Seems in his final season he's getting the component scores he's deserves. His skating skills are second to none. I do wonder if he would have been more successful if he had even tried another technical coach even for a summer. I wonder if a few months with Raf, for example, would have done for his skating.

Chock and Bates's Free Dance was a revelation to me: mesmerizing, creative, unique. After the competition dance menu of same old, same old, nothing fresh or inventive, no voice or viewpoint....whoosh, enter WIND and FIRE. The flame flickers, re-shapes, flicks on and off, fingers of fire flying from Chock's fingers, intimate sparks....At the whim of air, the flames leap, grow, twirl, and die. Extraordinary. I am now a big fan; best free dance I've ever seen.

Hearing you say that there is trauma involved in having ADHD touches me. I have ADHD and I used to skate. It certainly didn't help my jump technique or my exactness in footwork. The freedom of emotional expression that skating gave was important to me because I faced so much rejection for being different. Now skating doesn't give skaters that freedom. It's sad.

I think Maddie Schizas feels a lot of pressure from Skate Canada to get the second spot back, she's really been the women to hold Canadian women together for the last year starting with the Team Event at the Olympics, she's seems very burnt out this season. The Free has not clicked all season but she seems to be cracking under the pressure from Skate Canada. I don't understand the technicalities of ice dance but I had a look at Chock/Bates' free again since you guys have been saying it's gotten better. The concept (which the commentator says is fire and *wind*....not fire and ice), with their costumes and their body choreography all together makes sense to me now. I've not looked at any Instagram explanations or anything, and I get it, and I like it now. I think it makes sense if it's wind, not ice, since it's a totally different kind of relationship!

Maddie mentioned in an interview recently that she trains kind of in a group setting, mostly individually, and the coaches just give attention if you need/want it. It didn't sound like there are private 1-1 lessons as such, which I found really interesting. She said she likes that approach, but after the season she's had, maybe a change would be good. Here’s the real tea on Simone being the GOAT:
It’s like if Michelle Kwan came back and did a quintuple axel and very easily in the short program.
That’s how ahead of her technical programs she was from the entire women’s field during the last quad.
It wasn’t just her vaults and floor exercise routines. Her beam and bars was so difficult and executed brilliantly, that all of us gymnastic queens were watching with our jaws dropped.
And she did all of her routines so easily.

I gave up on 4 Continents after the women’s short. Colorado Springs is an Olympic training hub, tickets reasonably priced at $21-$46, and maybe 743 fans in an 8,000 seat arena. My tin hat conspiracy is that NBC removes skating from Peacock ASAP due to embarrassment about lack of fans. Hard core fans will watch in real time. But new, casual fans who watch a replay a month later and see an international event with no fans ain’t coming back and may skip Olympic FS coverage when they really need ratings to sell advertisements.
Did like seeing Joanna So’s (HK) packaging. She stands out from the other 23 competitors with her rebel POV - neck tattoo, shoulder and arm tats...while skating to Chicago. Love the contrast. Need more of that. More variety in packaging and programs is always appreciated.

Joanna: “Option three - go F yourselves.”

I read that Isabeau withdrew from feeling ill that day for the free skate. But then I was like dang just imagine what Starr could’ve done had she had the opportunity to go as 1st alternate. No offense I like Isabeau but I don’t think she needed 4cc. But also all 3 usa ladies were feeling ill. Amber twitter about it, Bradie talked about it as well. But it wasn’t Covid.
Also can we talk about how Bradie did a clean short and got a 68 or 69. Compared to nationals where I thought the judges cheated on her scores by boosting her score. So when I saw she did a clean skate at 4cc I knew this was more of an accurate Sp score for Bradie. While finally they gave Amber the accurate score for her sp. cuz I thought she was always underscored and inflated at nationals. Also was shocked to see Amber mess up her 3+3 in the free skate. I fear that Chock and Bates are the chosen champions though I really like GP's programs better especially free. I jus think CB came back this year kind of expecting a coronation. I will say this whoever wins the ID gold should retire. They should take the gold and run CB may want to stay on to win OGM in 2026 but they are looking a bit tired and if PC come back which I can see because they have no competition especially without Russia. Piper and Paul may want to stay on until 2024 in Montreal I suppose. But if any of these teams or Italy somehow wins they should thank their lucky stars. CB have lost their freshness; the judges seem to like them I just don't see how they et such high scores compared to the Danadians. I agree tech better but pc wise I am in the minority I would have The Danadians ahead. I agree LALA are a treat but we won't see them at worlds. 19:40 - 20:29 Yes! It is so frustrating how, even though mental health is discussed more now, it seems like these news media outlets don't really seem to understand that processing and healing from whatever someone is going through takes TIME. They are ready to interview or write about someone struggling with their mental health while the athlete is probably in the thick of it to get that inspirational story without much substance. Perspective is everything. Idk if my comment is making sense I just feel like skaters deserve the support and resources for their mental health and I do not think that's the current reality for them. I think that needs to change but given what we know about the sport and how things are run, I'm sadly not super optimistic.

I think a level of nuance missing here is that COVID has possibly changed global baseline pulmonary/cardiac health among athletes. Research shows it's a vascular illness capable of causing systemic endothelial damage, regardless of the severity of infection. Whether this will improve over time or the extent of that change is not yet clear. That impact may not be seen equally either; for example, Jin Boyang has had COVID twice but may not have had access to Paxlovid or updated mRNA vaccines because he is from China. His system may be struggling more than others to compensate now.
Are altitude comps as safe as pre-COVID? Nobody knows. Our leaders are not educating the public about this reality. Colorado competitions have always had the altitude reputation, but personally, I think it speaks for itself that so many athletes either collapsed or left the ice with blue lips. First, there seems to be a trend-intended or not-among media to report on many details of an an event only to end without addressing the most obvious question(s). This is compounded on CZcams where the content of a video’s lede is nothing more than click-bait. This and That ALWAYS delivers on both and more, so thank you!
Second-I was watching women’s free skate at the Four Continents (when I could catch it, and now I know why it disappears) with a friend. We both wondered about Isabeau. We’d seen her in the hall, heard her name called, etc., and then . . . no Isabeau. It helped to know that no explanation has been given as to what happened. I hope she is okay. She is such a lovely skater-as original, graceful, and skilled as one could wish for these days.
Which brings me to my 3rd & last point: I finally reached the point of dismay & a bit of boredom with performances due to the fact that I found myself naturally expecting when & what jumps, spins, choreography will occur. I got tired of excessive arm-waving 8 years ago. Most aggravating to me, tho, are those gorgeous, heart-soaring glides that cut out just as your mouth begins to open. It’s like really bad 4-play! I think a woman at the Canadian Nationals did a long one, and I nearly burst into tears.
So, again, thank you for addressing all this! I feel affirmed, confirmed, and supported!
Now I will watch the rest of your video.
Take good care of your very good selves-you are appreciated!!!!

It was nice to hear you talk in this conversation about coaching: that is, what is the best way to get a skater, or any athlete to reach their best, to develop to the highiest level possible . I have quite a long time been wondering, if the good results, the high level achieved in figure skating, ballet, or whatever is *despite* the so called "russian coaching method", or "russian school of coaching" (I'm not referring to any particular school; for instance in ballet this expression is/was used in Finland) OR thaks to it. I was once watching high level ballet students, when they had one season a russian ballet teacher. The teacher was *not* humiliating anyone, not shouting to any one. Instead, by her own expertise, experiece and authority she was able to make the students understand that you don't get results without hard work. "How many jumps you do per day? 50? Not enough! 100? Not enough!! 200? Not enough!!!" But there was no abusive talk ever, no humiliating, nothing like that. Well, my point here is probably this: maybe many have misunderstood what "the russian school of coaching" (that used to be the term, when I was training dance, just in amateur level). In my opinion a coach or a theacher can be very demanding without making the athlete feel like the world is ending, if they make a mistake. Well, of course my own experience is from amateur level. But I still think, that when skaters or dancers feel joy of what they are doing, it gives much more to the sport, to the athlete-artist him-/her-/whateverself, and to the audience. I am not sure, if this is too idealistic for competitive sport. I'm interested in what do other people think of these ideas...?

  • @jorgebonilla2234

My soapbox thing is I think (outside of dance, where it may be needed), the jumping disciplines should get rid of level 4. It just encourages overwrought elements and not letting the program breathe. We need to go back to shorter but more effective step sequences and spins that allow each position to breathe for a good number of revolutions without being forced (much less this new thing of having to do some difficult exit).
This competition also just kind of made me miss the old component system. For me, I always thought of performance and interpretation as different; performance kind of relates to whether you executed the program to its maximum and were invested, whereas interpretation is about artistic nuance and timing and expression. That said, I guess the change doesn’t matter because the judges just have the scores correlate across components anyway.
Finally, I think the Canadians were just leagues ahead of C/B here. I hate that we have to pretend that they aren’t (just like we had to pretend Hawayek/Baker are only 10th best or whatever it is they got at the Olympics).

The perfect example of the body being in a hypertense zone is Anna S. She always had reports of being horrible in practice, but killing it in the competition and winning. Then she says things like she thought of the competition as her reward, so she loved doing it bc it was her reward for all the practices. Well, if your coaches are traumatizing you in practice and your body and mind is shutting down and you’re getting reported on as just falling and laying down every single jump, even the doubles… but then you go out on competition ice and just slay… maybe the practice environment caused her to be in a hypertensive state that didn’t allow the body to fully function and her being out on competitive ice were the coaches can’t get to her and there are cameras, so she knew she wasn’t going to get screamed at and degraded, allowed her to skate freely and that is why she was always able to TURN IT ON in competitions.
There are so many clear signs of abuse and instead of the media calling it out, they instead do sound bits like “she always shows up when it matters most” or “she is just mentally tougher than the rest”, what child needs to be that disassociated… I’ll tell you what child, an extremely abused child that is smart enough to find ways to protect themselves.

Sigh. Did Hubbell's mom make that dated fuchsia costume for Green? Could we please have something something current and chic? That suits the body of the wearer? Montreal teams (except Chock) are outfitted like matrons this year: heavy fabrics, overly long skirts, corset cuts...the bodies look long, the legs short and heavy....why oh why? It's so last-century, and the costuming speaks for lack of innovation in the choreography and themes. Such a surprise that Montreal has gone in this direction when they've stood for "cutting edge."

Maybe you're not paying enough attention to the Summertime program. It's not in your face but it's saying a lot.

Perfect way to describe it. Their faces and movements are expressive, if they did anymore it would be too much for the music.
