There's not a lot in the live sound realm that gets good laughs, but this video was full of moments that had me giggling. Especially "Well, you definitely know it's there!" Ya think?!? I was also amused at your facial expressions on the first run. Every time you looked away from it for a second, it started wandering off like a wayward toddler.
As a drummer myself ive always been curious about a buttkicker thing on a drum thrown to follow the bass line better but this is is one ass-tearing scary looking unit 😹
Current limiter - "we don't need that..." I love this. The surfboards and bike hanging in the background just add to the ambience. It's like the beginning of 'Back to the Future' with the Chiquita guitar and insane sound system, Dymo tape and ridiculous drivers. You're the punk rock 'Doc Brown' of audio experiments.
Not sure about the haptic fidelity this M Force offers but we are using Clark Synthesis Gold transducers to great effect providing haptic floors and seating for Deaf music accessibility. They can do 15-2,000 hz tactile frequency range. We also have vests from Music:Not Impossible that have multichannel vibrating points across the waist, spine and shoulders.

My partner asked me to order one for her, never touched a drum kit in her life ☔️.... That’s one crazy contraption, maaaate you’re off the fucken chain. So many great one liners in this vid as well 🤣
It's the Deconstipator! Fantastic stuff, Dave! I have a couple of Buttkickers and the guys don't even use them. Maybe if I upped the wattage with one of these suckers.
i'm impressed by literally everything in this video, but not the least of which was the very serious set of sweeps coming out of that tone generator. i assume that's a preset series of sweeps designed to test very serious subs like this.
I would recommend making a compliant mechanism which increases the torque and reduces the excursion, based upon a lever. Not sure that would do very well long term with a drummer sitting on it. I think you have made a thing called a "sybian" here.
@@DaveRat I would have thought that low pass resonance would be ideal - perhaps even something on a gas strut. While I have every faith in the M force, I have not found a drum seat that doesn't break - it's not so much the dead weight as the wiggle which does the damage. No cast zinc parts is a step in the right direction for sure, but regular passive drum stools take a pasting. ______ Speaking of resonance and distortion... have you thought of fitting an M Force to the top of a marquee tent pole?... use the whole tent as a diaphragm... High distortion levels expected.
I've been experimenting with large surfaces, rigidity vs resonance vs structural strength are challenges. Rigid need a resonance above usable freqs or below. Below is too heavy. Non rigid tends to flap and flex to where the desired LF is not generated. Rigid hex panels with strong fiberglass or carbon fiber skins seem best so far, though foam core may work. The stresses are significant and just like it wears down steel drum seats, other material degrade
@@DaveRat if you tension the fabric of the membrane in a cone rather than a plane, then the plane of distortion ends up parallel to the surface. At very high tensions, a "big top" or "tipi cone" shape could be lower distortion. I wonder what happens if you mount a kick drum just hanging off the m force... with the skin bolted to the shaft. What I would suggest for a rigid diaphragm is balsa wood end grain + cross grain laminate, skinned with carbon fibre + vectran pre preg, and make the radiator rectangular rather than circular, much like the square sony diaphragms, with a truss structure spreading thr load & controlling the eigenmode distribution. Do the whole thing in one shot, vacuum bagged, or cooked in a kiln in a box of sand.
@@DaveRat have you tried using a disc as your lever to reduce eccentric masses and linear imbalance? a square plate would be a simpler option and have good primary balance but the secondary harmonic imbalance would likely still be dramatic
I made a prototype of one of these last year, just some small bass shakers in some silicone and an amp and hi pass filter. I wanted to be able to monitor bass from the throne or feel a gun shot in a computer chair. It probably wasnt powerful enough with just 2 small ones but the concept did work
Immediately what comes to mind is a shaker conveyer... Casting plants need conveyors to move red hot freshly cast engine blocks. Obviously typical conveyor belts would melt... so they use shaker conveyors, whereby an entire 20' trough section is vibrated an inch or so at approx a 45° angle ... thus the hot castings move on down the assembly line cooling while they do so. Plus, residual casting sand is shaken off. fwiw; you trying to hang on was a fantastic visual!
And I thought my 1000w version I built in the 90’s kicked butt….being a Scotsman I really should order the t-shirt, the original lifeboat is not far from my hometown
I've had good success with the butt kicker with a little tecnique I came up with. I create a channel with a sine wave generator and a very fast gate keyed off a trigger or the kick drum mic. It yeilds a much better impact than sending the kick drum signal itself into it. On a related note.... There is an installation of King Kong at the Empire State building. If you touch it, you can feel its pulse. My friend works for the robotics company who built it. They were having trouble getting the pulse to feel right and powerful. My friend called me in because he knew I had experience with these tactile transducers. His supervisor told him 'don't call me down unless you can make the workbench bounce.' I brought in a Behringer iNuke 6000 amp that I had and hooked it up to 3 buttkickers attached to the bench. Same deal, 40hz sine wave and tapping a heartbeat rhythm. Within 20 second all the tools on the bench had fallen to the floor. That is the technique they used for the installation with a little higher quality amp.
You are a mad man, evil genius!!!!! This thing is bad ass!!!! The butt kicker, porter & Davis drum thrones are awesome especially for drummers like myself who use Electronic drum kits/spd-sx….ect to give drummers extra thump on with very high stage volume

But also, If ever a guy wanted to raise some money say for a charity or to help a neighbour out or whatever, I could almost guarantee all you'd need to do is live stream yourself sat on the seat, and charge people $5 a track to DJ a song that gets played through the seat. and all you have to do is just sit there. This is like the K&M (who also make drum thrones) of DW drum thrones.
You don't need to worry about whether your legs will work for a few weeks aft.
And butt goes numb, and hard on the back. Can't see
first time in live I want to have children,,,,,to educate them with you’re videos. 😁🔈🔈🔈🔈
Huge compliment and thank you
