  • Highlights of the highly talented and skilled former European Welterweight champion.
Kirkland Laing - Was a Jamaican-born, British welterweight boxer nicknamed The Gifted One. Laing fought 56 times in a twenty-year career, the highlight of which was a shock split decision win over Roberto Durán in September 1982. The fight was selected as Ring Magazine's upset of the year. He was a two-time winner of the British welterweight title and won the EBU welterweight title in 1990, with a second round knockout of Antoine Fernandez at the Wembley Conference Centre. R.I.P.

Unfortunately Kirkland Laing passed away yesterday. He was a supremely talented boxer who had the potential to become a great world champion but he suffered from the high life and being under-prepared in crucial bouts. At his absolute best he could cause many great fighters an upset, his career best performance came against Roberto Duran which was named upset of the year in 1982. My sincere condolences go out to his family and friends at this time.

@@royayersrules @jazzraspberry yes Micheal Watson was at the gym too :). We were always encouraged to go and talk to him. Really nice guys. I was a youngster coming straight off the streets they changed my attitude to life. I saw them spar a guy who had come straight out of prison and they made him quit in the middle of the 2nd round. They were telling him to carry on that way he will get stronger the guy just stepped through the ropes out the ring. He couldn't handle any more. I was astonished! The way they boxed was fantastic. Pure skills.I realised the real tough guys are the quiet humble ones who don't need a weapon or gang behind them and can stand alone in the ring.

Firstly, big up yourself for making this video. I watch different boxing channels (some know a bit about what they are talking about) and NONE of them reported this. One particular one that I watch, asked a question of Black British sporting heroes, who achieved something amazing but were over looked. I emailed that guy and told him about Kirkland Laing. No reply, no response and to be honest, I am not even sure he knew who he was. I lived around the corner from Kirkland (Cecilia Road, Hackney) and we would see him all the time. He was older than me and my mates but my friends older Brothers all knew him. I went on to become a Middleweight, then Super Middleweight (trained out of Colvestone and Bannister House) but never forgot the fact that a local Man, went overseas and beat 'The Great' Roberto Duran, when Duran was still very dangerous. The disappointing thing for me was not the fact that he was naturally gifted but never reached his full potential because of his 'issues' and demons (we all have those), it is that when he was down, he was just tossed aside and forgotten. AND NO, this is not a Black thing (just in case you ask), this is a British Boxing thing. RIP Kirkland, the World Champion who never was.

Most notably this is true for asian fighters in lighter weight classes and fighters from the old soviet states. Since this is youtube and many people on here are dicks i just want to assert that i didn't intend to come off as a know it all in any way and i'm sorry in advance if i sound lecturing or something to that nature. Duran was at his prime at lightweight, his body looked far more flabby against Laing than it did when he beat Buchannan, who fought at lightweight using the same style Laing used at the higher weights.

Laing always said he never felt comfortable and properly balanced with his hands up. The hands-down style suited him. His mums pre-natal accident robbed him of 5 years leg developments that he never fully recovered. With his naturally strong upper body this probably made him top-heavy than normal. The hands-down style he favoured most likely countered the top-heavy feeling that he hated when he held his hands up in high guard. The bio mechanics of it all makes sense. At the end of the day, no coach can teach you intuition, and as much as he was flawed and often undisciplined, the hands-down style was totally Laings prerogative, even though it occasionally cost him dearly. RIP - the gifted one.

very few boxers could survive with Roberto Duran at Welterweight let alone beat him. Laing did it impressively on points in 1982 which was only two years after Duran's clashes with Ray Leonard. So this was by no means a washed up Duran. 1982 Upset of the Year - Ring Magazine.
