President Jacob Zuma delivers SONA 2016

  • Parliament will be the focus of attention this evening, as President Jacob Zuma delivers his seventh State of the Nation Address, before a joint sitting of the National Assembly and the National Council of Provinces. Most political parties have indicated that they want the state of the economy to be the focus of President Zuma's speech.
    Another trademark of this year's SONA is the very strict security measures being put in place at Parliament.

Them not giving the president a chance to speak then engage him this Tuesday and Wedensday on the debate does not make sense!

    What is the parliament all about ? Is it not about us the public? It seems like all the parties in parliament are selfish and they dont care about us, the public... all they are concerned about who is respecting or disrespecting who. Please let a nation's address be a nation address, let it be about South Africa and not about individual parties. We as the public still have a voice to change what is happening in the parliament to ensure the nation's success. Let's stop laughing and start doing something, please...RIGHT FREEDOM OF SPEECH////???///RESPONSIBILITY???

    People should understand that EFF aren't causing chaos or being childish. Politics is a dirty game and to play it you need to play it rough. If they keep quiet and do as the speaker says then the ANC will prevail thus causing many problems to the citizens. Their noise and what so called disruptions are essential beneficial to the politic ground thus causing the ANC to understand that they do what they what and how they want it.

    As a dispassionate observer, I sadly note the blatant disrespect of the office of the presidency and lack of decorum for the authority of the speaker by members of Economic Freedom Fighters (EFF). Despite the speaker bending over backwards to accommodate them, they seemed bent on negating and subverting the rules of the house to in essence scuttle the State of the Nation address. Their beef with President Zuma may be a legitimate issue but it has its place, and as advised by the speaker, that place was not at this proceeding.
    Julius Malema and the EFF has done some good in holding the executive accountable in the South African adversarial parliamentary system, and the political system at large. Even more commendable is their effort to ultimately hold the government accountable towards land reform to redress the century of injustice in land ownership as their northern neighbor Zimbabwe has tried to do.
    In the eyes of the opposition, President Zuma may have lost all legitimacy but no matter how aggrieved, they cannot impose their will on the majority of South Africans that re-elected him. I am sure the South African constitution has mechanisms for removing a president. If their agitation has risen to that level, they should in an orderly fashion, explore those avenues of redress without constituting themselves into an unruly mass, or a bunch of thugs.
    The honorable speaker was firm, but she was also fair and seemed evenhanded. By systematically interrupting and disrupting the proceedings for an entire hour, the protesting EFF members also seemed to discountenance the rights of their parliamentary colleagues to listen to the speech or participate in the ceremony. This unfortunate spectacle and show of shame may end up losing the EFF the support of many who may otherwise be sympathetic to their cause.

      Yet the word Apartheid was used as per usual in order to mask their current corrupt incompetence. SONA is an annual event where presidents should reflect on the previous year and give plans in order to pave a way forward. It has and should have nothing to do with Apartheid. That boat sailed decades ago.

    • @veedge1
      @veedge1 Před 8 lety +1

      +Roberto Betta What happened 22 years ago didn't just happen in a year. Apartheid was not just the 46 years that the NP government brought upon this country but the previous centuries of colonialist and imperialist stealing and enslaving people of colour for their own wealth and fortunes. You cannot disregard Apartheid as being decades ago when the effects of those decades and centuries are still felt in a strong way now. It has ONLY BEEN 22 years. It will at the very least take a 100 years for proper long term effects to be felt. I could be wrong about that. We all realise that Zuma is not the answer but neither is he the root cause of this countries problems. So before you so presumptuously dismiss Apartheid, just think a little.

    Jacob Zuma Changed Pretoria to Tshwane but even he says Pretoria. What a waste of money...

    • @Ngwembe
      @Ngwembe Před 8 lety

      You are not familiar with the topic. Tshwane is a municipality and Pretoria is the capital city and that has not changed but the ANC tried to have the municipality and city being called Tshwane and failed the first time and are still going through the legalities of it.

    They are yelling at each ... they keep interrupting one another....THIS IS EMBARRASSING! There is a lack of respect and it is just ...just sad...
    Now I believe that Zuma is definitely not fit to be in any positions of authority, nor do I think that the ANC should even exist, and the EFF brought up matters of significant importance , but they behaved like animals! ! !
    500 billion goes missing with that man in charge .. I wouldn't even be able to look at him and you people sit with him and listen to what he has to say??
    Don't you guys have families to feed?
    Good luck South Africans - you guys dug your own grave by voting for these people...

    So half the address was EFF giving me a headache. The manner in which they behave is unacceptable. If they cannot follow the rules how will they behave if they are heading the country. No rules will be followed.
