One of the real heroes is Ahmed’s big brother who’s the one who started the vow of not killing any of his brothers, thus greatly influenced Ahmed’s stance later (he did feel pressured to do it once but finally decided against it since that day)
Too bad, his children wouldn’t follow his footstep later

Mustafa promised the same to Mehmet. But unfortunately, Mustafa was executed by Suleiman. Mustafa is the most deserving among Suleiman's sons, them Mehmet, them Beyazid. Selim was the weakest of them.

But his grandsons followed this rule indeed his children didn't follow that but the after generations starting from Mohamed the fourth till the end of sultanate have paused this bad habit but instead they kept the princes in what so called golden cage in order to not to allow any chances for any prince to claim his right for the throne

Ahmed's decision to begin his reign with kindness blessed his reign with relative stability. He also controlled the harem of Sultanas that they couldnt overwhelm his authority.
His sons failed to follow his footsteps and their reigns were treacherous, sad and tragic.
*note of course this is based on the TV series, which is not exactly accurate to history*

Ahmed died young, his oldest son was barely 13 years old at that time. One epidemic and entire dynasty could be wiped out. The last time Ottomans came so close to extinction was when Selim I died and only Suleiman and Uveys were left, and Uvey also wasn't executed, instead being allowed to govern a (far away) province. At its core, letting Mustafa live wasn't really a precedent, it was just shocking because two previous sultans committed well-remembered massacres of their brothers and same was expected from Ahmed.

Sultan Ahmed would have been executed Halime sultan and safiye sultan after there first slightest attempt
So there would have been no need to execute Shehzade Mustafa
Infact the law would be killing of Mother of Princes
    instead of killing princes
Because prince could not ascend the throne without support of a strong sultana

Thats what it means. And as shadows always follow the movements of its Origin, it also means the caliph is a servant who must follow Allah's Decrees and Commandments.
