my career path: every salary I've earned in my 20's

  • Hello! Welcome to another sit-down video where I go through every job and wage/salary I’ve had in my 20's so far. In making this, I wanted to contribute to the conversation around salary transparency and hopefully inspire others to get more comfortable talking about financial topics. The book I mentioned, Financial Feminist by Tori Dunlap, was a huge catalyst in my interest in financial literacy, and I encourage you to check it out!

    Talking about money can feel vulnerable- and I definitely feel a bit vulnerable in sharing this! But it’s also important to remember that the amount of money you have/make in no way correlates to your value as a person.
    Thank you so much for joining me, and I hope you enjoyed the video!

    7:57 “our company doesn’t do merit-based raises”
    What a scam. Why would anyone work hard for such a company?

      Agreed! I used to put in so much effort...now I give the bare minimum at work and put my energy towards things that I actually care about.

    I started at 12 an hour in 2014 in high school. Currently I’m at 28.90 an hour. 62k net a year working half the year at factory 12 hour shifts. I don’t even know what I want to do anymore. I just want to retire but I’m only 26 years old.

      I totally feel you. It's really frustrating to have to center life around work. A big part of why I was inspired to start doing youtube videos was because I wanted to feel inspired creatively again after realizing that no matter how hard I worked at my job it was only going to do so much for me, and I was going to have to find fulfillment, purpose, and joy elsewhere. It's a journey, and not an easy one, but I'm wishing you the best :)

    This was really interesting to watch as a college student starting to enter the work world, thank you for sharing! I quite agree that salaries and job progression are not discussed enough even though these conversations are very beneficial for those with less financial education.

      What did you study in college, only if you don't mind sharing? And how much have you found it impacted your career path?

      Hey Julia! Thanks for watching, I’m really glad you found it interesting :) In college I majored in English language and literature. I originally chose this because I was considering going to law school (then I changed my mind) and I think it was still beneficial in the sense that it helped me refine a lot of the skills that I use for my job today (research and writing being the biggest). I think the most important thing is learning how to market the skills you build in college to future employers! Let me know if you have more questions I’m always happy to answer!

    Great to watch this as someone a couple of decades into my career - we never had such transparency or information when I was starting out. Everything was just opaque and money was not to be discussed. Thanks for creating, I have no idea why the algorithm put this in front of me but was amazing to watch!

    At 3% raise per year, you got to work 30+ years to double your salary, then again your job have a salary cap or the company will just get rid of you these days. Tech jobs are the worst, at 35-40’s years old, your career is at its end, companies will laid you off and no one wants to hire you because you’re “old” and too expensive to be hire.

    Id be interested in your boyfriend’s salary and total household income. Expenses and take home pay/limitations to your current financial situation. 50k seems very low for New York.

    • @sabrayne
      @sabrayne  Před 27 dny +2

      Yea, I should have made it more clear in the video but I no longer live in New York! Even with 3 roommates, living in New York was very expensive at this salary, which (among other things) was a reason we moved back to Michigan after a year. Hoping to move back one day when I get a higher-paying job, though :)

    Why dopeople like remote jobs ? It's not that good for networking at early careers.

    • @sabrayne
      @sabrayne  Před 26 dny +2

      It's not for everyone but I honestly love it! It's given me the flexibility to move around without being tied to one location and travel while working. The networking looks different, but I've also made amazing lifelong friends at my job and have continued to network in different spaces, both online and in person.

      Haha, yeah, I don't live there anymore! It was definitely a challenge living there at that salary, and a lot of my income went towards rent. I was also living with 3 roommates (one of them was my boyfriend) and that was absolutely the only way I was able to make it work for the time that I was there. I apologize for not making this part clear in the video!
