- How to replace the LCD screen in an old synthesizer (Yamaha EX5). A LOT of you nice people asked me about the blue/white LCD screen . So here's how to install that LCD screen inside the Yamaha EX5. Hope it's useful for you. And be CAREFUL when attempting this. :-) Table of contents not needed, you'll have to bear this video in it's entirety or leave it. ;-)

Some bands / artists I've been following for a long time are (among others) Massive Attack, Pink Floyd, Pet Shop Boys, Archive, A-Ha, Yes, Porcupine Tree, John Mellencamp, Jean-Michel Jarre, Metallica, Peter Gabriel and Perturbator. So my music will kind of sound like those (without ever reaching the greatness of those artists, of course). :-) - Hudba
Perfect timing for this video!
I have a new LCD sitting around for months and have been nervous about installing it. This gives me the confidence to give it a go. Thanks so much!
Thanks for watching! You're welcome. :-)
Nice - I did a similar job on my SY77, but I also changed all the tact switches out while I was in there as well.
You've really got me eyeing an EX5, thanks for all the great videos!
Thanks for watching! :)
Hey floyd i got recommended one of your videos after watching some musictrackjp videos on the ex5 and i went down the rabbithole afterwards! Actually went out and got a good deal on a very mint ex5 today! Cant wait to learn more about this beast of a synth!
Thanks for watching and congratulations! You're in on years of discoring new stuff in one box. :-)
IT's an AMAZING synth isn't it?? I have one too.
@@scottcupp8129 my only gripe is when you have to move into a new apartment, its the WORST synth to have because of its weight!
wow great job :D
Thank you!
Hi floyd thank you for doing this!!!
You're welcome! It was some kind of workout during this "don't leave the house" phase we're all going through atm. :-)
@@mr_floydst yeah im debating on opening up the ex for a battery change as well. The main word was "carefully" i believe 😃
For the battery exchange, you just need to remove the "big rectangle" metal cover.
Thanx! Yeah there is another video on here showing the process. Should work out if i am chilled out and carefull. I dont want to break the socket
Nice!!
Thanks :)
Excellent. Lucky I have not needed to do that yet. My ex5 is feeling a little neglected while I’ve been restoring a triton, dw6000 and cleaning up a motif. I have done a display on a rack unit. I have switched out the floppy to a usb drive on the ex5. What is the outboard you mentioned? Is that the additional audio channels?
Thanks for watching! Yes. It's the "EXIDO" board, the one with two additional stereo outputs. Quite nice for adding external effects in performance mode.
I guess the process is almost the same for an EX5R thanks for sharing
It should be quite similar, I guess.
Hi Floyd, I’m trying to install this myself but have a couple of questions. First, did yours come with instructions? Second, the long cable coming from the screen with the blue gizmo attached to the end ... where does it go or what does it do ? :). Thanks!
Hi! No, there were no instructions. But the vendor kindly guided me through the process. The gizmo is for adjusting the screen's brightness. You can lead it outside the casing, or you can adjust it to your liking before closing the EX5. Don't turn the screen too bright, though - the contrast button of the EX5 works on top of that.
@@mr_floydst thank you! I already closed it up but the brightness seems ok. However, as soon as I powered it up I got an internal battery warning, so here I go with the bazillion screws again!
@@justingrimley3916 Oh no...
@@mr_floydstso I replaced the battery and thought while I have it open I may as well try to make the screen brighter! Not sure what I did but now when I power on I get garbage on the LCD! Think I’ll take a break and come back to this later :). For anyone else installing the screen, I found that you can easily snap off the top 2 tabs and the screen fits perfectly.
Anyway, just want to say that I really enjoy your channel and music Floyd!
is it possible to put a much larger LCD screen on? Mounting it to face you?
While I wouldn't say it's impossible, it's unlikely. You'd need an LCD with a compatible controller and then you'd have to solve the problem of attaching it to your synth.
1:41 Yup, that's an EX5. Heavy as f-ck. I'd not dream about taking it on stage. Don't know what the engineers were thinking!
They where something like "ok, let's build a tank that can easily break open doors, but let's also cover it in an egg shell that breaks at the tiniest impact". :-)
Mr Steinberg I have question about my new ex7. My recently purchased unit is like brand new however the right side panel is broken at the same exact point like your ex5. I have repaired it with epoxy and it is ok now. I will paint the cracked point with blue plastidip spray paint. The second problem some black keys in the lowest and the top octave region has a lower touch response. If you hit strongly they are ok but they have no sound with soft pressure. Their initial touch response are normal. I have opened the keybed and cleaned the silicon part. (This is not fs keybed). On the touch circuit some screws were not thightening to the metal part. I have changed them with thicker screws and the circuit board contact to the keybed firmly. However the problem continues. Two or three black keys gives sound applying higher pressure with normal touch response. Do you have any comment??
Hi, thanks for watching! Did you use contact cleaner on the unresposive keys? Often, it's not only dust, but patina that has built up over the years.
@@mr_floydst hello it is ok now. I have used contact spray and didn't work. The problem was on offset between key (three black keys ) and silicon part that touches the circuit board. I have used some kind of duct tape and mounted on the silicon. thus the offset reduced. The ex5 was powered up and ı have calibrated the keys by playing them during assembling the circuit board with screws. The keybed is now perfect. Thanks.
I wish you had a yamaha motif es7 to show
Ha! I wish that, too. I once saw one on ebay for 350 euro, but when I contacted the vendor, it was already sold. I'd really like to get my hands on one (and some of the expansion boards). Best regards!
@@mr_floydst I would sell you mine but i’m all the way in the caribbean. Shipping might be a bit tough
Wow
Thanks for watching!
carefully ;)
absolutely! :)
I need to repair the display of my Boss DR660.
Thanks for watching and good luck with that!
@@mr_floydst obrigado.
THank you for the video~ But... oh man.. this is making me nervous to unscrew everything to get to the buttons... Lot of my buttons do not respond, unless I press it really hard or press on it at a specific angle. I was planning to open it up to clean/fix the contacts but it seems like I literally have to unscrew and unpin EVERY BOARD!!! ....
Hi! It's a lot of work, but if you take a photograph of all the cable connections, it should be doable. Also, before replacing the buttons, try this: www.amazon.com/VisibleDust-Sensor-Cleaning-Blower-Digital/dp/B01N4SKSYS - in my case, dust had settled in, and after blowing it away everything worked fine again.
@@mr_floydst Thanks sir. Yea, I wasn't planning to replace the buttons but clean the contacts. Guessing you had to do the dissembling work XD. I'm pretty good with di/reassembling but just thought of unscrewing that many was tiring haha. Thank you again!
That seemed to go quite well. I'm currently trying to replace the display in my Hammond XK-3. Hammond no longer carries the part but I did see a replacement available on e bay. My Hammond doesn't use any ribbon connectors. The connectors are all single strand wires. The connectors appear to be soldered to the PCB so I have to unsolder it. I'd like to be able to determine if the problem really is the display or the display drivers before ordering the part. Would you have any experience in doing this? I have the service manual but there's no troubleshooting chart in it.
Well, if you have some experience with a soldering iron, soldering wires is the easiest thing you can do, depending on their size.
I have no experience with a Hammond XK-3 - but in my experience, it's rather unlikely the CPU (which controls the LCD) takes damage rather than the LCD itself.
@@mr_floydst Oddly enough, after I disassembled my XK-3 and unbolted the display from the PCB I powered on the organ and wiggled the connector at the main board and to my surprise the display lit up. The connector at the main board is removable wheras the connector at the display is not. I left the organ on for a while and the display stayed lit. I shut off the organ and partially reassembled the organ. When I turned the organ on again the display was blank but you could see a faint line of black squares on it. I turned the organ off and on again quickly and the display came back so the problem isn't the display. I was never sure that the display was the problem because usually when they go you're either missing parts of the characters or the characters become faded. Now that I've narrowed down the problem I'm going to bring it to someone I know to trace what the problem actually is. Hopefully this might help someone else having a similar issue.
