Elvis WAS a pioneer. He combined Country, Rhythm & Blues & Gospel in a way no one had EVER done before. You are recognizing only his R & B and Gospel elements, but not hearing the huge country influence in his music. (Probably because you don’t recognize the old country from the time Elvis was growing up.) You are are overlooking that aspect. He once said: “I’d hate to say I am strictly a Country Music singer, because I had other influences”. During his life, most people heard that part first and foremost, because they knew those songs.
Please react to Elvis doing the old 1949 Hank Williams song from this same Hawaii concert. It’s called “I’m so Lonesome, I could cry”.

You have a pretty good point when you link this rock blues performance with the black church congregations.
Elvis always kept those gospel roots real close to him and his music (and singing) was also so distinctive because of it.

If you listen to people like Cliff Richard, Bob Dylan, John Lennon etc all BIG Elvis fans, they fell in love with his music when they heard him on radio, but got crazy about him when the saw him. Remember many people still only heard the music in the beginning. Here in Denmark we couldent even buy his music before 1959/60 (at this time Elvis already had 10 number 1 hits in USA). If you want to understand what Elvis did that was so different (and better) than those around him, read "Last train to Memphis" about his beginning and influence. Also Elvis had a one of kind great voice. In the very good article "The 50 voices of Elvis " you have voice experts, other famous singers and music critics analyze what made Elvis different. One thing was he could sing perfect in so many styles. Compared to Chuck Berry (Elvis could go from "Jailhouse rock"to "It's now or never", from "My baby left me" to "snowbird") Berry wrote songs, Elvis reinvented them. Elvis was called king because he had the entire package, looks, style swag, voice, stage presence AND because he had more number 1 hits than anyone else , Still does today and sold a lot more records than anyone else too.

Interesting comment from someone regarding Sinatra when Elvis was on his TV show in 1960 -- they sang "Witchcraft" & the comment was Sinatra was pitch perfect (he was), he was louder than Elvis (he was), & he was flat (ABSOLUTELY); & there lies one of the many reasons for what made Elvis so extraordinary -- the EMOTION that came from his soul & his gut -- something Sinatra didn't have. But then, that's how it was back then -- good voices but performing almost like they had a shot of sedation.

Elvis WAS a pioneer - there is no arguing that. But its VERY DIFFICULT to get to the HOW part. How does one PIN ELVIS to a genre? Here is where so many people get it wrong. Its the MUSIC EDUCATION & UNDERSTANDING of where the genres began, and what the genres were and weren't
#1: The Rock and Roll genre IS NOT BLACK MUSIC. It wasn't CREATED by ANY RACE. It was created BY YOUNG PEOPLE FOR YOUNG PEOPLE of ALL RACES. Period.
I'll go deeper. Elvis MERGED elements of white, Spanish and black music genres together and created a new style and sound that YOUNG PEOPLE OF EVERY COLOR AND CREED LIKED and YEARNED FOR. Not just white kids... black young people too. Spanish young people too. Young people period. There was a youth revolution going on at the time.
Elvis is the ONLY musician enshrined in Halls of Fame of EACH INGREDIENT OF ROCK AND ROLL: 1. Country Music Hall of Fame, 2. Rockabilly Hall of Fame, 3. Gospel Hall of Fame, 4. Honky Tonk Hall of Fame, 5. Rhythm & Blues Music Hall of Fame, 6. Christian Music Hall of Fame, the 7. POP MUSIC Hall of fame --- and of course the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame.
Rock and Roll was merged together with all these music genres: Country music, Rockabilly and Honky Tonk are created by WHITE people.
The first commercial recording of what is widely considered to be the first country song featuring vocals and lyrics was Fiddlin' John Carson with "Little Log Cabin in the Lane" for Okeh Records on June 14, 1923. He was white.
Gospel music began by white people before the birth of Christ (Jesus would have appreciated music that brought praise to his Father. He and his disciples often sang Psalms). Inm Elvis' era, he frequented segregated black and white churches. The first published use of the term "gospel music" appeared in 1874. The original gospel songs were written and composed by authors such as George F. Root, Philip Bliss, Charles H. Gabriel, William Howard Doane, and Fanny Crosby. All of them were white.
BLACK musicians invented the blues. William Christopher Handy was black. In 1912 he published “Memphis Blues,” now considered the first blues song.
Rock music is composed of multiple genres of music. Black and white and Spanish cultures and genres ... and others too, are important ingredients of Rock and Roll and American music as a whole. The instruments and songwriters came from ALL OVER THE WORLD.
R&R was YOUNG PEOPLE MUSIC created BY YOUNG PEOPLE of all races and marketed to YOUNG PEOPLE looking for a new sound and to revolt against the older generation.
Elvis was performing Gospel in the 1940s before Little Richard or Chuck Berry ever cut a record and gospel was at the core of Rock and Roll as much as R&B or Country/Rockabilly. So Elvis was a forefather and pioneer of Rock and Roll and he was instrumental in getting black music, the Blues, Gospel music, Jazz and Rockabilly music heard on a grand stage during a period of segregation and racism.
Elvis was synergy, he was fusion, he was totally non-racist. In fact he was the opposite of racist. He provided a platform for this music and wanted ALL of America to get a taste of it like he did. He created a whole new style of dance and clothing and hair and the way he performed on a stage was even more unique. NO ONE LOOKED or SOUNDED anything like Elvis Presley. He created his own style.
He invented VIBE... He did not invent THE INGREDIENTS OF ROCK, He WAS AN ARRANGER. HE ARRANGED the ingredients into an entire new revolution of music sound and stage presentation. He brought MONEY and PRIDE into the business and killed off racist elements. He ENSURED black songwriters got paid, and WERE TREATED WITH DIGNITY.
That should mean a lot. Because he did it when he didnt have to. It was LESS PROFITABLE FOR HIM. He didn't NEED to standup. And it was VERY DANGEROUS to stand up in that era. Ask Malcolm X, Ask MLK, Ask JFK and Robert Kennedy. Elvis MADE A HUGE STATEMENT, without EVER GETTING POLITICAL.
