Throw away the confusion-causing bar and chain and safety-pin thing that comes with these traps and buy (also at Harbor Freight, usually for 99 cents) a 1 inch spring clamp to secure the rear door.
Once the animal is trapped, use a tie-wrap on each bottom corner of the spring door to secure it to the trap body. A panicked feral cat can force their way through those corners and escape, usually while you are on the way to the vet or clinic.
I've learned the hard way with both of the above issues. Please give these points some attention if you're using an HF trap.
I bought one of these in the summer of 2014 and I never had a cat escape from it until 8 days ago. Thursday night, I trapped a male cat (Brandy) that I have been trying to get neutered for over 2 years. Next morning (Friday), as I was about to load him into my car to take him to the vet, he forced the door open and got away. He still shows up to my driveway, but I am afraid he will never again walk inside the traps (now I have 3). From now on, I will use zip ties to secure the door. I use a lock to secure the rear door on the 1-door traps I have. Did your cats escape at your home or at the vet's parking lot?
I learned this the hard way also. A car escaped while I was driving and scared the ish out of me.
Use the bar that comes with the spring and I set it from side to side near the top of the release door. It will hold that door very good.
And yes, secure those bottom corners of the pring door.
Could you please tell me how to use the cage support brace to frame the cage walls and hook it to the cage using the attached clips?
How do you set the trap? Those spring powered sliding latches keep sliding off, I feel like it would go off if they just breath on it.
I've had to bend the part that catches on the door part just a little. I'd do a video but don't have any cages anymore.
This is a good video for explaining that. Looks like exactly the same style of trap. czcams.com/video/HbK6EnIFEtI/video.html
thumbs up dude
Thanks so much
Could you show me how to open the door? I am reading the instructions on my trap (same model) and I can't figure it out.
Just made a video for you on how to open it.
@@MrJustDIY Link??
Could you please post above the link to the video you made for setting up the trap?
czcams.com/video/o-ZLj7daB3c/video.html This the only other one I have.
@@MrJustDIY That's the same one as above....
Somehow this skunk is not tripping the trap. I push fairly easy and it trips. What is the problem?
Some animals step over that part I had to add a piece on top of the plate that trips it. An old license plate works well.
@@MrJustDIY i also zip tied some chicken skin to the trap at the top as far as possible to the rear to make the skunk work for it and trip the trap. He didnt show up last night though. Keep you informed
I caught the critter in my attic twice. First time, it managed to open the rear door. So I wired that shut. Last night it got caught again, and ripped the front door off it's hinges and tossed it aside. Seems like not very good construction.
That's not good at all.
Must be a racoon. They are extremely dextrous!
Did you end up getting the raccoons?
Yes I did
That was your tube... Thanks for wasting my time.
