hero4/Hero5 side by side comparison. I didn't try RAW photo mode either because I want to wait until Adobe implements the new RAW GoPro picture format into their software.
The 'wind filtering/cancellation' mode is useless on a motorcycle. But that was obvious to me right from the start because one simply can't change the laws of physic.
There are more new features but I haven't tried them yet. If you're interested in getting a HERO5 personally I'd wait for all the in-depth review and comparison videos which soon will be all over CZcams obviously.

I got the camera as a gift last weekend during the "GoPro Family Outing" on Mallorca by the way.

I came her to see gopro review, but got so hypnotized by your amazing cornering, i just had to subscribe to see more.
thanks
im with you on that too!
Damn me too. Just was passing by looking for cheap "new" cam.
This is the best riding video I have ever seen. Ever.
cool, thanks!
Same... what a guy! Is he still alive? Heads down
Yeah, really… wow
I just love how you move a simple 500cc naked bike around better than some people on 1000cc superbike could! Made me Amazon a hero5black as well...
nice!
Love the image stabilization and you, my friend, are a maniac! 👌
thanks
Absolutely stunning. Love the footage... Your riding is impeccable. Love it...
Thank you for such a good user advice video... Especially the bit about waiting for the bugs to be ironed out...
Cheers sir!
thanks for the comment!
I'm really really impressed with your post-production work ;-)
thanks Ian ;)
Awesome first look! Really appreciate you putting this together. Look forward to seeing some more from you and the new hero5 in the future. Enjoy the roads brother!
thanks bro!
Postive corners.... excellent downshifts and melodious rev match....senpai⚡⚡⚡
Thanks a lot
Einmal mehr ein grandioses Video! Danke dafür! :)
ich sag danke!
Nothing like the sound of pegs scraping on the twisties. Makes me want to get my kickstand up right now. Very nice.
yeaaa!
That was wonderful. At the moment i really need a distraction and for me i can think of no more enjoyable or absorbing distraction than watching you riding the little Honda on the twisties with a new camera to test and write about. Thank you. Ride and Speed Safe.
glad I can help my friend!! Best wishes and strength to you!
There's no wind noise? You've put on an external mic?
I sat and watched this in-front of the TV with an Xbox controller in hand for when my buddy walked in, fooled him for a minute.
tahahaha brilliant idea :D
How is the video so smooth, on my gopro4 over 130kmh speed its shaking too much
What mount are you using and how do you avoid wind noise?
Still love it, doesn't seem like it made a lot of differents compared to the 4 but idc, because u're videos are just amazing.
thanks man!!
awesome stabilization
Great skill dude, camera is very impressive could hear your footrest scraping, what bike was you on, stay safe bro enjoy, stewart
Awesome sound quality
Where do you put the external mic
Hi sir, what is your settings in your go pro 5 here? Thanks
did you mount your gopro to your helmet or on your chest?
How do you do or what do you use when recording? I mean, I just purchased a GoPro 5, went to the street and recorded some videos... When I play the video either in the camera itself, PC o Phone I cannot hear anything else than the WIND, very dissatisfied at this point to be honest... Do you use any special case o something?
Can you or anyone help me please?
THANKS
Awesome job mate, as usual...
One of the cool things about your videos is that they show how fast and funny can be riding a 50HP bike, in an era where it seems that if you have less than 180HP and no electronic controls you are nothing!
ciao dal Friaul :)
thanks man!!
Wirklicher geiler Fahrstil/Können und geiler Sound. Tut mir leid wegen des Unfalls. Hoffe du machst weiter so tolle Videos. ^^
solche nicht mehr, aber Videos werden wieder kommen :)
how you remove wind noise?
I think your opinion in the description is fair. It doesn't seem to me neither that the quality has improved compared to your previous videos: in both cases, it's very enjoyable to watch you riding your little Honda in those curvy roads. And even if the quality is slightly better, it isn't obvious anyway. All in all, I don't think the new GoPro 5 is a real game-changer, but it seems to be a great product for someone who wants to buy his first action camera or needs to change his old one.
yes indeed there ain't no big difference. I think I will stick to my Hero4
Looks great Herr Schaafenheimer! I guess you'll learn some new tricks with the 5 as you use it more. Vielen Dank for the quick intro and ride! Mach's gut!
thanks a lot! I'll probably use the Hero5 as my B-camera from now on.
Is it with a extern microphone?
Most videos I have seen with the hero 5 the wind noise is horrible, did you do something to fix that?
see description
Hi can I ask what settings you recommend setting the camera to for motorbike riding and filming. The GoPro will be mounted on the bike.
depends on what you want to achieve
It was good to read opinion on this Schaaf, thanks!
Brilliant riding, as always! :)
thanks a lot!
Bitte schön!
how did u get the units
Sick Ride !!! Respect ++
thanks
What bike is this? You’re shedding these turns
I think it looks great Schaaf
thanks man!
Hey! I bought the Hero 5, what case do I need and what chin mount do you prefer? (Link pls?) I think I need a case which lets me have access to the screen (the diving cases are completely closed, arent they?)
Thanks!!!
(For riding my Motorcycle)
What are your audio settings mate?
Hi quick question, how did you remove the wind noise of the video? did you edit it in gopro studio or in the camera directly? please help :(
czcams.com/video/ne8b8DING_A/video.html
Nice design, works well and very easy to set up.
Glad you like it!
Thank you for spending hours and hours making it look like you were going faster 😁
no problem ;)
Insane, dude...
thanks
Looks really good!
thanks!
I'm following in your footsteps. Got one on my bike as well. Was looking forward to riding today. No dice, rain all day long!
I'm wondering if Protune makes a huge difference with the wind noise. I'm catching a lot of wind noise instead of actual bike. I posted it on my page
ProTune makes ZERO difference regarding noise.
Mit externem Mikrofon oder wird der Wind vom Windschutz vorne umgeleitet? Weil die anderen GoPro 5 Videos zeigen leider, dass die neue Kamera sehr gerne Wind aufnimmt auf dem Mopped...

Nice ride mate! The picture quality looks the same as the 4, are you still using the ND filter?
In the description he said he didn't use de ND Filter ! Looks really cool even without !
Hey Schaaf. I am enjoying your videos man. I'm now persuaded to buy up a CB500 as a winter project to prepare for some summer fun.
I was interested to see what work you've done to the bike and why. For example the Renthal handlebars. I had the same idea. What was your motivation? Maybe a video talking about it all would be interesting?
My main ride in South Africa is the Triumph Tiger 800 XC but for Europe I think the 500 will be fine.
All mods are listed here: czcams.com/video/AcsQ8jDqGbU/video.html
and to answer your why?: because all the mods make the bike more rideable in a way I personally appreciate it.
+Schaaf Danke. I saw the video. seems like good budget upgrades!
I know it’s an old video and I probably won’t get a response but I was wondering if it would be better to have the stabilization on or get that extra 10% of the screen on super wide mode. I’m about to start taking videos while I ride and I have a hero 5 too
Just see what you like more. I prefer stabilisation off for a more natural image
@@Schaaf alright cool, I took a video last night driving in my car and it felt good with no stabilization
Hello, I recently bought a second-hand go pro 5 and I would like to know how you get such a clean sound. Today I rode a motorcycle using the camera for the first time and I can't even hear my motorcycle, just wind xd I would appreciate your answer, regards
Zoom h1 audio record
Seems like gopro are still going in the right direction every camera ticks the boxes!, I have the hero4 session (I only use the camera for clips etc). nice video as always man
thanks Remoo!
You can change the settings with the buttons. It requires an update though. Once updated hold both buttons down and it enables the front screen menu like the old one.
quote from my description: "You can however still change modes (video to photo to time lapse etc) because there still is a 'physical' mode button on the camera's side. Plus I just found that it sometimes does pay off to read the manual: you still can change resolutions and framerates with the two buttons. You just have to 'engage' them by pressing the mode button first and then the shutter button. This will activate a settings menu similar to the one from the Hero4. Awesome!"
It doesn't even need an update to do so btw.
Excellent point about changing modes on the helmet. I'll be keeping my Hero 3+ Black for the helmet mount. Cheers Schaaf.
you're more than welcome!!
OMG I WISH I COULD RIDE LIKE YOU!
Benutzt du einen Filter im Adobe ? Falls ja welchen ? Finde deine Schärfe sowie die Qualität überragend !
Kleine Tipps wären wirklich super im Adobe :)
Danke
It is awesome how youtube allows less compression as resolution rises, in otehr videos the trees look pretty pixelated, but here on 1440p it looks sharp as a knife
true that!
A true motorcycle rider.
don't know about that but thanks still
nice quality for the camera. Great ride once again and couldnt miss the footpegs lol
btw wrong animal on the dash " normaly is a cat hehehehe "
speed safe
thank you Sam!
Ça me rappelle ma jeunesse !
Merci
de rien
it will be awesome if u try to make compartion between different options(sharp and shutter )
Cool just found you loving ur riding. Stay safe man. 👍
thanks Andy!
wow nice riding skills dude !
thanks dude
Always a guy with a old bike that can ride like hell lol I did not expect this kind of riding good shit
Thanks Henry
Wtf. The way you turn. Sick!
Thanks
I find that this Gp 5 is managing the speed and the passage between dark and luminous areas much better. The stability is bullet proof. Just a question, what do you think of the sound quality? Since you upload the audio from the Zoom H1, I can't compare, but you should have heard it during the editing, do you think it's possible to avoid an external audio source?
no, absolutely not possible as soon as your camera is facing the wind! Thank you!!
Well, since GoPro 5 has Bluetooth, would it be possible to use a BlueTooth microphone with the GoPro 5 for motovlogging?
You corner like a fucking champion, mesmerising to watch how far/quickly you shift your weight over!
thank you
Schönes Video und Glückwunsch zu neuen Kamera
Mich würde bei den Kurven stark interessieren wo das ist?
danke! Die Teststrecke muss leider geheim bleiben ;)
Heart pumping twisty action
;)
I need a new GoPro hero5😍
Nice video✌🏼️👍🏼
thanks dude!
Awesome footage, how did you eliminate the wind noise
Google "Schaaf-method"
I thought it looked fantastic by the way. And the image stabilisation works a charm!
thanks man!
is it possibleto get ND filter effect using settings gopro 5? (without ND filter)
nope, that's against the laws of physic
I thought that u could get this effect using shutter speed and sharpness option
Great video! You were hauling ass! I can see the improvements in the GoPro 5.
thanks
whats the top speed on that cb? 160~ish? im interested on buying one, and i dont want her to be super high rev during highway arround 120kmh
A good one will easily reach ~180kph actually. Mine's just rather old and has lost quite a bit of power at this stage already. But highway speeds of 130-140 are no problem at all.
Schaaf thanks!
awesome video. i like your review you reached to the main points all that i wanted to know. now just wondering shell i buy 4be or 5 as i have 3+be. Disclaimer is top ✌ thanks for the video
you're welcome! Wait and see how the Hero4 prices will change or develop!
just one question. is the gp 5 compatible with gp4 mounts and accessories?
depends. It is compatible with all the mounts. But not all the accessories. (it has a new battery, new USB port etc.)
Schaaf ok so the mounts are fine that's good news. planning to get this, or maybe the 4 black(if the price drops) which I don't see happening.
cool ride, cool camera, cool video. need more? i Mean no. you are amazing
thank you so much Mattia!
sag einmal - geht dein drehzahlmesser richtig? der fallt ja fast nicht ab. hmmm?
der zeigt meinen Puls an
First my mind was, this is ISLE OF MAN, lol nice bro !
Lol
Will I be able to ride like this after I buy the hero5 for my helmet?
yes if you add 50K kms of CB500 experience!
Where have you mounted the gopro though🤔
Chin mount?
Yes
Hey Mate, Nice video first of all..
I am also about to buy a Hero 5. For motorcycling purpose. This is going to be my first GoPro. Can you please update me the required mounts to meet the motorcycling purpose? Will there be mounts included in the box to meet helmet -chin setup?
there probably won't be the required mounts included for chin mounting when you buy the Hero5. You need all of these:
czcams.com/video/tRQ4OobrCMw/video.html
Hallo Schaaf,
Great description. I currently use the gopro 3 and the battery pack is actually bigger. I belive it's 1100mha. I'd have to double check that. I do wish the transitions from light to dark were faster and the video was not so grainy at speed. I really can complain because I but my cameras used. I got my 3 for 100u.s.d. and a 64 gb card.
sweet deal indeed!
i still have a hero 2. This actually looked pretty damn nice to me and is making me thinking about making a purchase. Thanks for the insight
thanks for the comment!
Nice video and quality riding dude.
i paired mine with the new smart remote and have it mounted on the handlebars so no need for any messing about with the touch screen once you have it mounted on the chin.
I'll stick with the Hero4 probably
Schaaf if I use the 4 on my motorcycle, would I have to use video stabilization software on my computer?
Dude keep going like this and soon you will be part of "motorcycle crash compilation" ;)
if only you'd understand anything about riding motorcycles....
I ride for already 9 years , use brain on the street dude ,if you want kill your sell go a head , but keep the other people far from this shit. In Italy if you want prove something you go on the track , only idiots push the bike to max speed where the limit is 50 km/h
that's why I don't push my bike in speed restricted areas either. I'm not putting anybody at risk except for myself. Like I said. You don't understand a thing about riding motorcycles.
Schaaf Np mate keep going like this . I will put "like" on your crash video . P.S. please don't call that trash " bike" .
YO YOU DRIVE LIKE A MAD MAN>>>>I DIG IT LOL SUBBED
thanks man, appreciated!
It's sped-up slightly
if you say so!
Hey I took raw photos with my GoPro, how do I transfer them to my phone. Every time I transfer the pictures. It just transfers the Jpeg version
your phone probably can't handle the .gpr files
I have the iPhone 7 plus, I can take raw pictures and edit raw pictures with my phone
lol. RAW doesn't mean RAW. Every camera manufacturer has it's own RAW format. Google should help you
Warum rauscht da nix bei dir ? Bei meiner GoPro hört man ab 60 keine Motorgeräusche mehr
weils extern aufgenommen wurde mit einem audiorecorder
Hey man, i am a rider too and i wonder if the voice command works well with your helmet on.
Thanks
Nice vid!
haven't tried yet. But you'll need the Remo inside your helmet for it to work.
Crazy driverrrrr
thanks
Damn!!!! Nice ridding!
thanks
Do you think the improvement (in terms of quality video recording) between this video and your newest ones is the use of nd filters?
Tanks!!
Nope, it's me using 4K
@@Schaaf thanks!!
are you using camera gimbal in this video?
nope :)
Very nice riding enjoying
Thanks
This man corners so good
thanks Carlos
What was the gopro mounted on?
Helmet's chin
I didn´t even know a new GoPro was coming out, pretty lackluster compared to hero2 and 3 launches. I can´t really see any image quality difference, the lack of improved battery life sucks. Is the stabilization optical or digital?
digital obviously. Never been a fan of that myself. I'll maybe make use of it once it's an optical one ;)
Schaaf
Well, with the pricing, they could certainly make it into an optical one. I guess they are just nice enough to give the competition time to catch up :D .
Even today the Gopro 5 looks usable ...
Great video *Crap Game* 🎉
So good !! Riding liké a boss ! ✌️✌️ SSgrrrr
Thanks ✌️
