  • Imagine a loan agreement in soccer, but a million times more complicated, more confusing, and more complex. That's what happened with Jab Murray and the Green Bay Packers in 1923, when the Racine Legion technically owned his rights, but not really, leading to mass confusion about how the end of the season was going to play out.

The 1920s-1940s NFL was awesome! Love these stories

Please continue with the older videos. Use what resources you can get, as you have always done. The stories are the important thing to highlight, not the visuals.
I enjoy these historical looks and for fans that are not familiar with the history of the league, it’s a good look back at how the NFL got to where it is today. Keeping alive the memories of players long passed is worthy in and of itself.

I never thought the town I went to High School in would be in one of your videos. Marinette is named after a Native American Princess from area. My High School gym teacher was Joel Hanner, son of Packers DL Dave “Hog” Hanner, something I didn’t know until he stopped me in Middle School walking hallway for wearing a Bears T-Shirt. And yes his oldest daughter was in same graduating class as me, so he moved from middle school to high school with my class. I can only assume the reasons for that.

Nice job, jg9! That’s the craziest story I’ve ever heard of a player in the NFL during the 1920s! Murray was an interesting player in the narrative you told about! 😮😮😮😮😮😮😮

This is excellent content. Keep it up. Anything pre-AFL (including the AAFC and maybe some of the other lesser known competitors if there are good stories there too) is appreciated, no matter the visual content.

I love these oldies, JG! Perhaps you could check out the story ofJohnny Blood McNally, all-decade player 1930s but wild. NFL films provided some chuckles on him way back when

Keep in mind that cars in the 1920s were slower than they are in the modern era. So, yeah, that's a crazy commute in a Model T or some other similar vehicle.

    1. I've watched this video twice. Still confused about how they structured this contract
    2. More old timey 1920's era NFL videos please
    3. As for the loan process; once in the AFL the Broncos did a lend-lease deal sending Jacky Lee to the Oilers for two years.
(tried to comment earlier, but it never showed up)

Another thing to keep in mind when talking about the travel time, the weather up there can get pretty bad. Maybe not too terrible around November but a big storm could hit. Also, I have commutated around that part of the country multiple times. I lived in Marquette and would routinely drive to or through Wisconsin. Even today, the road network is not great outside the interstate.

Even the champagne itself was illegal then. Also, ask the crew of the Edmund Fitzgerald how suddenly nasty the weather can get up there in November...

Fun Fact: The 1923 Legion-Cardinals game is the only game in NFL history where a team only scored 4 points in a game.

That would be like the Bengals trading for, say, Kareem Hunt with the Browns having the right to take him back after Veterans Day. This is some nutty stuff!

I think the Legion was too soft hearted. It's no surprise that the Legion folded after the 1924 season. Another Racine team (The Tornadoes) played 4 games in 1926 before folding.

I’m very concerned about these videos now since we haven’t seen helmets in the case for Akron, Rochester, and now Racine.

    • @Phateagle262
      @Phateagle262 Před 6 měsíci

And you wouldn't because I figure 1920s leather helmets wouldn't have aged well, and in any case the Legion/Tornadoes didn't paint theirs, so any unpainted reproduction leather helmet would have sufficed.
Interestingly enough, the Legion's home stadium, Horlick Field, still stands today, hosting high school and semipro football, as well as baseball and softball via the interior basically being split in two, so instead of a football field with infield dirt, there are separate fields split by a bleacher wall. A League of Their Own couldn't use Horlick Field when they were filming because the interior had changed so drastically from the late 40s to the late 80s.
On another note, at least you didn't butcher the pronounciation of Racine...lived here basically my whole life and pronounce it ray-cine, though ruh-cine is acceptable.
