  • A fantastic horse race - it's Roaring Lion v Saxon Warrior once again, and it's the grey who triumphs once again in the feature QIPCO Irish Champion Stakes on Longines Irish Champions Weekend at Leopardstown as Roaring Lion shows a stunning turn of foot to land more Group 1 honours under jockey Oisin Murphy for trainer John Gosden and owners Qatar Racing.

    Roaring Lion is the most improved horse of 2018. He hasn't put a foot wrong since his third place in the Derby and is the best son of Frankel to be seen on a racecourse. A wonderful racehorse who will be sorely missed now that his retirement from racing has been announced after his win in the QEII.

      The race she won yesterday was worth more money! I agree she needs to race against Europes best to be considered the best but why dont the Europeans go there to take her on? Why should the Australians always have to travel? Cracksman, Enable, Saxon Warrior etc would give her a real test in the Cox Place.

    • @elgransenor1472
      @elgransenor1472 Před 5 lety +2

      Conan McLynn
      Fair point.
      I guess my attitude is that Cadel Evans didn't demand all the world's cyclists go to Australia to race him, he entered the Tour de France.
      I think the issue is with Australia's quarantine rules. Those horses would be out of action at home for a long period at a very important time of the year if they travelled to Australia.
      Also, the cox plate is run on a very non European style track.

    • @conanmclynn6615
      @conanmclynn6615 Před 5 lety +1

    @keithf_ Před 5 lety

    Saxon Warrior wins the English guineas well. Touted to be the next Nijinsky. He isn't ... very few are.
    He doesn't win again. (Why oh why do Ballydoyle never race him again over 8f ? Oh wait a minute. They run him in the Irish Champion over 10f. And the tactics are ... turn the race into an 8f race. And he STILL gets beaten because Roaring Lion is just too good a horse. RL had really no right to win the Eclipse or the Irish Champion, from the mid-race positions he found himself in. And he wins both. He is a true top-notch 10f horse and John Gosden is a genius. Saxon Warrior is just another Churchill. A two year old star who maintained his ability to win a guineas, but then quickly became overshadowed by superior horses from elsewhere.
    PS For many years I've disliked the tactics Ballydoyle employs in big races. I think back to the day at York (Juddmonte) when Ballydoyle ganged up on Sea The Stars. But hey, he sorted them all out single-handedly.
