The police were investigating a similar incident that happened two weeks earlier in the same room at the same bar and never even put two and two together to think the cases might be related. Guess who was involved in the case they were investigating? One Arterio Morris--who just happened to be in the room standing next to McCullar at the exact time that Shannon is accused of this incident. The alleged victim thought Shannon was standing next to McCullar. It wasn't Shannon. She allegedly ID'd Shannon after looking at team pictures on the internet. She didn't see Morris's picture on the KU team page because he had already been dismissed from the team after multiple sexual assault allegations. Morris also has colored dreads. This was all uncovered by the defense not the Lawrence PD. This case never should have been charges much less brought to trial.
You guys have done a good job covering this in a fair manner.

Also, he'd have to prove that she committed fraud, that she knew he didn't do those things (the groping and fingering) to her. I've been nothing but impressed by every Terrence Shannon Jr. interaction I've ever seen. Always has held himself professionally and kindly whenever I've seen him on T.V. or in person. About 15 months ago he along with Matthew Meyer & Dain Dainja came to the First String basketball tournament (little kid basketball in the North end of Champaign). My then 8 year old and then 6 year old sons played in the league and tournament. It was great to have all three of the Illini players there but TJ stuck around for at least 90 minutes (not complaining the others didn't stay as long, it was awesome they came at all, they could easily have had stuff to do), I left with my family before he left. Literally sat on my son's bench and made these kids feel great. Took pictures with anyone who asked, he came across as surprisingly shy to my wife and me. Obvious he loved being there and making the kids feel good, and he also seemed to enjoy the joy when a kid made a great play. When I heard he was charged with rape I was shocked and so were my kids. I have followed the public information pretty darn closely because I know people can be great most of the time and still behave horribly. I've waited, and I've read police reports and what's been reported to have come out at the trial, and there is nothing in the public record that makes me think he is likely to have done this. I'm not saying the alleged victim is lying, she may well believe he touched her, but if this is what gets somebody convicted of a major crime beyond a reasonable doubt I'd be so sad.

No, you need to be subject to the same penalties that came dangerously close to being imposed upon the victim of your CRIME. This sort of thing cannot be allowed to go unpunished. This sort of thing happens much more often than we are willing to admit, and lower-profile victims frequently wind up committing suicide over it and people just shrug their shoulders and go "oh well". Absolutely nothing about that is acceptable.

The fact that the victim had such an inconsistent story for such a serious charge is staggering too. The text messages were what irritated me. This victim will also fuel men to downplay actual rape charges to women who have been actually raped. I hope she really thinks about what she did and the consequences of it.

I have no idea what the district attorney or w/e was thinking when they moved forward with charges. Those text messages are a BAD look. Let’s stop acting like this hasn’t been an issue! Just last year, 2 black Ohio State players were found innocent after a white female lied about being raped and kidnapped! Both have lost everything! Shawn Oakman was also lied on by a white female and did time just to be found innocent later one! Lost his chance to play in the NFL! So stop acting dumb like this isn’t a thing!

Not only that, but the all-white jury came to the correct conclusion, without regard to race. Reverse the races of jury, accuser, and victim of the accuser, and I bet you a dollar the verdict is polar opposite, evidence be damned.

I've tried and defended a lot of sexual assault cases. Let me help you out, you don't need DNA or witnesses for a rape to happen. In fact, you rarely have either. Most rapes don't have witnesses. Often DNA evidence isn't something that ends up being a major part of a trial. If people are expecting those things to be common they are mistaken. Generally these cases involve the accused and the alleged victim and no one else. That's why these cases are hard to prosecute. I have no idea if he did or didn't do it. That's going to boil down to how credible a jury finds her on the stand. Yes, digital penetration is rape. Rape isn't just penis in Vagina or Anus or mouth, anything penetrating is rape by law. But if it helps, consider it sexual assault.

Yeah, how dare he go to a bar with some friends. He should just sit at home every single day and stare at the wall so as "not to put himself in a bad position".
