Frankel, Cracksman, Roaring Lion | The History of QIPCO British Champions Day

2020 marks the tenth running of QIPCO British Champions Day, and to celebrate the occasion, we've looked back at ten of the greatest performances on the big Ascot day since 2011. From Cirrus Des Aigles in the inaugural Champion Stakes, to Roaring Lion's tenacious QEII victory to the ultimate racing performance of Frankel's 2012 Champion Stakes, QIPCO British Champions Day has served up some classics down the years.

The first Champion Stakes that was run at Ascot in 2011 from top to bottom is still one of the deepest fields the race has drawn since being moved there from Newmarket. Of the 12 horses that went to post for the race that day at Ascot, 8 of the 12 were already G1 winners, and 7 of those 8 were either already or would go on to become multiple G1 winners, I.E., Cirrus des Aigles, So You Think, Snow Fairy, Midday, Nathaniel, Wigmore Hall, & Twice Over. Only Casamento would be retired as a 1-time G1 winner of the Racing Post Trophy as a 2YO. The other 4 horses that made up the 2011 Champion Stakes field were Sri Putra who was both a winner at G2 & G3 level, Ransom Note also a G2 & G3 winner, and Green Destiny & Dubai Prince, who were both 2-time G3 winners.

While it’s a great concept and there have been some great races I much preferred the Champion Stks at Newmarket and the QE II in late September.
