Old friend of mine, Brett Racine was a top amateur between RC and Stewart and was friends with them. He told me the morning after RC's first perfect season, everyone woke up hung over and couldn't find Ricky. Took an hour or two but someone finally decided to check the motel weight room and there he was; Up at 6am on a stationary bike. Dude never deviated from his grind. There's no way to beat that combination of talent and work ethic.
@@ronk6553 why would he make it up lmao. Ricky is the goat, no questions asked. Motocross was his entire existence and still is. I live in Sweden and over here Cross country skiing is a popular sport while its very small in the world a lot smaller than MX! Cross country skiers are known as very fit athletes and it’s a lot about vo2 Max and that stuff. A while ago a swedish sport chanel interviewed Sport Scientist Stephan Neusser who been working with all kinds of athletes in all sports soccer skiing both alpine and Cross country tds cyclist and so on! They asked who are the most fit and allround athletes you know? Motocross riders with no doubt he said! I never seen athletes like motocross riders! Also alpine skiiers use motocross as their main training because it’s train your whole body as Marcel hirscher olympic Gold medalist and 60 times alpine world cup winner said. Absolutely love the diversity of the athletes your interviewing ! Been riding for nearly 50 years now and love how other athletes appreciate the skill and determination of the top guy's. Love the show !
It's great to see people understanding how demanding the sport is. In the '90's people not apart of the sport looked at it as a dangerous sport, but not a physically demanding one cuz the bike has an engine. It's good good see the insane amount of fitness that's required to be successful riding MX
@@BigTruck-IE-Fool yuuup. It's IMO the biggest test of endurance and strength there is. You have to have a crazy level of both in order to even qualify.

I agree, I used to do both and am hopefully soon going to get back into both. I started training mma about 3 months after my big crash where I broke my collarbone, pulverized many bones in and destroyed my left foot, and broke a rib which then stabbed and punctured my lung and it ended up collapsing. Also was very close to rupturing my spleen. I would say the physical shape needed for each sport is about the same (keep in mind this is at the low tier amateur level) which each one having a little different demands for physicality. When I was in fighting shape (capable of 3-3 minute rounds at full fighting intensity) I was in shape for motos and vice versa. Still got insane arm pump but I made it through the races fine. But I was racing local tracks at the beginner and novice level so it was 6-8 laps not 15-30 +1(or 2). I need to get back to that level and even higher since I’ve become so far out of shape over the years. I remember I could hang inside the mosh pit for whole songs and not get gassed, and that was inside gnarly pits like for Slayer, Lamb Of God, Exodus, etc.
@@slayerfan209 damn dude that's rough! Glad you made it through all that. I feel your pain though. At one point I could do 30min motos fairly easily. They sucked, but I never got arm pump and I recovered pretty quickly. I gave up the sport nearly 10 years ago and I'd give a massive amount of money to have that kind of endurance again. I still go to the gym, but we all know thats nothing compared to full sprint motos. There's a Gracie JJ gym and a 10th Planet JJ gym in my city that I've been considering for awhile. Gonna have to give that a try soon.

Jeff Ward did this explosive jump test that they used in basketball and he was ridiculously strong. Talent respects talent. Skill respects skill. This guy gets it. As a mx rider I have high respect for alot of sports including surfers. Sports that I've never even tried and I can see the talent and risk and dedication it takes to do it.
Even if you are a rough football player, a great track star, MMA fighter you still need to have the balls to do a triple jump and have the agility of a juggler with the controls while you're balancing the bike at 40+ miles an hour in traffic that you don't know if you're about to get cut off, for 30 minutes plus 2 🧐 not many other sports do you leave the ground at all, much less at the speeds and heights motocross does 💪
Right, when a rider locks bars off the start they hit hard but you stay up and ride it out or your hitting that double first lap forced off track in the air to ride it out and keep pushing. High speed and changing conditions, the brain and body must be firing on all cylinders.
What's so funny I remember growing up reading a book about how one of tiger woods trainers took him to train with James Stewart as they understood the huge demand of the sport but came down to bubba being way more relaxed at the time, eating snickers right before his race wasn't up their alley haha
I bike, swim, or row a few times a week and on Saturday I can still only make 10-15min before I am completely exhausted. I could only imagine how much it would take to ride practice, qualifying, heats, and 2 30min motos at a pro pace.
