- While the “U.P.” doesn’t have the puddle duck hunting of The Great Plains, in the shadow of the Mackinac Bridge can be found some of the best diver hunting the Great Lakes have to offer. In this episode of Duck Lore, Sean is joined by MeatEater’s Founder Steven Rinella and local Michigander Dylan Graves. Neither Steve or Sean have hunted layout boats before, and they learn quickly that there’s more to it than meets the eye.

I like how this guy is introducing Steve Rinella on MeatEater's channel lol
Steve I only started watching your shows about 6 months ago. I’m 62 and love hunting whitetail deer and hogs in Georgia. I have watched a lot of other hunting shows you are the most down to earth person you explain everything how to gut, skin cut up the meat and pack it out!!! Your cooking episodes are off the chart!!!! Stay safe hunt free Brother!!!
Steve Rinella, the man, the myth, the legend, the netflix guy, that fishing guy....this man has built a legacy
I dont know why steve is so entertaining. He has a style that is larger than life, yet is understated. Like he isnt trying hard. Just hard to nail down
Excellent!! I have hunted some of those exact same spots in the past. It is always a crap-shoot on the water, but you guys were at ground zero of some of the Upper Great Lakes best diver staging areas. I have seen them so thick alongside the Bridge that they defied being counted. The last fall I was there it was mid December and I saw, literally, tens of thousands of birds on that "cove" off the N.E. corner of the Bridge. Most of them Redheads, but a bunch of Canvasbacks and Scaup, (both types) as well the other usual suspects. I really enjoyed this ride-along guys, thank you.
And I thought my romp in the swamps was work! Mad respect for those of you that hunt seaducks this way
That 2 for 1shot was something else. Great work dude.
The Mighty Mac in all of its glory. Great video.
Nothing better than seeing the sky turn black with birds on the first morning of a multiple day hunting trip. Thanks for showing us Michigan bird hunters some love
Good episode. This is a bucket list for me.
my favorite waterfowl hunts are layout bufflehead beatdowns on lake st. clair. the place is packed full of em!
I absolutely LOVE layout boats. My favorite type of hunt
Ok now let’s see Steve make a decent meal outta them divers cause I’m yet to figure that one out
The two birds with one stone was absolutely filthy 🔥
I love how Steve was going on about all the military history of the Straits. Same thing goes through my mind whenever I head up that way.
I've done a lot of diver layout hunting on Lake Erie, I love self filming it and it's such a fun way to hunt ducks. It's definitely humbling, but once you get used to the boat and shooting it's a blast. Great video covering our favorite way to hunt divers!
Certainly a challenging way to hunt
GREAT tutorial episode!! During the past several decades, we always saw large rafts just east of the Mackinaw bridge. Never many west of the bridge.
It's true..You can't compare it to any other hunting. Diver Hunting is an animal all it's own..Been Diver Hunting on Erie since I could walk..
Ugh I was hoping for Steve’s cooking on this one! Damn
